Building deadline loomsNURENE JASSIEM-MARCUS
AS THE deadline looms for the submis-sion of applications for utilisation of thefreshly-renovated Shawco building in Re-treat, the City of Cape Town says it hopesthe building will be used to its full poten-tial, sooner rather than later.
“The upgrading (of the building) has beendone and it cost a lot of money. My hope isthat the administrative processes will be fi-nalised soon so the successful applicants canstart using the space in October”, says ward
councillor Jan Burger.People’s Post previously reported the City
had hoped the building, located in Retreat’sMain Road, would be used as a counsellingcentre for recovering drug addicts. (“Move-ment on drug centre”,People’s Post, 6 March).
Community-based and non-governmentalorganisations have since been invited to sub-mit their applications to lease parts of thebuilding, which is owned by the WesternCape Department of Social Development.
Community meetings were also held toclarify the application process.
But, says Don Jethro, chairperson of the
Retreat/Steenberg Civic Association, themeetings were of “little substance” and lessthan a dozen community organisations at-tended the last meeting on Thursday 23 Au-gust.
“The department basically just handed outthe application forms and I think many or-ganisations still don’t understand how theprocess works,” says Jethro.
The building initially served as a retire-ment village, after which Shawco occupied it.
It was then converted to a health faculty forUCT, before becoming vacant about 15 yearsago.
Applicants have until 14:00 on Friday 7 Sep-tember to submit and can contact Chantal Ad-ams on (021) 444 0715 or Fatima Davids on(021) 417 4086 for more information.
The department is expected to host anotherpublic meeting at the end of this month to dis-cuss the outcomes of the application processand to explain how the facility will be man-aged henceforth.
The Cape Junior Ballet Companywill host Danz Expressions, directed by Dianne Cheesman, atthe Bellville Civic Centre on Friday at 19:30. Tickets, at R100,will be available at the door. Formore information 2 jsla[email protected].

Lady and the hunky trampLadyLady andand thethe hunkyhunky tramptrampDear reader,
At my rather mature age,I hadmy first real experienceof “ladies’ night”.I was actually after the
goodie bag an upmarket es-tablishment tantalised within their invitationpromisinga “wonderful party to endWomen’s Month”.My friend was up for the
challenge, but disappoint-ingly, we did not get goodiebags because we had not re-served.Whatwegot – andhadn’t reserved either
– was enough half naked, muscular menserving us delicate snacks. Our wish wastheir command. The mix of women were mainly young,
some older. When my friend asked me whether this
was “for desperate women”, I bounced thequestion off one of the topless lads who re-taliated: “No, it’s for women who wantsomething”.Well, countme out. I wasn’t there for an-
ything other than a new experience and a
few fun hours in a classyplace with a good friend. Inany event, I have somethingat home (my husband, whoknew my whereabouts).Venturing on, we were
treated to no drinks, as thefreebie drinks were alcohol-ic, no snacks as we’d filledup earlier on a tasteless beefwrap at a Turkish cafe, andno entertainment as themu-sic and fashion show werenot to our taste. The fashion show seemed
to drag on and was followedbyamake-up lesson. In fairness,my friendand I were listening to all this from comfycouches far from the action.Weopted tonot see the fashionandmake
up demo by a guy whom we explicitlyheard saying that we should apply founda-tion to our lips as well, “to bring it all to-gether”. Useful tip – in fact so useful itstopped us taking photos of ourselves, er,ourselveswith the hunky eye candy.With-in seconds of posting these pictures on Fa-cebook, I had 12 likes, of which 11 were fe-male.
Two hours later, we were bored and allthe gorgeous guys in the world couldn’tpersuade us otherwise – until I found anovel use for one.Declining his offer of “something from
the bar”, I tasked himwith going in searchof a hot chocolate, telling him it was closetomy bedtime and I needed a hot beveragebefore I left. The cutie delivered. After agreeing to some passive smoking
on the roof deck with my smoker friend,we left for home, only to find that my carhad been locked in at the parking area I’dchosen for safety reasons.
