After months of treading water, I called LCTaylor. They have over thirty years of experience dealing with situations just like mine. Together, we came up with a plan

Message from the Chair
By Merelyn Hunkin, DW Chairman
As I enter the last year of my terms as chairman of Dressage Winnipeg, I am filled with optimism for our club. Our board of directors is working hard to iron out the kinks for the year ahead. I appreciate the energy and fresh ideas which our new board members are bringing to the table, and the wisdom and knowledge shared by the board members in their second or third terms. We have the show year well in hand, another Give It A Go clinic is in the works by our new education chair, Karine Duhamel, and our scholarships and awards are in the planning stages. Our new sponsorship chairman, Kayla Kuebler, is busy reaching out to new and past supporters of our club. Our new volunteer chairman, Rhonda Wall Dueck, is planning to use the internet to more efficiently coordinate the volunteer jobs, which the DW members complete during the year.
Dressage Winnipeg will also be working with the Manitoba Horse Council on several projects. As usual, we will be supporting the Manitoba Equestrian Championships, an MHC competition. Our new director, Ann Loewen, will once more be DW’s coordinator of the dressage portion of the MEC. We will also support the MHC in some planned improvements to the Birds Hill Park facility, including the renovations of the dressage judges’ booths and the replacement of the sound system at the show site. Hopefully, these improvements will be realized before our first dressage show in May.
Be sure to pay attention to the E-blasts sent to our members through our membership chairman, Christine Stevenson. We will be announcing any EC rule changes which affect our shows, and some of the other changes you can expect to see in our 2016 prize list. Our latest Eblast concerns our new show manager.
As discussed at our 2015 AGM, the board has decided to find a show manager who receives remuneration from our shows’ office fees. We advertised this position for several weeks among our membership. After that time, we received one application. We are pleased to announce that Sue Matthews, who ably ran our shows in 2015, is the Dressage Winnipeg Gold and Bronze Shows Manager for 2016. Also, Susan Canal has agreed to be her Show Office Assistant at each show. We look forward to working with Sue and Susan to make 2016 another successful show season for our club!
Dressage Winnipeg owns two portable dressage rings, and since the MHC owns several dressage rings at the park which we are able to use, we have decided to sell one of our portable rings. This sale will be advertised in an E-blast later this spring, when we are better able to access the ring which is kept in our storage trailer at Birds Hill Park.
So, 2016 is adding up to be another busy year for our club. We look forward to seeing our members at DW shows and other activities this year. My sincere thanks to my board of directors who make these shows and activities possible.
Merelyn Hunkin, Dressage Winnipeg Chairman

Official Newsletter of Dressage Winnipeg 7 Winter 2016
We are looking for someone to take over the newsletter!
Do you like to write? Do you like to play around with graphics and layout? Lindsay and I are retiring from the job at the end of the year after enjoying it for five years for me, and six years for Lindsay. But the time has come to hand it over. It is a wonderful way to volunteer for the club. Likely it would be best to have two people, one to do the editing and one to do the layout work as we have done although there may be someone who has the skills in both areas to handle it all themselves.
Please think about it and, if you would like, you could work with us over one or more of the three newsletters we have left to produce and work on ways to make it your own.
Contact Barb Wansbutter at [email protected] or any of the board members.

Our 2015 Provincial Champions!!
First Level AA CH – Tiffany Pass & GeneralTiffany trains under Chris Dolinski at West Wind Stables and also takes clinics with her favourite clinician, Elaine Potter, 3 or 4 times a year. This was their first season at First Level.
General is an 11 year old Hanoverian/Irish Sport Horse gelding. Tiffany got him when he was just turning 3 years old and knew nothing but how to go in a straight line. She says that circles took them quite a while to master. They have come a long way from there!
First Level Open Freestyle CH – Kayla Kuebler & Northern ChinookKayla trains with Eddo Hoekstra on a regular basis. She has been riding freestyle for about four years, she did her first freestyle with her mare, Mary Poppins.
Northern Chinook is a 21 years young Draft/Paint gelding owned by Gary Mittermayr. Before Gary bought him, Chinook was a trail horse. He has adapted very well to his new job! Kayla started to ride him 3 years ago when she had to scratch a horse from a show and Gary offered the ride. They have been a great partnership ever since.
Second Level JR CH – Amelia Baker & FlamboyantSixteen year old Amelia has trained with Gaetane Manaigre for three years. This was her first year at Second Level and she did a fantastic job with a new partner!
Amelia got Flamboyant, a 12 year old Hannoverian gelding, in the middle of July so had less than two months with him before the Championship show. She says that Flambo is an amazing partner both on and off the saddle. He is calm and patient under saddle and goofy and fun in the barn.

