A splendid history.

The history of paint began quite humblywith a tiny insect which, at the time, was very widespread in northern India. The pigment of this so-called lac insect(tachardia lacca) was called “laksha” in Sanskrit, meaning “red tree lacquer”. In Roman literature, it can be found as“lacca”.

Lacquer had its first heyday in ancientChina, however, where bronze cultobjects were decorated with lacquerinlays as early as 1300 BC; over the centuries, using lacquer for decorativedesign became a fine art in Asia. In the17th century, East Asian lacquers foundtheir way to Europe, where demandsoon boomed. Lacquer and similar words derived from the same root continue to be used in many languagesspoken around the globe.

Two properties quickly made lacquerpopular with artisans and their customersalike, namely the ability to protect sur-faces and the ability to change their colour.Given that lacquers have an excellentcapacity to bind colour pigments, theyopened up undreamed-of possibilities. They made musical instruments look morebrilliant, turned furniture into shiningobjects and even transformed simplesnuffboxes made from papier-mâché intoprecious little gems.

It is therefore not surprising to see thatlacquers began to play an important, innovative role again at the beginningof the automobile era. Even though the first cars were nothing more than carriages that were driven by a com-bustion engine instead of being pulled bya horse, lacquers and paints were partof the game from the very beginning.

It all started with lacquer.

Whether it was Maybach, Daimler orBenz, all car makers of the time usedwood to build the bodies of their vehicles. The superstructure of a car from 1893, for instance, consisted of a wooden skeleton covered with a sailcloth or wooden planks. A coating of resin, asphalt and oil gave this new-fangled mode of transport its sombre black look. The advent of massproduction was still a long way off, and those carriage paints needed somefour weeks to dry. But the coatings pickedup speed, with fast nitro-cellulose paintsrevolutionising assembly line productionin the 1920s.

From carriages to cars.

They were applied using compressed airand dried within next to no time. Syntheticresin replaced the not overly resistantnitro-cellulose in the early 1950s.

A sigh of relief for people and theenvironment. The development of reactive drying, 2-pack products on an acrylic resin basisrepresented another milestone in thehistory of paints and lacquers. But while2-pack technology was still the be-all and end-all in automotive mass production and the refinishing sector, paint researchers were already workingon new ambitious projects. They wantedto launch particularly environmentallyfriendly materials in the market.

The experiments in the paint labs weresuccessful. High-solid paints added a whole new dimension of quality to automotive (re)finishing. The real breakthrough came, however, with thedevelopment of waterborne coatingsystems, whose content of hazardousorganic solvents has been reduced to a minimum. Today, waterborne paints are increasingly being used both in automotive production and in the refinishing sector.

The vehicle as a personal trademark.

In a world full of interchangeableproducts, individuality plays an in-creasingly important role. Individualswant to stand out from the crowdand demonstrate their social status. In their quest for originality, themobile generation have found anobject that is eminently suitable forbeing transformed into somethingtruly unique – the car or motorbikethey are using everyday.

Whether it’s a sports convertible, a familysedan, a company car or a custommotorbike – the vehicle becomes thepersonal trademark of its owner. Withthe help of creative painting techniquesand some imaginative ideas, virtually alldesign dreams can be put into practice.

A new look from the computer. Many motorists would like to customisetheir vehicles with an individual finish. In the past, however, they lacked thepossibility to get a realistic idea of whatthe finished vehicle would really look like. Nowadays professional designdrafts can be produced on high-poweredpersonal computers. Computer technologyand the appropriate know-how make the design proposals look so realistic thatthey can be used both as sales argumentsin customer presentations and as modelsto copy by the refinisher in the bodyshop.

First of all, it is important, however, to“connect” with the customer and find outwhat they really want. Once you know, your creative skills come into play. Proposea solution which meets the customer’sexpectations not only visually but alsotechnically and quality-wise. Demonstrateyour professionalism to the customer by offering them sound advice and persuasive solutions.

Your customer wants to get a more realistic idea of

what their vehicle will look like? No problem with

the latest computer software!

Standing out from the crowd. While individuals normally want unusual, emotional custom looks for their vehicles, companies have different priorities. Commercial vehicles primarily serve ascarriers of advertising and information.Entrepreneurs want their fleet to attractattention to their company, to differentiatethemselves from their competitors. Theytherefore need an attention-grabbinglook that stands out from the competition. At the same time, all relevant informationmust be visible and understandable atfirst sight. Needless to say, the type ofcompany also plays an important role for your proposed design. For instance, the truck of a local brewery should look different from the van of a small florist’s shop, while the car of a nursingcare service does not really have a lot in common with the bus of a tour operator.

