Communications Technologies (WAN) -Type Description Pros Cons

GSM/GPRS/HSPDA

Use of GSM based technologies in metering is common. They use the ‘public’ communications 2G/3G network.

Availability & basic 2G Coverage is good.Typically supports IP connection and can do always on.

QoS is not typically guaranteed. Cells are limited on number of connections. Data rates are lower on 2G and setting up a connection can take 30 seconds or longer. Not good for broadcast

PLC Power Line Carrier uses the incoming electricity cable to transmit a carrier signal. FSK and OFDM are two of the main standards. More typical were Distribution Company owns the meter.

Secure connection to the meter. Can use existing wires infrastructure.Data concentrators can act as mini RTUs for smart grid.

No global standard Propriety protocols are common.low bandwidth. Takes time to collect data from each meterNot all technologies can penetrate the LV transformer.

Low power Radio / RF MESH

Licenced/unlicensed RF radio modems to a concentrator device.

RF networks (esp. MESH) for last mile communications. networks are cost effective in areas of high density.

Currently available unlicensed frequencies are limited output power and this can cause shadow areas. This solution is not good for rural areas where houses are spread out. Communications are disrupted by walls/obstacles.

IP / 4G WiMaxLTE

Broadband IP communication either via cable/

Fast communication, good for always on -Smart Grid applications. High bandwidth applications which can even deliver internet services.

Relies on always on secure infrastructure such as broadband or 4G network in place.
