PCOG Yearly Team Meeting 2017 7 / 14
What is XDEM?
XDEM software is multi-physics simulationtoolbox modeling granular materials andprocesses
Particle MotionSnow, Sand, ...
Chemical ReactionsCoke, Iron ore, Biomass, ...
+ coupling external libraries: CFD with OpenFoam, FEM with Diffpack

Heat transfer to the wallsof a rotary furnace
XDEM–CFD coupling
Charge/Discharge of hoppers
Impacts on an Elastic MembraneXDEM–FEM coupling
XDEM needs HPC!
Hopper charge
• 15 s of simulation• 92 hours with 120 cores• Est. seq. time > 4 months
Hopper discharge
• 18 s of simulation• 120 hours with 144 cores• Est. seq. time > 6 months
BTW, thanks to the UL HPC team for their great support to LuXDEM!PCOG Yearly Team Meeting 2017 10 / 14

Summary of 2017
PCOG Yearly Team Meeting 2017 11 / 14
Very busy year with some boring stuffs• Moving to Belval
• Organizing SC-Camp 2017
• HPC upgrade kept us busy too
Got some work done too• A lot of coding/debugging in XDEM
• Submitted a H2020 proposal
• Supervising Alban and Wahid
• Load-balancing for XDEM• Broadphase collision detection• XDEM-OpenFoam coupling in parallel
Collaboration with PCOG• Optimization project with Greg: packing of particles
• Participation of UL HPC @ SC-Camp 2017
• Reporting bugs on the new HPC clusters
• Seb and I were to busy to do some work together