The security guard had gone on hisrounds and we had no choice but to waitfor him; enough time for an opportunisticlittle man to approach us with intent ofsnatching our bags. He did not succeed. What I learnt from my “ladies’ night”
out is that it’s better to always take a manalong.’Til next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by

Study bursaries for deaf studentsA TOTAL of 30 bursaries are being offeredto deaf or hearing impaired students. The bursaries are for candidates wanting
to be trained as laminators to work in theplastics industry – from boat building toswimming pool construction and canopyconstruction.Plastics SA and training partnersWhisper
BoatBuildingAcademy (WBBA) and theMa-rine Industry Association of SA are invitingdeaf students to apply for bursaries fundedby the Manufacturing, Engineering and Re-lated Services Education and Training Au-thority (merSETA). The bursaries will allowthem to train in the art of workingwith com-posites from this month to December.Plastics SA regional training manager Jo
Fitzell says this will be the third intake ofstudents who are deaf or hard of hearing.“There is a tremendous shortage of skilledlabour in theWestern Cape boat building in-dustry and the deaf students who graduatefrom this course offer a welcome relief anda sought-after skill that allows them to workin a variety of fields in the plastics indus-try,” Fitzell says.Peter Jacops founded the WBBA as a non-
profit organisation to teach deaf studentsfrom the townships the art of boat buildingin 2004 . “Research has shown that 40% ofyoung South Africans between the ages of 16and 25 are unemployed and do not go toschool,” says Jacops. “Disabled youngstershave an even bigger problem and face evengreater obstacles as there are not many op-portunities or job facilities that cater for
their specific needs.”Training takes placewith the help of a full-
time sign language interpreter and consistsof classroom-based theoretical training atthe Plastics SA offices in Maitland, com-bined with practical workplace experience, presented as individual skills programmes, offered at the newWBBA facilities in EppingIndustria. The opportunity is open to men and wom-
en students who are 18 or older, deaf or hear-ing impaired, but able to speak sign lan-guage.Successful candidates must have a valid
SA identity document, bewilling to learn, en-joy working with their hands and be willingto commit to full-time studying. For more information, SMS 072 836 3998 or

Cafda postpones annual meetingTHE Cape Flats Development Associa-tion (Cafda) has chosen to postpone itsannual general meeting, after decid-ing that the original date was inappro-priate.
Joye Gibbs, chairperson of the Cafdagoverning board, says the NGO hadplanned to host the meeting on Thursday30 August, but cancelled for several rea-sons.
“The governing board of Cafda wishes
to report that after deciding to hold its An-nual General Meeting on Thursday 30 Au-gust and preparing for it, that the boardfound, to its dismay, a number of itemsboth relating to governance and the con-stitution needed further attention,” saysGibbs.
“On review it was agreed by boardmembers that it would be irresponsible ofthe board to proceed with the meeting asarranged.”
Gibbs adds that the “late notification”
of some board members was one of themain reasons for postponing the meeting.
The Cafda AGM has now been set for thelast week in September, and an exact dateyet to be confirmed.
Gibbs says that the board sought legaladvice before deciding to postpone themeeting.
“The governing board have workedlong and hard over this last year to bringCafda into line with the requirements forgood governance, in order to help make
Cafda more stable and to keep it sustaina-ble for the benefit of the clients and thecommunity,” says Gibbs.
The governing board has apologised toits members, friends and beneficiaries forany inconvenience which may have beencaused.
The board will report back on the re-sults of the meeting near the end of Sep-tember.
For further information, please contactGibbs on 0 082 425 3092.

THREEmonths after a contro-versial painting of presidentJacob Zuma by artist BrettMurray, a new painting hassurfaced. CapeTownartistAy-anda Mabulu’s painting de-picts a well-endowed Zuma, dancing in traditional Zulucostume. People’s Post readersshared their views of the newartwork with interns Tarren-Lee Habelgaarn and LuzukoZini, who also took the photos.
DISRESPECTFUL: Luqmaan Timmbelieves artists should be sensitive.“Respect needs to be shown. Evenif one does not like him, he is still ourpresident and he needs to be respected for that.”
