Pet Network Humane Society’s 15th Annual
Radar and Guinness
Our MissionPet Network Humane Society rescues adoptable
animals from euthanasia, connects abandoned
animals with loving families, instills respect for
animals through hum ane education, and promotes
quality of life through animal companionship.
Welcome to Fur ball 2013!“Take a Chance on Me”
Dear Friends of Pet Network,
Thank you for joining us for the 15th Annual Fur Ball,
“Take a Chance on Me.”
Tonight, we need your help! The Fur Ball raises almost
a third of Pet Network Humane Society’s income for the
entire year. With the funds raised tonight we will continue to save companion animals facing almost
certain euthanasia at overcrowded and underfunded public animal control facilities.
Pet Network not only provides these dogs and cats a safe haven until they find their forever homes, but
also extensive medical care, spay/neuter surgeries, microchips and vaccinations for each and every
animal in our care.
With your continued support, our organization has saved the lives of almost 10,000 pets, and enriched the
lives of the thousands of families that offered homes to these abandoned creatures in their times of need.
Pet Network Humane Society depends on your generous financial contributions. We rely entirely on
tax-deductible contributions, foundation grants and special fundraising events like the Fur Ball. We
receive no government funding. Our life-saving work is only possible because people like you care
about animals in need.
Please enjoy the food, music and merriment this evening, knowing that every purchase you make, and
every donation you pledge will directly save the lives of the animals in our care, and the thousands of
animals we will save in the future.
Sincerely,
Christine Beckstead Chew Becky Goodman

2013 Lifetime Pet Partner Award
Dave and Cheryl Duffield, Founders
Each year we honor someone whose been important to our organization over a long period of time. This year we are delighted to recognize Dave and
Cheryl Duffield, founders of Maddie’s Fund. Dave, an astonishingly successful entrepreneur, has used his wealth to endow this family foundation with the admirable goal of becoming a no-kill nation by 2015.
Maddie’s Fund is named after the family’s beloved Miniature Schnauzer. Through grant giving programs, academic education and the establishment of model shelter programs, Maddie’s Fund has dramatically
reduced the euthanasia of healthy and treatable dogs and cats. Maddie’s Fund has been there for Pet Network at times of critical need, providing our much appreciated Pet Network van, on-going professional guidance and numerous financial grants. The Duffields are also our neighbors and friends. Several of their children donated the proceeds from their lemonade stand to Pet Network. We can’t thank you enough!
Rich Avanzino, President
Rich Avanzino, President of Maddie’s Fund is accepting the 2013 Pet Partner Award. Rich is widely viewed as the father of the no-kill movement. He led San Francisco in 1994 to become the first City and County in the nation to offer an adoption guarantee for every healthy shelter cat and dog. His demonstrated leadership prompted the Duffields to hire him in 1999 as Maddie’s Fund’s first president to pursue the goal of creating a no-kill nation.
Not only does Maddie’s Fund support the rescue of animals… they also help reward the children who visit the Pet Network Humane Society for humane education!
Maddie’s Tail Wag activity books are always a huge hit after our classes.
Thank you Maddie’s!

Tonight’s EntertainmentMichel BellFor many people, receiving a Tony Award nomination would be the ultimate highlight of their career. But for tonight’s Fur Ball entertainer, a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of “Joe” in Hal Prince’s production of Show Boat was just one of many amazing successes.
At the “America’s Millennium” celebration in 2000, Michel performed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in front of more than 600,000 people including the President and First Lady.
This recipient of the Jefferson Award (Chicago), Ovation Award (Los Angeles) and the Outer Critic’s Circle Award (Broadway) and most recently the Kevin Kline Award (St. Louis) is especially known for his emotional portrayal of “Porgy” in Gershwin’s musical version of Porgy and Bess, which he performed in the United States, Berlin, Cairo, Tokyo, Pompeii, Paris and Eritrea.
Michel has performed with the San Diego Opera, Michigan Opera, Opera Pacific and Lyric Opera of Kansas City as well as the L.A. Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, Fresno Philharmonic, Berlin Radio Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic under the Direction of Marvin Hamlisch.
Michel was also formerly a member of the Fifth Dimension vocal group and has performed with entertainment greats including Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Julie Andrews, Perry Como, Sammy Davis Jr. and Bill Cosby.Michel is accompanied by his amazingly talented wife, Catherine Matejka who has performed internationally as a piano soloist, accompanist, chamber musician and conductor. She was the Music Director and Conductor for the first national tour of the Harold Prince production of Show Boat, as well as Associate Conductor of the Broadway, Los Angeles, Toronto and Chicago companies. Catherine has also been Music Director and Conductor for two different productions of Show Boat at the St. Louis Muny Theatre.Ms. Matejka graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Baldwin Wallace College Conservatory and received her Master of Music degree with Honors in Piano Performance from New England Conservatory in Boston. She was awarded a Fellowship to Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood as well as receiving an Alumni Achievement Award from Baldwin Wallace.
Catherine has been on the faculties of Clark University, University of Massachusetts, Franklin Pierce College and Los Angeles Harbor College. She made her Carnegie Hall Debut in a concert of New American Music, and has recorded music of Robert Schumann for the sound track of the movie “Spring Symphony”.
We are thankful and excited to welcome Michel, who embraces our mission and love of all things furry. We know he will make Pet Network Humane Society’s 15th Annual Fur Ball a memorable and amazing evening.

