Pentecost 9
Sunday 2 August 2020
My oldest son worked for years with ‘First Answer
Quiz.” The name arises from our first answer often being right. I have – even at a First Answer Quiz –
changed my first response and got the answer wrong.
However, sometimes our first answer – the one we
know best – may be wrong or incomplete. We may get more information or even change our
perspective. That can be disconcerting.
Mostly, it is hard to shift from a familiar
understanding. We often have a particular interpretation of Bible texts – commonly because of what we were taught or heard preached.
Later we may find what we have believed, sometimes for years, is only one among other possibilities.
That too can be very disconcerting.
There are parts of the Bible that puzzle or concern
me. When that happens, I have choices: I could accept what seems to be meant; I could look for explanations
of a text; I could jump over that part and focus on what I can understand; or I could allow myself to sit
with uncertainty and not worry too much – and you may do likewise or you may think of other options …

Break thou the bread of life …
Old Isaac asked his nearby son …
Among us and before us, Lord …
Let us talents and tongues employ …
Genesis 32: 22-31
Mark Twain is reported to have said something like,
‘It’s not the parts of the Bible I can’t understand that worry me - it’s the parts I do understand that cause me trouble.’
Both the Old Testament and the Gospel Readings set for today
may raise questions.
You probably have your own ways of dealing with them. Talk to others. Do they share your view or have
another view altogether?
I invite you to look for and to consider other options alongside
your first answer – and then, perhaps, try a different one for ‘size’. Ian Matthew 14: 13-21

Gift Bags Christmas 2020
A number of people have asked about the
Christmas gift bags for UnitingAid and Zonta House and yes, we will be doing them again this
year, but with different contents.
Margaret Waller of UnitingAid has suggested giving Christmas treats, such as packets of
shortbread biscuits, mince pies etc., which must be commercially packed, with appropriate use by dates as per health and hygiene
regulations. Sadly, home made goodies cannot be accepted.
We will not be giving out bags or taking donations until October/
November. So, please do not bring items to church now, we will let you know when to do so closer to the time.
Thank you for you support. Amanda Brown

KIDS HOPE UPDATE FROM AMANDA BROWN
Kids Hope has been given the go ahead to recommence
mentoring again at Floreat Park Primary School.
Firstly, a big thank you to Sue Talbert and Ruth White - for your
contribution to Kids Hope and the students you have mentored.
Secondly, we need new mentors!
We have been partnering Floreat Primary School since 2017
with Kids Hope and have mentored a number of students with
different needs and built a good relationship with the school.
At present we have five mentors, three have been matched
with a student and there are presently four students being
assessed to join the program.
If you are interested in training as a mentor, or if would like
more information, please let me know. Training sessions are
held at All Saints by Rhondda Tilbrook and myself.
The aim of Kids Hope is to serve Floreat Primary School and
the children in our community. One hour, one child each week
can make all the difference and help build self-esteem and
resilience in children.
Thank you. Amanda Brown Mob 0434 260 117