WRONG: Lunelle Davids says thepainting is a clear insult to the president. “The artist is making fun of ourpresident and that is wrong, especially when the artist draws privateparts.”
VIOLATION: Khuthala Ndolondolosays Zuma’s rights are being violated. “He is the father of the nation andshould be respected nomatter what.We are not supposed to see his private parts; only he must see it.”
NOT FUNNY: Clint Williams believesthe artist is wrong. “That is our president and these paintings are morally wrong. Some may think it is funny, but I don’t because it is a sign of disrespect.”
DEPENDS: Tyrel Stober says youropinion depends on how you view thematter. “Some people may think it isfunny and some will think it is disrespectful.”
NOT ACCEPTABLE: Allan Africa says peopleneed to respect our leaders. “Each person isentitled to a certain amount of privacy and respect and those have been violated with thesepaintings.”
HUMILIATING: Vanessa Brink sayspeople should keep their opinions tothemselves. “This is very disturbing, even if the artist doesn’tlike him they should respect Zuma instead ofmaking him and hisfamily feel humiliated.”

Help police bust robbersLUZUKO ZINI
THE hunt is on for four men who robbedR35 000 fromaRetreatRoadbusinessmanon Friday.
Steenberg Police station commander Colo-nel Noel Josephs says the mini-mart robberytook place between 18:00 and 18:30.
“The Chinese shop owner was alone in hisshop when four men entered the shop, one ofthem was armed. They managed to robR35 000 in cash, a cellphone and airtime,” hesays.
The robbers fled in two different vehicles.“According to the shop owner the men used
a white Polo Classic and a white Nissan Hard-body double cab vehicle to flee the scene,”Josephs says.
“The suspects are between the ages of 25
and 35. We are calling on shop owners, espe-cially in Retreat, to be alert and phone the po-lice if they suspect anything. We ask anyonewith information about the robbery to con-tact Captain Gavin Sheldon on 079 8940 133.”
In separate incidents, police arrested 16people and seized drugs in stop-and-searchoperations.
Drugs with an estimated street value ofabout R2 600 were confiscated.
“We managed to arrest 16 people who areaged between 18 and 40 from Thursdayevening until Sunday afternoon,” saysJosephs.
“All of them were arrested in differentparts of the Steenberg area. We managed toconfiscate 19 Mandrax tablets, 10 tik unitsand 212 dagga stoppe. All the suspects ap-peared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court onMonday.”
Street renaming finalisedRESPECTED anti-apartheid stalwartswill be honoured with the renaming ofstreet names in the city.
Following a public participationprocess, which saw 19 000 residentsvoice their opinions, the City of CapeTown has cemented proposed namechanges across the peninsula.
A total of six streets and two civiccentres will be renamed, while an un-named bridge will also be named. Thefinal decision was made at a Councilmeeting last Wednesday.
The City had originally identified 27proposed name changes six years ago.Several processes and meetings led tothe final decision.
The process was marred with sever-al hiccups, most notably the proposalto have Vanguard Drive changed toDullah Omar Drive (“Where thestreets have names”, People’s Post, 24July).
But Athlone residents and the Omarfamily were not in favour of thischange. They called for Jan SmutsDrive to be changed to Dullah OmarDrive.
Both the Smuts and Omar familieshad been consulted, but in the end itwas decided the road will remain JanSmuts Drive. Vanguard Drive will alsoremain.
Councillor Brett Herron, chairper-son of the naming committee, says:“Understandably this process, moreoften than not, elicits a deeply emo-tional response and throughout theprocess we have tried to hold our-selves to a standard of objectivity, ex-tensive and comprehensive publicconsultation, transparency and acutesensitivity.
“This was not always easy as thoseof us who have fronted this work, espe-cially at some of the public hearings, have had to endure some of the crudestresponses which were often rooted indeep-seated prejudice and a lack ofgenerosity of spirit that has no placein our democracy.”
The most significant change is therenaming of portions of LansdowneRoad. The section from Wetton to Turf-hall roads will remain LansdowneRoad, while the section from Turfhallto Palmyra roads will be renamed Im-am Haron Road.