To meet all these different requirements, you should put yourself in the position ofyour customer. Any sales activity thereforestarts with thorough research during yourtalks with your customer. Get an idea ofyour customer’s market situation. Onceyou know how their competitors advertisetheir business, you can more easily comeup with a better solution.

This way, your know-how will make asignificant contribution to your customer’sbusiness success. Which, in turn, is goodfor your business too.

The art of creative illustration.

Airbrush is a painting technique thatutilises a precision spray to applypaint. Airbrush has existed in oneform or another since the days ofthe caveman. In modern times, theairbrush is a sophisticated instrumentthat allows gifted professionals toachieve very complex paintings inrapid succession.

The range of creative possibilities isalmost unlimited. The best resultsare obtained with realistic imagessince the airbrush device is capableof details as fine as a strand of hairor as broad as a basketball in theblink of an eye.

Your basic equipment should consist ofspecial airbrush guns with exchangeableglass cups, which allow you to changecolours quickly without having to cleanthe cups in-between.

Well-equipped for the job at hand.

Depending on the job at hand, you neednozzles with a diameter between 0.1 and0.5 mm. You also need a compressed airmicrometer for the air hose (1 to 3 bar),commercial film cutters as well as infinitelyadjustable double-line cutters and cuttingcompasses.

Useful accessories include fibreglasserasers, a rubber roller to apply films andadhesive tapes, a flexible measuringtape, various rulers as well as fine paintbrushes for retouching.

So-called vignettes, tribals and similar symbols are particularly elegant eye-catchers, attracting attention without appearing too bold. These fashionableornamentations are the ideal solution forapplications requiring style instead ofdominance. They may be used individuallyor in attractive combinations. For perfectresults, the individual templates must fitexactly and the colours need to be wellmatched.

The latest trend is to use graffiti-style designs, adding a strong urban flavour to cars which reallystand out from the crowd.

In any case it is important to create adynamic and expressive draft whichmakes a powerful statement.

Attractive variations of abstract forms.

What looks so easy and spontaneous is often the result of complex planningand great design skills. Needless to say,you also need creative imagination. Realmasters of the art even use freehandtechnique to design a wide variety of different motifs – from bold to discreet, in all the colours of the rainbow or insubtle tone-in-tone arrangements.

Whether it’s a nature scene, an imaginative creature, a funny cartoon or two lovers set againstthe background of the setting sun –airbrush lets you create realisticimages of extreme intensity.

By highlighting, leaving out or exaggerat-ing certain aspects of the motif you cancreate unusual effects. Each scenario youtransfer to the vehicle body is truly unique. Even complex 3D designs are possible, showing off the creative powerof airbrush design in perfection.

Creative refinishing techniques. The full range of unlimited possibilities.

Nothing is impossible! Modernpaints and sophisticated techniquesallow you to put even the mostunusual design ideas into practice. The large number of different refinishing techniques offers a hostof alternatives – from classical painter’s techniques to avant-gardemethods for entirely new surfaceeffects.

This variety of techniques allows you tooffer your customers tailor-made designsolutions. A parquet maker will certainlylike the wood grain effect (see below) on his company car, while a beverages company will prefer the refreshing waterdrop effect (page 16).

The typical denim blue look would be agood fit for a jeans store, while a heatingand air-conditioning manufacturer willquickly warm to the so-called “flow” technique, which perfectly visualises thechange from cool blue to hot red.

This is how a creative refinisher gives a simple car a fashionable denim look.

(1) How to produce a water drop effect: Apply filler to surface and sand with 800 sandpaper. Apply medium-light blue or turquoise as base colour. (2) Apply water

drops in the desired size to the basecoat at low pressure (0.2 to 0.5 bar). The nozzle should have a diameter of 1.4 or 1.5 mm. (3) Spray dark blue topcoat at a

sharp angle from one side and apply white or silver basecoat from the other side. (4) Allow water drops and paint to dry. Apply two coats of 2K Clear. Sand

carefully after a few days and reapply clearcoat.

Paint finish with water drop effect.

The real-life model.

Creative refinishing ideas with water.

The right coating technique allowsyou to realise all wishes in perfectvisual quality. So dare to take a newapproach instead of staying in thesame old groove.

This is why we have chosen this particu-larly attractive example from the largespectrum of refinishing techniques toexplain it in greater detail.

