Communities get to decide which spots to reclaim and how to use these new spaces to best suite their needs.
Reclaimed Streets | New Pedestrian Spaces | Engaged Communities
Roads in the modern city act as barriers and dividers for pedestrians and their living, working, and meeting spaces. The high volumes of automobile traffic on city roads creates a vicinity of danger for pedestrians and cyclists, and isolates drivers from their urban environment.
In order to engage and strengthen communities, we must reintroduce the street to pedestrians; it must become a place where city blocks and people merge. By reclaiming on-street parking spots, we can push public space into the street wihtout hindering traffic. Place-making on the street reintroduces walkable destinations and discourages car travel.
PARK SPACE
ReclaimingToday Public Led Spaces
Park [Space] is a customizable and modular public space kit that is distributed to communities where they need them the most. While the kit is distributed from a central organization, community members can use the catalog to plan out their Park [Space] by choosing what pieces they need.
Park [Space] is designed to be modular. The main parts consist of a wooden base and smaller wooden pieces that stack to form walls. Additional prefabricated plug-ins include wall extending seats, shelves, countertops, planters, and an awning. Construction is meant to be tool free, stacking and hooking items together, allowing anyone to set up their space.
Community members can further customize their space and could include elements such as plants, paint, chairs, and other decorations.