The segment from Wetton to Swartk-lip roads will be known as GovanMbeki Road and the stretch of roadfrom Swartklip Road to Baden PowellDrive will become Jeff MasemolaRoad.
Other name changes are:. Coen Steytler Avenue to Walter
Sisulu Avenue;. NY1 to Steve Biko Drive;. Modderdam Road to Robert
Sobukwe Road;. Harrier Street (Parklands) to Blue
Crane Street;. Hendrik Verwoerd Drive to Uys
Krige Drive;. Wittebome Civic Centre to Wyn-
berg Civic Centre;. Athlone Civic Centre to Dulcie
September Civic Centre;. and the unnamed footbridge be-
tween Langa and Bonteheuwel be-comes Bonte-Langa footbridge.

RETREAT residents arepraising the effortsmade by alocal church to better theirlives.
TheNewHopeChurch inCon-cert Boulevard hands out soupand bread to residents everyWednesdays. The feeding scheme coordina-
tor, Donavan Jacobs, says thechurch is doing this becausethey want to assist those whoare in need.“The church is feeding the
people as away of showing themthat we care. We don’t only feedthem but we advise them ontheir daily struggles,” he says.Resident Igshaan Marcus,
says he is thankful to thechurch. “Every Wednesday Icome here with my two chil-dren. This means a lot to me be-cause I am unemployed and atleast on this day my childrenare guaranteed ameal,” he says.Jacobs also calls on local busi-
nesses for assistance.“At the moment the church
donates somemoney to the feed-
ing scheme. We rely on institu-tions to donate tous.Weare call-ing on businesses to help us be-cause the number of peoplecoming here is growing,” hesays.Church member Gerald An-
drews says it’s their duty to helpout.“We first have a prayer ses-
sion thenwe feed the people.Wedoing this because we want peo-ple to know there is more in lifethan the violence and drugs thatare ruining our community,” hesays.“This feeding scheme started
two years ago andwe feed about150 to 300 people. We are hopingto do this on a daily basis but we
need help.”Jacobs says many positive
thingshave comeout of the feed-ing scheme.“Some of the people who
would come here for the souphave become church members.I am also proud to say that wehavehelped lots of people to findjobs and be able to better their
lives,” he says.Marcus believes the commu-
nity is inspired by the feedingscheme.“Thepeoplewhocomewant to
better their lives so that theydon’t depend on the feedingscheme. The advice we get fromthe church makes us want to bebecome better people,” he says.

New heritageWITHHeritageDayonMonday24September,the decision to rename some Cape Townstreets has been made in good time. The street renaming debate will continue
unabated. This is an emotional issue. There will al-
ways be detractors. Some may breathe a sigh of relief at the re-
naming of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive to UysKrige Drive and the offensively-named Na-tive Yard (NY1), whichwill be renamed SteveBiko Drive. The street renaming should be perceived as
anattempt at redressing part of this country’spainful past – and, hopefully, to leave it bur-ied.But Heritage Day has itself been unofficial-
ly rebranded National Braai Day.This in itself speaks of a lack of sentiment
towards our national heritage. And it may not be such a bad thing.Ask most locals if they know the people
who, until now, have had streets named forthem. Most won’t know who Hendrik Verwoerd
was. Or Coen Steytler.Fast forward to two decades from now and
who will remember Walter Sisulu or RobertSobukwe?Admittedly, many will remember Nelson
Mandela, but as for the rest?Contemporary history will give most of
these political icons a line in the annals of ourhistory books.By comparison, ask any tourist what they
love about Cape Town and they will say it isthe friendly people, the natural beauty of thecity, the different cultures, fine food andwine. These are reasons enough to draw foreign-
ers to our country.A braai on a Monday? Why not? Celebrat-
ing Heritage Day with friends and family isperhaps a suitable heritage. One that is worth building on.