Thank You Very Much!Thank you... I would like to send a big thank out to Gary & Coreen Mittermayr for supporting the whole Dressage community. From volunteering to be show site security, to supporting the club raffles, to giving and supporting our young riders in have great showing experiences. Gary has taken up the challenge of entering the show ring himself and Coreen has her own horse that they rescued from a terrible situation. Their support to the horse community is above and beyond, and they truly deserve a big thank you!Shelly Kuebler

Second Level AA CH – Cheryl Heming & EntrepidAdult Amateur rider Cheryl Heming has been taking regular clinics for several years with Bonny Bonnello and Armand Valkenborg. She also trains with Judy Wilson of Deerfield Farm. This was their first year showing at Second Level.
Entrepid is an 11 year old Dutch Warmblood gelding – KWPN. Cheryl went to look at an older horse to purchase at Karen & Nick Rempel’s Valley View Farm outside of Brandon in 2008. She saw Baxter and he won her heart and came home with her as an unstarted 3 year old. Cheryl says that he is one of the smartest horses that she has ever worked with.
Training Level Open CH - Gaetane Manaigre & Highlight SNGaetane Manaigre of Gator’s Riverside Stable had a great season, capturing four provincial championships on four different horses. Gaetane, a respected local coach, has been training with Armand Valkenborg for the last 10 years. She is thrilled to be working with four very talented horses owned by Dr. Shireen Naidoo.
Highlight SN is a 7 year old black bay Hanoverian mare who was purchased at the Verden Auction in Germany as a 4 year old. At the time of purchase, Highlight was 15hh3 and grew so fast that it took a while for her to be even and strong enough to start showing. She is now a beautiful 17hh! She is a cuddly and friendly girl who hates blankets and can escape from them without ripping them or undoing any straps. She lost her blanket on her flight over from Germany and arrived in Toronto
in -20 weather without it.
First Level Open CH – Gaetane Manaigre & First Romance SNFirst Romance SN is a 5 year old bay Oldenburg gelding. Romeo is a horse with beautiful movement who was purchased in 2014 from HW Farms in Germany. This season he was going through his bratty teenage years but Gaetane still found him to be a pleasant ride. She and Shireen were very pleased when Romeo was given a “10” from a judge for his walk this season.
Official Newsletter of Dressage Winnipeg 12 Winter 2016
Third Level Open CH – Gaetane Manaigre & Prince Charming SNPrince Charming SN is a 13 year old black bay Oldenburg gelding purchased from California in May 2015 but originally imported from Germany. Charmer is a great horse with a super temperament. His owner, Shireen, says that she enjoys riding him and that he is very forgiving of her mistakes.
Fourth Level Open CH – Gaetane Manaigre & Hyacinthe HHyacinthe H is a 10 year old chestnut Trakhener mare who was bought from Ontario in February 2014. Like many very talented horses, Holly is very reactive, sensitive and temperamental. She often jumps sideways like a deer while going down centre line or spooks at the judge’s booth. This is not one for her owner to ride but Gaetane makes it look easy.
Third Level AA CH – Lindsay Feller & UnbelievableAdult Amateur rider Lindsay Feller has been taking lessons for some time with Elaine Banfield. She also takes clinics with Bonny Bonnello and Irene Scheckendiek . In past years she has really enjoyed the DW dressage camps, training with Roz and Joanne Crilley.
Unbelievable is a 15 year old Canadian Warmblood, chestnut mare. Nelly was home bred, born and raised. Lindsay’s brother, Jamie, did the original backing and then Lindsay has done all the rest of the training herself, with lots of help from her mom, her coach and some great clinicians.
Despite Nelly’s good looks and sweet face, she can be quite the firecracker at times - typical chestnut mare! Nelly can be pretty spooky - she sees everything - literally. Lucky for me I know this mare inside and out and over the years I have learned to tell the difference when she is genuinely scared of something and when she’s faking it! Yes, she is that smart! She knows when it’s time to work though - and she tries hard for me. We have learned dressage together and I have brought her up to where she is today, both of us learning as we go.

CPC National Dressage
August 18 - 21, 2016
Birds Hill Park Equestrian Centre Birds
Manitoba Pony Club are very excited to be hosting the 2016 Canadian Pony Club National Dressage Championships. The competition will be held at
the beautiful Birds Hill Park Equestrian Centre in August.
CPC has thirteen Provincial Pony Clubs, who may each send two qualifying members to the National Event. The host region can send four riders. Members qualify at
Training or First Level Dressage. Manitoba Pony Club must supply each rider a suitable horse.
Competitors draw their horse on the first evening, then they meet their horse and their groom (whom is usually the horse’s owner). They participate in a Day 1 Clinician day, which will help establish the suitability of the horse/rider match. Day 2 – Technical Test 1 and 2 and turnout. Marks are appropriately awarded. Day 3 – Mystery Tests are ridden and Stable Management marks
Manitoba Pony Clubs qualifiers in 2016 are: Emma Creasy (Prairie Valley); Piper Lussier (Quarry Ridge); Michaela Pankratz (Quarry Ridge) and Karla Iverson (Red River).
Our past qualifying members who have attended CPC National Events have all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Pony Club offers a structured Education program, which allows its members to test PC levels, which are recognized throughout the world. The Regional Clubs, hosts Regional Qualifiers for several disciplines: Dressage, Showjumping, Quiz, Rally and Tetrathlon. The qualifying members must be of a particular riding level and age to be able to represent their region. National Representation allows our members the chance to travel Canada wide, even Worldwide and experience a variety of equine disciplines.
Should any Dressage Winnipeg members like to volunteer, or offer their horses to be used in this prestigious event, or offer their homes to help billet the competitors and chaperones, who are traveling from all over Canada, please do not hesitate to contact me.