Janet Pahl & Warren KocmondLong time Incline residents Janet Pahl and Warren Kocmond are pleased to be one of this years’ Fur Ball 2013 sponsors. Janet and Warren have been involved in numerous community activities in Incline such as Parasol, Incline Village Community Hospital, Sierra Nevada College, and of course a favorite of theirs, The Pet Network. Winston, their Airedale, also helps provide unique socializing skills to animals that are in need of special attention. “I really appreciate and care for animals of all kinds”, remarked Janet, “and a worthy cause like The Pet Network gives us a chance to help make a difference. We’re fortunate to live in such a generous and vibrant community.
Janet has been Coldwell Banker Select Real Estate’s overall top producer for 28 years. Warren is President and CEO of BG Radia Corp., a high-end loudspeaker manufacturer for home theaters and cinema.
Gary Gorgon Surface Systems, Inc.
When Pet Network Humane Society began to research companies to resurface our kennels, one name kept coming up, Surface Systems. Owned by Ed Little, Surface Systems is a specialty contractor for concrete coating and repairs. Their work includes joint sealants, epoxy and urethane floor installation and repairs. With more than 21 years servicing Northern Nevada and California we felt confident they could handle our unique job. When Gary Gorgon showed up at our shelter we knew we had chosen well. Gary was an advocate for animals in every way. He had rescue dogs of his own and was notorious for bringing home stray animals in need. He was an active volunteer at several rescues in the area and immediately fell in love with Pet Network and the animals in our care.
Gary was born and raised in LA, including graduating from CSU with a degree in Criminal Justice. He served in the Navy, which included deployment to Vietnam during the war. After his military service Gary joined AT&T, where he retired after a 30 year-long career. Not ready to end his working career, Gary joined the Surface Systems team as the Manager of Marketing, where he spent the next 12 years.
Pet Network’s staff was excited about working with someone as passionate about rescue as Gary was, so it came as a bit of a shock when our quote didn’t arrive on time and our calls went unanswered. When we did get a call from Surface Systems it was with devastating news. The reason we hadn’t heard back from Gary is because only hours after his visit he was hospitalized for a heart attack, and a few days later he passed away. We were all heartbroken and speechless.
The small and family-like staff of Surface Systems was determined to honor Gary Gorgon’s memory by making the Pet Network Humane Society a deal they couldn’t refuse. The Surface Systems team not only reduced their own fees, but also contacted High Desert Surface Prep to ask for their help. When owner Greg Johnson heard the story he immediately agreed to assist in the endeavors.
High Desert Surface Prep has been prepping concrete, tile, wood, carpet and asphalt for removal and resurfacing for more than twenty years. With multiple industry certifications and state of the art equipment to reduce dust and disruption – Greg knew he could help Pet Network reduce their downtime and keep the environment safe for the animals at the shelter during construction.
Between the incredible fee reductions provided by Greg and Ed and the funds generously donated by Pet Network’s supporters, our kennel repairs were able to start!
Pet Network Humane Society is both honored and proud to do business with these amazing businesses. Surface Systems and High Desert Surface Prep are simply amazing and wonderful. We owe both Ed and Greg a huge debt of gratitude for choosing to honor the memory of Gary Gorgon by supporting Pet Network Humane Society.