Lets giveJosephs achanceIT IS with dismay to read the possi-bility that Colonel Noel Josephscould be removed from his position(“Josephs stripped of top job?”, Peo-ple’s Post, 28 August). This issue seems to be more of a
personal vendetta against him. I be-lieve if anyone is not performingtheir duties as they are supposed to(others should) help that personand share their experience and ex-pertise.Those critics who added their
voice to remove him (should) re-think.Please remember nobody is per-
fect.Let us help him and strengthen
his position and be respectful ofthat as your faith doesnot teachyouto criticise others.M DAVADOSSRetreat
Put through school application ringerAFTER the recent bad press about schoolbooks, I am prompted to ask: why does onehave to go through a veritablewringer to geta child admitted to high school?I went through the trauma of having to ap-
ply for my son to attend high school nextyear. Thiswas anabsolutenightmare! I havetwo grown daughters and I sent them off fortheir first day at high school, with their ap-plication forms and that was that. What a palaver to get my son into a high
school! He’s my “laatlammetjie” and I havebeen out of the school business for a longtime. I live in the southern suburbs and myblood boiled on numerous occasions.Firstly, there are the application forms
which need to be completed. I swear they aremore like a short epistle. You have to attachyour life history. Then you’re expected to have all the docu-
ments certified and make an appointmentfor an interview. This is just an applicationto attend a particular high school. Then you need to pay a non-refundable
“processing fee” Now, if a school receivedabout 200 applications and they all charge atleast R200 for each application, they wouldcollect R40 000. If they took only 100 pupils, they would net R20 000 profit.I was extremely disillusioned and had giv-
en up hope of finding a school with the rightattitudeandapproach to education. One thatmatched my own expectations and my son’sintelligence. My son is in the top third of his grade and
I felt he would need a school that looked athis high achievements and nurtured them, while encouraging him to work hard on theaspects he may be lacking in. This was mylast attempt at finding the right fit but whata pleasure it was to walk into this school ontheir open day! As the principal made hiswelcome speech, my son whispered to me“Mom, this is the school I want to come to”.That sealed it for me. Needless to say, thiswas my first choice as well. What an al-mighty difference between this one and allthe others I had been to!What are the criteria for admitting pupils?
Do the principals really have carte blancheto do as they please and accept whom theyplease? I am aware they have to take chil-dren from the immediate area, but how is itthat some pupils are in schools that are veryfar away from home? Do academic resultsplay a part? Can the education department do any-
thing about the flagrant disregard someteachers have towards prospective stu-dents? What is it with (some) principals? They seem to be vying with each other forthe best of everything. They seem to wantto take only the academically sound stu-dents because they want their school to be“thebest”.Doesn’t the averagepupil deservethe best education their parents can providefor them? Most geniuses were average stu-dents but excelled anyway.ANONYMOUSLetter shortened. – Ed

New home for BilboLUZUKO ZINI
THERondevlei male hippo, Bil-bo, will have a new home in aprivate game reserve in MosselBay once captured.
The Gondwana Private GameReserve teamed up with the Cityof Cape Town to try and capturethe hippo.
The City Of Cape Town’s biodi-versity manager, Julia Wood saysBilbo needs a new environment.
“The hippo shows no signs of re-turning to Rondevlei through thefunnels that staff have created inthe fence. A different home for theanimal needs to be found,” shesays.
“Zeekoevlei is an area sur-rounded by dense urban develop-ment.
“It is therefore not appropriatefor a dangerous wild animal to beleft in the vlei as it will come intoconflict and be at risk itself, or
pose a threat to the community.”Charleen White, PR officer for
the game reserve says attempts todart the hippo were unsuccessfulon Wednesday.
“After a long night, the teamfrom Gondwana Private Game Re-serve and the City of Cape Townhad to call off the “Houdini” hippocapture at about 4am in Zeekoev-lei,” she says.
The hippo was sighted last nightbut it had not come far enoughaway from the water to be darted.”
Mark Rutherford, director ofthe game reserve says Bilbo’s safe-ty is their main concern.
