My Fellow Civitans! This is the beginning of our second centennial. How exciting, to start this year with enthusiasm, innovative ideas, and an eye on the future. There are some fantastic Civitans in action around the District with programs that are definitely among the best in the nation. Some of you may have noticed that you are getting newsletters from oth-er clubs already. We hope to expand that sharing as we grow. My message is simple.
Each of us have a re- sponsibility to keep
the high ideals and the mission of Civitan. We must each do our part to
build upon the strong foundation given us by our founder and work to improve the lives of the needy and spe-
cial needs citizens in our communities. RE-INVENT- Civitan programs are good. We must continue the spirit of Civitan as we restructure our programs to meet the

changing needs of current communities. Be-coming more efficient in the deliverance of ser-vice, knowledge and fellowship is an absolute necessity to survive another centennial. By pub-licizing, modifying, and executing our energetic Civitan programs throughout the District, we draw the attention of others. RE-ENERGIZE- More Civitan mem-bers will enable clubs to deliver more programs to our communities. Building new clubs, and training Junior Civitans are vital to the growth and revitalization of Civitan clubs. Everyone has a talent to contribute, we just have to find that talent and use it. This year I would like to see each area sponsor at least one new club and each club add no less than two members per quarter. The Civitan Research Center is working toward treatment and prevention of many neuro-logical diseases that affect the lives of citizens in our neighborhoods. Civitans support the Civi-tan Research Center, it is important to make it known to our communities what the Civitan Re-search Center is doing for diseases like autism,

PIGS Project: from Misty Konow Your PIGS (Past Involved Governors) want you know how involved we are and we want to get you involved as well! We have a project we need your help with at every SC District meeting. For our November 4th meeting we ask that you bring new toys for children ranging from infants to 16. These toys will be donated to the Kool Kids Toy Chest at the Children’s Hospital of Richland Memorial. Each time a child un-
dergoes an invasive procedure they are given a golden key to unlock a treasure chest. Please help us to ensure that no child ever finds an empty chest. A little can go a very long way so please help!
This Kool Kids project at the November District Meeting is being led by 2 PIGS from the Greater Charleston Civitan Club, Mary Welch & Nancy Ball. So pitch in to make this a huge success and help them to make this initial PIG project a real community bene-fit.
We would love to share more details about this project and what we have planned for the next District meetings. Interested? Need a speaker for an upcoming meeting? If so, contact me at [email protected] or give me a call at (803)524-8072. Any one of your past governors would be glad to visit your club...all you have to do is ask!!!
In the coming year, we’ll be marshalling additional support for projects at each SC District Meeting and the following are planned for us to pitch in & assist our community:
January meeting:
Project - local food bank/pantry Project Leaders - Steve Doudoukjian & Mike Taylor May meeting: Project - Lighthouse For Life
Project Leader - Lura Boggs August convention: Project - backpacks for kids Project Leaders - Doug McKenzie & Ken Norton

Gov. Doug McKenzie organized a rewarding SC District Con-vention in Hilton Head from September 29 to October 1st….despite the “rain date” caused by hurricane Irma. It was a good way to end the 2016-7 year and usher in the 2017-8 Civitan Year for the SC District! Duane Capps, Civitan International President for 2016-7, was present to assist with updating the attendees on the activities and goals at Civitan International headquarters and to provide some hints to improve project and membership projects in each club. High on his list was delegation to utilize the skills and energies of more club members, and the critical role of follow up on successful completion. No doubt his easy-to-spot shirt made him an easy mark at the convention. At awards ceremonies, the district recognized the top contributors in SC for 2016-7. Some of the most notable are cited here. The lifetime achievement Dou-Doukjian Award was given to a big district contributor and inspirational Civitan, Mike Taylor….well deserved! The Otis Jeffcoat Award was given to a Civitan who has been at the heart of many of the district projects for years, Misty Konow; her contributions
have been felt in every corner of the state. Individual project awards of note went to the Civitan of the Year in the SC District, Kevin Davidson from the Greenville Club and top First Year Civitan was Magan Keilty, Dutch Fork Club. The Greenville Club racked up a series of top honors including first place in fruit-cake sales, Out-standing Newsletter, Outstanding Web-site, and top Can-dybox collections! However the top award, the Gover-nor’s Trophy for top Civitan Club in SC went to the Colum-bia Civitan Club! The depth & breadth of Civitan Club im-

pact on communities throughout SC is clear through the nomina-tions and applications for the awards this year. Just in time to begin the October change of the guard in the SC District, Duane Capps installed the 2017-8 Officers and Directors for the SC District. Belita Broadus is off and running as the SC District Gov. and get-ting a hand from the new Gov. Elect, Gary Finley. Now we’re into a new Civitan Year with lots of op-portunities & chal-lenges under the motto of Kindle Your Fire!

South Carolina District Meeting Agenda
November 4, 2017
Our Savior Lutheran Church
1500 Sunset Blvd
West Columbia, South Carolina 29169
Each SC District Civitan Club is asked to bring a gift basket for a raffle at the meeting on 11/4. Please try to make this a special event to raise
some additional funds for the District!
THANKS!!!
Retts Syndrome, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, etc. and ask others to join us in the effort. When we bond together for support we are stronger and we can accomplish much more, let’s bond for the Civitan Research Center this year. EVOLVE- This District want to be known as volunteers making life better for the needy and special needs in our community. We have successfully delivered this service to the community for one hundred years and we will successfully deliver Civitan services into the next century by increasing our numbers, service, knowledge, and fellowship. Our Civigram and Webpage are excellent devices to spread the good news about club activities. Each club is encouraged to send your activities and pictures to the Civigram and Webpage so that we can all share in the successes of Civitans across the state. I look forward to seeing Civitans at the District Meeting on No-vember 4th. Terry Schrimscher, Public Relations Specialist from Civitan International, is our featured speaker. Terry will bring ideas and ways for us to grow and reach more people in our neighborhoods.
Each club is asked to bring a basket for the drawing. Make
your club’s basket the most ticketed basket.

WHAT IS CIVITAN?
Civitan is a worldwide, all vol-unteer service organization where men and women have an organized way of ap-proaching local community problems through service and fund raising.
We emphasize serving people with developmental disabili-ties. Local clubs are support-ed by Civitan International, which was organized in 1917 and spans over 24 countries. The word CIVITAN is a coined word that comes from the Lat-in word “CIVITAS”, which means CITIZENSHIP.