You will see that some of the old rulesdo not apply to custom refinishing – forinstance that “water and paint don’tmix”. While this is true for “normal” refinishing, this incompatibility can beused in custom refinishing to create aremarkably realistic water drop effect.

Water surface technique: Paint is applied onto water puddles, which are

wiped off once the paint has dried and recoated with several layers of

clearcoat.

Paste technique: In this case, viscous wallpaper paste is used as a release

agent.

Special effects are created by applying and/or removing paint using film.

Ingeniously simple – paint effects created with film.

The painting techniques presented in this Standothek can be found in the books ”Kreative Lackiertechniken“ and ”Neue kreative Lackiertechniken“ by Michael Rehm, Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, München.

This combination of text and colour

goes against our usual perception and

experience.

Our world is colourful. Very colourful, indeed. And the natural colourfulnesscan be enhanced even further. If theassumed 160 colours of the spectrumare mixed with black and white, we get some 100,000 shades thatcan still be perceived by the humaneye – a truly unimaginable number.

Life without colours would be dull andboring. Each season has its own colours, which is reflected in the fashion and cos-metics sectors, for instance. Spring isassociated with pastel shades such asapricot, camel, grey blue, salmon, beigeand delicate blue. Typical summer coloursinclude dark blue, deep brown, bluishreds, silver grey and lilac. Warm, richcolours such as rust-brown, khaki, petrol, tomato red, jade-green as well as cop-per and bronze shades are characteristicof autumn, whereas winter colours arecool, yet intense - like black, night blue, cherry and ruby red.

While each individual perceives coloursdifferently, the effects of certain coloursare undisputed. The following coloursstand for the following effects:

Yellow = extrovert, dominant, indi-cates change

Green = love of life, close to natureTurquoise = tension, perseveranceCyan = concentration, sense of

dutyOrange = fantastic, exuberant Red = energy, excitementMagenta = individualityBlue = cool, soothingViolet = solemn, mysticalBrown = earthy, healthyBlack = serious, elegant White = cheerful, pureGrey = balancing, neutralGold = majestic, brilliantSilver = light, shining

Every time has its colours. This isparticularly true of automotive engineering. In the golden fifties,pastel-coloured cars were all around.Ten years later, contrasting colourswere in high demand. In the seventies, everybody wanted strong colours, while the eighties saw black andwhite take centre-stage. Thenineties were very colourful, with anew trend to metallic shades latermaking for a more elegant look.

Up-and-coming colours include red, orange and green in attractive shadesranging from intense signal effects to discreet elegance. In the sports and compact car segment, these colourfultrend-setters are already very much inevidence.

When it comes to design, colours are of major importance. Especially in thebusiness segment, colours play an important role in a company’s identityand are an integral element of the corporate design. Characteristic examples include the Ferrari red, the silver of the Silver Arrows and the blue-white BMW logo. Could you imagine the Coca Cola logo in green or the Nivea tin in yellow? Not really!

It is therefore very important to offeryour commercial customers a designwhose colour(s) fully match their corporate identity.

Colour trends and zeitgeist.

At the top of the worldwide popularityranking, we have the so-called neutralcolour shades such as grey, white, black, beige and, above all, silver. Silverhas held the top position for new carregistrations for several years. One inthree newly registered cars in Europe hasa silver finish. This leading position isbeing threatened only in Japan, wherewhite has clearly been catching up.

Silver is likely to remain in favour for quitea while, benefiting from the introductionof imaginative surface effects with differently coloured glitter pigments. Refined compositions with changingeffects ensure that the range of neutralcolours never gets boring.

In our streets, other colours also play animportant role, e.g. blue, which remainshighly popular.

Alert! Help! Caution!Colours are information carriers.

Colours are not only a natural phenomenon. Colours trigger awhole variety of different emotions. They make us cheerful or sad, warn us, seduce us, frighten us,make us hungry, match or don’tmatch with other colours. Butcolours are also a question of personal taste.

This is why colours play a very importantrole in car design, because depending on which colour you use, you will achieve different effects. Acceptance if the colourchosen is generally perceived as matchingthe object – the sun has to be yellow andnot blue. Disapproval if the colour is notin line with the material – snow is whiteand never red. Curiosity if the colour isused in a surprising context – Milka’s purple cow is a good example. You shouldtherefore think very carefully about howto use colours.

Great symbolic power.

