There just isn’t enough time for everything on our to-do list-and there never will be. Successful people don’t try to do everything.

They learn to focus on the most important tasks and make sure those get done.

They eat their frogs.

There’s an old saying; “that if the first thing you do each morning is eat a live frog, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’re done with the worst thing you’ll have to do all day.”

SET THE TABLE

Clarity is perhaps the most important concept in successful goal setting. Be 100% clear on your goals and don’t deviate from them!

1. Decide on exactly what you want

2. Write it down

3. List out everything that you need to do to achieve your goal

4. Create a plan based on the above

Clear written goals have a focusing effect on your thinking.

They motivate you, energise you and help you overcome procrastination.

Your turn:

What exactly do you want to achieve?

Page 16: Participant Guidebook · Manage self -11 How to eat a Frog EAT THAT FROG For Brian Tracy, eating a frog is a metaphor for tackling your most challenging tasks-but also the one that

What are the actions that need to be achieved in order to get there?

“Time = life; therefore, waste your time and waste of your life, or master your time and master your life. “Alan

PLAN EVERY DAY

“Your ability to set goals, make plans and take action determines the course of your life. The very act of thinking and planning triggers creativity and increases your mental and physical energy” Brian Tracey

“The key is in not spending time, but in investing it.” Stephen R. Cove

Page 17: Participant Guidebook · Manage self -11 How to eat a Frog EAT THAT FROG For Brian Tracy, eating a frog is a metaphor for tackling your most challenging tasks-but also the one that

Your turn:

Looking at your goals and the actions required to achieve them, put them into an order of steps to create a plan to follow.

Now highlight your first step that you can do to begin.

“If you want to make good use of your time, you’ve got to know what’s most important and then give it all you’ve got.” Lee Iacocca

CONSIDER CONSEQUENCES

The potential consequences of any task are the key factors involved in prioritization and importance. Taking a long-term view makes sure you are doing today what will help you achieve your long-term future goals.

Three questions for maximum productivity:

5. What are my highest importance activities?

6. What can I and only I do that if not done will make a real difference?

7. What is the most valuable use of my time?

Page 18: Participant Guidebook · Manage self -11 How to eat a Frog EAT THAT FROG For Brian Tracy, eating a frog is a metaphor for tackling your most challenging tasks-but also the one that

SET DEADLINES

“Only about 2% of people can work entirely without supervision. To reach your full potential you must form the habit of setting deadlines and putting pressure on yourself to complete tasks. You must choose your own frogs and make yourself eat them in order of importance.” Brain Tracey

Your turn:

1. Look at your list of prioritized activities, now set achievable deadlines for them

Page 20: Participant Guidebook · Manage self -11 How to eat a Frog EAT THAT FROG For Brian Tracy, eating a frog is a metaphor for tackling your most challenging tasks-but also the one that

2. Who can support you and help hold you accountable?

3. Place those deadlines into your calendar.

TAKE IT ONE SLICE AT A TIME

One of the best ways to overcome procrastination is for you to get your mind off the huge task in front of you and focus on a single action that you can take. One slice at a time, when that slice is finished you will feel like doing just one more slice until before you know it the job is completed.

Your turn:

Looking at your goals, how could you break them up into smaller slices?

Page 25: Participant Guidebook · Manage self -11 How to eat a Frog EAT THAT FROG For Brian Tracy, eating a frog is a metaphor for tackling your most challenging tasks-but also the one that

Which slice will you tackle first?

DEVELOP A SENSE OF URGENCY

“Highly productive people take the time to think, plan and prioritise, as a result they seem to power through enormous amounts of work in the same amount of time an average person socializes, and does low value or non-important things. They activate the ‘Momentum Principle of Success’, which says that although it may take tremendous energy to overcome inertia and get started…it then takes far less energy to keep going.” Brian Tracey

Page 26: Participant Guidebook · Manage self -11 How to eat a Frog EAT THAT FROG For Brian Tracy, eating a frog is a metaphor for tackling your most challenging tasks-but also the one that

DON’T SPEND YOUR WILLPOWER, INVEST IT

A habit is an action that is repeated with little or no willpower or thought. The power of a habit lies in the latter part of that statement…’little or no willpower or thought.

“The glorious benefit of a habit is that it converts something that requires a lot of willpower and focus into something that is automatic and unconscious.” Tynan from Superhuman by Habit.

Your turn:

List 3 old habits you would like to stop

List 3 new habits that would assist you reaching your goals

What will be the biggest obstacles to creating new habits?

SKIPPING!

Whenever you are going to skip a new habit, force yourself to admit why you are skipping but NEVER skip twice!

Missing two days of a habit is suicide. Missing one day reduces your chance of success by approx. 5% missing two

days reduces it by approx. 40%, and three days you may as well start over.

So…if you do find yourself missing once, doing it the next time should become a top priority in order to invest

wisely.

“One worthwhile task carried to a successful conclusion is worth half-a-hundred half-finished tasks.” Malcolm

TECHNOLOGY; FRIEND OR FOE?

Technology can be your best friend or worst enemy. In today’s technologically intense world, we are bombarded by information from all sides and many of us appear obsessed with staying in contact all the time and anytime.

You are in control of the technology not the other way around. Choose to turn off, put down or leave behind to give

yourself a regular break.

LEVERAGE YOUR STRENGTHS

You have special talents and strengths that make you different to anyone else. You can do something or learn to do somethings that make you extraordinarily valuable to yourself and others. Your job is to identify those areas and leverage them.

Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field.

Your turn:

BELIEVE, BELIEVE, BELIEVE

Most of our emotions, positive or negative are determined by our self-talk. Its not WHAT happens to you but HOW you interpret what happened that determines how you feel. Your version of events impacts whether you feel motivated or de-motivated after.

We choose whether to be offended, angry, hear the good or only the bad. Optimism is a wonderful way to believe in yourself.

HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE

Your actions don’t only affect yourself but everyone around you. Co-workers, managers, family and friends.

To be a high performer you need to identify what responsibilities/actions you are accountable for, that if not done have a huge impact or flow on effect on others.

Remember the chain is only as strong as the weakest link.

How do you hold yourself accountable?

Who else holds you accountable?

LEARN TO SAY NO

Most people see saying no as a possible CLM or career limiting move. However, when done effectively, it actually can boost your career.

Saying no effectively, takes courage, smarts, honesty, strategic knowledge and demonstrates you care about the

relationship. These are all traits of a high performer and leader.

Your turn:

Write down one task that or situation that you would like to say No to because it is not aligned with your goals.

Write down the reasons why saying yes are not beneficial in the long term to the company or you

Page 42: Participant Guidebook · Manage self -11 How to eat a Frog EAT THAT FROG For Brian Tracy, eating a frog is a metaphor for tackling your most challenging tasks-but also the one that

What other options can you suggest other than you doing the task that will also be beneficial long term?

1. State the No upfront without apologizing – I’m not able to work on ‘project x’ for you …

2. Provide a succinct reason that’s strategic, smart and honest-because my time today is committed to ‘project y’ which has its deadline COB…

3. Give a helpful option that demonstrates your willingness to help as well as understanding of the business.

However, If the deadline for project could be extended I’d be able to help or…

If you speak to my manager and they can get someone else to work on project you’d love to help.

What impression can always saying yes give to others?