“We are not concerned that wewere unable to dart the hippo lastnight. This is usual capture proce-dure and can take weeks. The mostimportant factor is to ensure thatthe hippo’s safety is top priorityand we will only dart the animalif the location is completely com-fortable for the hippo with no riskfactors,” he says. Wood believes
the game reserve will be a goodhome for the hippo. “The City ofCape Town regularly looks for op-portunities for Western Cape na-ture reserves to take the surplushippos from Rondevlei. Gondwa-na was identified as a very goodoption because of its size andavailable habitat for hippo,” shesays.
Wood also says there will be noattempts to capture Bilbo in thenext week.
“Staff from City of Cape Town’sEnvironmental Resource Manage-ment Department will not be ac-tively capturing the animal dur-ing the next week. They will moni-tor it throughout the day and nightto establish its patterns. Once theanimal has established a patternwhich is favourable for darting, active capture will be initiatedagain. Staff will also ensure thatthe hippo has limited contact withpeople and remains safe,” shesays.
Little boys have soft heartsFROGS, snails and puppy dogs’ tails. That, says the nursery rhyme, iswhat little boys made of.
But not so for the Grade 1 boys atWynberg Boys Junior School, whoturned up at school for two weeksbearing tinned and dried foods.
Their gifts went to the AbundantLife Feeding Scheme, founded byMarlene Satarien in Lavender Hill. The feeding scheme is falling on
hard times and has had to reduce thenumber of mouths it feeds (“Feedingscheme forced to cut back”, People’sPost, 21 August).
Satarien says: “These supplieswill really help us feed some of thechildren we have had to turn away, due to lack of funds.”
Abundant Life feeds children fromone month to 18 years and is spon-sored by family and friends.
“We are constantly in need of do-nations of food and money to helpfeed the 150 children a daily meal. For some children it is their onlymeal of the day.”
This is the second year the schoolhas donated food to Abundant Life.
Each grade at Wynberg Boys Jun-ior collects money and goods forcharity as part of an outreachproject.

Teacher to raiseR1m for charityLIAM MOSES
A MITCHELL’S PLAIN teacherhas set himself the target of rais-ing R1 million for schools andcharities by running theChicagoMarathon in October this year.
Irafaan Abrahams, a teacher atRocklands High School, is alreadywell known across Cape Town forhis communitywork, having raisedover R250 000 in a similar projectlast year where he ran the NewYork Marathon.
This year 10 different schools andtwo cancer charities will be the re-cipients of any money raised.
Abrahams says that he chose tomake cancer charities and cancereducation a major part of thisyear’s programme because of hispersonal experience with the dis-ease. “The main point of this year’sproject is to raise awareness aboutcancer and spread of cancer. That’swhy the two beneficiaries this yearare amaBele Belles and Cancer-vive,” says Abrahams.
“It’s a big personal push also be-cause last year while I was runningtheNewYorkMarathonmy dad fellill and he was diagnosed with can-cer. It’s a big personal issue.”
Abrahams adds that two mem-bers of the Ommiedraai AthleticClub, which helps himwith one hiscommunity projects, were also re-
cently diagnosed with the disease. The money for the project will be
raised by the 10 schools Abrahamshas enlisted, Mitchell’s Plain-basedNGO Making an Impact ThroughSport (MITS), the Ommiedraai Ath-letics Club, the Itheko Sport Athlet-ic Club and the ARD Athletic Club.
While the schools will keep all ofthe money that they raise to use ontheir own projects, and possibly do-nate a percentage to the two benefi-ciary NGOs if they wish to, the oth-er four organisations will donatearound 50 percent of the moneythey raise to amaBele Belles andCancervive.
The schools and organisationswill raise the funds using collectioncards; donate R5 for each of the Chi-cago Marathons 43 kilometres. Ab-rahams says he is certain that theR1 million can be raised throughthe project.
“Every school on average gets athousand cards which could bringin R250 000 even if they only bringin half of that money and we add itup we will have our R1 million,”says Abrahams.
“I am very confident that we canraise this money this year.”

Crusaders FC turns 70LIAM MOSES
THE amateur football club that gave theworld Benedict “Benny” McCarthy this yearcelebrates its 70th birthday.
Crusaders Football Club, in Grassy Park,is one of South Africa’s oldest and most well-known clubs. It was founded by Dr ReverendChris Reddy in August 1972 as Young LadsFC and with just 16 players.
