Purple Power Pack Camp Group K-State Research & Extension Offices of
Dickinson, Geary, Pottawatomie, Riley, & Wabaunsee Counties
Hello Purple Power Pack campers!
This le er is coming to you from Purple Power Pack agents. First off, we miss seeing you all! Summer 4‐H programs and events are the highlight of our extension year. One event that we are especially missing this year is camp. We LOVE summer camp as agents.
So, even though we can’t do camp in person, we s ll wanted you to have a taste of Rock Springs at home! In this booklet, you will find ac vi es to do at home based on experiences you normally get at camp. As well, the State 4‐H office will be pos ng camp videos too!
Although camp may not be happening as normal this year, it doesn’t mean our camp spirit has to go away. Let’s show your family and friends just how great PPP camping is!
Sincerely,
Purple Power Pack Agents.

Lava Lamp – Alka Seltzer
Supplies Clear plas c bo le with cap Vegetable oil Water Food coloring Alka‐Seltzer tablet Funnel Instruc ons 1. Fill the bo le 3/4 full with vegetable oil. 2. Fill the rest of the bo le with water (almost to the top but not overflowing). 3. Add 4‐5 drops of food coloring. 4. Divide the Alka‐Seltzer tablet into 4 pieces. 5. Drop one of the pieces of Alka‐Seltzer into the oil and water mixture. Watch what happens. When the
bubbling stops, add another quarter of Alka‐Seltzer. 6. When you have used all of the Alka‐Seltzer and the bubbling has completely stopped, secure the bo le
cap. The Science Behind It! Oil and water do not mix. If you try to shake up the bo le, the oil breaks up into small li le drops, but the oil does not mix with the water. When you pour the water into the bo le with the oil, the water sinks to the bo om and the oil floats to the top. Oil floats on the surface because water is heavier than oil. Water is more dense than the oil. The Alka‐Seltzer tablet reacts with the water to make carbon dioxide gas. These bubbles a ach themselves to the colored water and cause them to float to the surface. When the bubbles pop, the color sinks back to the bo om of the bo le. Source:h p://sciencemadefunkids.net/
“In darkness I remember that it is not knowledge to which we most deeply belong but mystery, and I sense in the mystery of night a beauty that exceeds even the great and notable beau es of the daylit world.”
—John Daniel
Explore the Night!
Can you see color?
Start with a white scrap paper and an unwrapped crayon. Then, draw a picture of something you enjoy outside. On the other side, write what crayon color you think you have. At the end of the hike they can use a light to see if the color you
wrote matches the color of the drawing!
Many will believe they can see color. Light allows us to see color using cones in our eyes. However, rods give us night
vision but only allow us to see shades of gray
Adjus ng our senses to the dark:
Our eyes can play tricks on us in the dark. As you begin the hike, you may no ce that you rely more on your feet and less on their eyes to feel out the bumps on the trail. Following the trail can be difficult
because our eyes can play tricks on us in the dark.
‐Disappearing Head Trick: Stand across from someone else and stare at their face. You will no ce your partners’ heads begin to disappear! Simply shi your eyes back and forth to make the head reappear (you can subs tute your thumb as a less scary version). in the absence of enough light to see properly, you brain fills in the blank of what you don’t see with what it knows should be there … the woods (or what‐ever environment you’re in). It looks as though the head of their partner had disappeared.
Silent Owl Wings
Materials needed: smooth rope and frazzled rope
Owl feathers are not smooth‐edged like other birds’ feathers. Smooth, sharp edges on feathers help birds take off quickly and catch the air well, but they are noisy! Owls want to sneak up on their prey. Their feather edges are very uneven, allowing them to fly silently. For a
demo, take the rope with even, smooth edges and whip it around in a circle (be sure you step away from your audience and that no one is close enough to be hit with the rope). The rope will make a whirring sound as it whips through the air. Then take the co on rope that is more frazzled (there is a weight ed to the end of this rope since it is lighter and harder to whip around). Do the same demo and this me there will hardly be any sound. The so , unsmooth edges allow for
silent flight!
Learn more about owls by iden fying the calls you hear! Have an adult download the “Merlin Bird ID” app to help iden fy bird species on your
hike!
There are many other popular ac vi es to do on a night hike.
1. Night Owl. Play a recording of a common owl call or imitate it with your voice. An owl may respond to the call.
2. Spider Eyes. Using a flashlight, search for the reflec on of spi‐ders’ eyes by holding the base of the light on your forehead and projec ng the beam into the vegeta on where spiders hide. Try
and catch them in a small Tupperware container!
3. Insect ID. Hang a white sheet outside and shine flashlights on it to a ract night‐flying insects. Try to iden fy them.

Let rise again then bake at 350° F un l internal temp reaches 196° F. You can test this by pu ng an electronic meat thermometer into the rolls and leaving it here while it bakes. Makes 40 rolls.
Ice Cream in a Bag Ingredients: 1 c. half and half 1 ½ tsp. Vanilla Extract 1 Tbsp. Sugar ¼ c. Rock salt Ice 2 Ziploc Bags: 1 small, 1 large Pour half and half into small Ziploc bag. Add vanilla extract and sugar. Seal the bag firmly and get any excess air out. In the larger Ziploc bag, fill I about ½ way with ice. Add salt. Then add your small bag and fill with ex‐tra ice on top. Seal the large bag. Get gloves for shaking and shake for 6 minutes. *Gloves are needed since the salt makes the ice extra cold. Take the small bag out of the large bag and rinse the outside of the small bag with cold water. Make sure to rinse out the top part of the bag also (above the seal). Once done rinsing, carefully open the small bag to not get any remaining salt from the outside of the bag inside the bag. The ice cream will be a li le icy looking to start. Use a spoon to mix it around and so en it up a bit. Scoop out and enjoy!