When speaking of colour, one should not forget the form. Both elements are inseparably linked – a fact you shouldtake advantage of. In this context, it ishelpful that many combinations ofcolours and forms will trigger specificassociations. Just think of traffic signs and their specific colours – and the irritation one experiences whentravelling abroad and being confrontedwith “strange” traffic signs.

So whenever colours and forms are usedin the wrong context or with a wrongmeaning, they will lead to confusion and, ultimately, disapproval and rejection.

The surroundings also have an impact onthe visual effect. The grey in the middle is the same in all three images. The difference is exclusively attributable tothe different surrounding colour.

If used properly, colours can also deceivethe human eye. Skilful colour gradations, for instance, can produce a certainthree-dimensional effect.

Another important aspect is the correla-tion between type and colour. Dependingon which colours you choose for the background and the text, the legibility ofthe text is good or poor. Simply put your perception to the test. Our examplehighlights the different effects.

Direct from the computer onto thefilm – innovative techniques aremaking vehicle design even moredynamic. Digital printing is one of these techniques. This systemis particularly effective in the production of photo-realisticdesigns. In combination with traditional refinishing techniques, absolutely stunning results can be created and executed to thevery highest standards.

Digital printing obviously offers manyadvantages, not only in terms of speed.Unlike other printing techniques it alsoobviates the need for complex processessuch as film exposure or the productionof printing plates. Production is a single, uninterrupted process from the computerto the printer. Needless to say, you havethe possibility to easily change the visualas desired and respond to customers’requests until right before the visual isactually printed. Printouts are availableon endless film which is suitable even for giant trucks. Nevertheless, digitalprinting alone is often insufficient forvehicle design. Custom refinishedvehicles usually require a combinationof different design techniques.

These include, for instance, traditionalrefinishing and airbrush for the back-ground, digital printing for the photo andfilm plotting for the letters – betweenthem, these techniques allow you to givefree rein to your creativity.

A light in the dark.Digital printing is possible on differentmaterials such as film, tarpaulins, PVC ortextile banners. Reflective film makes fora particularly attention-grabbing effect,as it makes the visual shine on the vehicleat night. This additional advertising effectwill certainly be very much appreciatedby your customers.

Computer-cut texts and logos havebecome integral elements of modernvehicle design. Modern cutting plotters produce the desired fontsand graphics from the data or papermodels with 100 percent precision –fast, flexibly and with remarkableversatility.

No matter whether you use opaque ortransparent, printed or coated filmmaterial, glass decor, special-effect orreflective film – innovative film cuttingtechnology offers virtually unlimitedpossibilities. The different techniques can also easily be varied; for instance, fine letters or textures can be cut outnegatively from the film, which is thenapplied to the vehicle and painted overthe traditional way.

Powerful equipment and know-how. With a high-performance film plotter, digital printer and airbrush know-howyou have everything you need to meetvirtually all customer requirements.

How to use transfers.

Vehicle design and film have beeninseparably linked for a long time. The advantage is plain to see: film iseasy to use, versatile and will evenforgive mistakes during application –if a surface doesn’t look as desired,it can easily be retouched or evenmoderately repaired at a later stage.

Applying adhesive film to the vehicle surface couldn’t be easier. In themeantime, new application possibilitieshave been developed, opening up additional, interesting design solutions.

After fine sanding, the wet visual including carrier paper is applied and aligned. After rubbing and wetting the carrier paper again,

the latter is shifted – not lifted – off. Carefully remove residual water and air inclusions by working your way from the centre to the edges without

applying pressure. Use hot water for more problematic shapes. After drying, carefully break off the edges. Subsequently apply 2 to 3 spray passes of clearcoat;

sand between the spray passes.

A fresh design from the water bath.

While automotive film for externaluse is available in a wide variety of different designs, film for use inthe interior is much harder to comeby. Especially three-dimensionalparts such as steering wheels orrims are difficult to decorate theconventional way.

Water transfer printing is the solution. Inthis case, a film is applied to the respectiveautomotive part in a water bath. Afterapprox. three minutes, the carrier materialreleases the ultra-thin film which thenfloats freely on the surface of the water. The vehicle part is then immersed into thebath where it is completely enveloped by the floating film. Paint residues are washed off in a subsequent specialbath; application of the clearcoat is the final step.

This coating technique allows you toembellish even highly complex shapes that used to be difficult or evenimpossible to process with conventionalprinting techniques.

It is good to know that the water transfertechnology is suitable for both metal and plastic surfaces. This means that youcannot only decorate your customers’cars but also their mobile phone holders, lamps, switches and sockets, sportsequipment and much more.