The club has since grown to a 300-strongmembership to become one of the most fa-mous amateur clubs in Cape Town.
Chairperson George Daintree, 57, saysmany Grassy Park clubs have opened andshut down during Crusaders’s life span.
He attributes his club’s survival to its firmfocus on youth and the lessons taught to hisgeneration of players by the club’s founders.
“Crusaders is still alive because of ourpredecessors who set an example for us.They were always there for the children andthe underprivileged,” says Daintree.
“They reached out to try and keep the chil-dren off the streets. We are not just for Col-oured people; we had members from all rac-es.”
He adds the legacy of the predecessors ismanifest in the fact there is “no club with abigger junior (team) than Crusaders”.
Daintree, who joined as an 11-year-old,should know.
“Our predecessors set the solid foundationfor what community-based football and afootball club is about.”
The football club was formed under theumbrella of the Crusaders Sports Body, which also offered cricket, baseball, softball, tennis and darts. A Christmas Choir and the
Good Sheppard Brigade also formed part ofthe body.
While most of the other Crusaders clubshave since closed down, the football, softball, baseball and tennis outfits, as well as theChristmas choir are still in existence and arerun independently.
Now 63, Harold Stuurman, says he re-mains involved with the club after 53 yearsbecause of the family atmosphere.
“When I joined this club I found people old-er than me who actually inspired me to be-long to this club and make an impact. I grewbecause of them,” says Stuurman.
“We built up a bond until we were actuallyfamily. The example they set for us as juniorsis what made me stay at this club. When old-er people passed on or retired, we as youngerpeople just carried on.”
Margaret Hector, whose late husband andsons all played for the club, has been in-volved for over 20 years as the club playedan important role in the life of her family.
“Crusaders is very special to me. When myhusband passed away 22 years ago, Crusad-ers was there for me. I will always put Cru-saders first,” she says.
“We are like a family. These were the fa-thers for my children at the field after myhusband passed away. The club helped meraise my children. They all lent a helpinghand.”
Crusaders will celebrate their platinum ju-bilee with an anniversary dinner on Friday23 November at the Grassy Park Civic Cen-tre.
All current and former members, playersand opponents are invited. Contact AlaricJacobs on 083 412 5608.

WOODLANDS United strengthened theirclaim for a place in the Engen KnockoutChallenge finals on Saturday after rout-ing Ashford Athletic in a play-off fixtureat the Stephen Reagan sports complex.
TheMitchell’s Plain side beat their Heath-field opponents 4-0 to claim the top spot inGroup 3 of the play-off round.Woodlands dominated the match virtually
from the first whistle, camping in the opposi-tion half, monopolising possession and limit-ing Ashford to counter attacks. The Ashford defence worked to keep Unit-
ed at bay for most of the first half, but theirresistance was finally broken around half-way through the first half. The ball was crossed into the penalty area
from a corner and Jason Miller capitalisedon Ashford’s inability to clear the danger bysmashing the ball into the roof of the net.Woodlands were not made to wait long for
their second goal and again took advantageof sloppy set-piece defending minutes later.Ashford failed to clear the ball from a cornerand Nazeer Stallboom slammed the ballhome during the ensuing goal-mouth scram-ble.Ashford grew desperate in the second half

confident his team will be able to beat Na-tional First Division side Vasco da Gama intheir next game to their place in the last 16.“I think we will go through now that we
have won. I wanted this result; I predictedthis result. We need one more win to gothrough,” says Claasen.“Weare playingVasconext and I feel confi-
dent. They are a big team, but winningagainst big teams is what us smaller teamsdo.”Claasen believes his team’s superior tac-
tics and hard work on the training groundpaid off during the match.“I thinkwewon because of our direct play.
We exploited their defensive system. Theirdefence was weak and ours was strong. That’s where we got our goals. I think ourtraining paid off. We focused on set piecesduring training.”Claasen, who also plays for theWoodlands
senior side, adds that his teamwere themoremotivated side because the club is turning20 this year. The final 16 teams for the Engen Knockout
