Glossary of TermsElectric Service Entrance Equipment

Overhead service wire – the wire from the pole thatattaches to the house.

Service wire attachment – a metal plate or boltthat supports the service wire to the building. You may electto install a riser or roof plate to maintain minimum clearancesfor the service wire.

Service head – a weather-tight fitting attached to theend of the service run to prevent water from entering the pipe.

Service run – the wires installed between the servicehead and the meter fitting.

Meter – a device that measures the amount ofelectricity used by a customer.

Meter fitting – a device that the meter plugs into.

Service entrance – the wires installed between themeter fitting connection device and the disconnecting means.

Disconnecting means – the main breaker, fuse box orbreaker panel inside your home.

Water pipe ground – a safety connection to providean electrical path to ground.

Driven ground – a safety connection to provide anelectrical path to earth.

Items to consider

� If your trenching route hasto be dug by hand, or if a cablemust be installed under apaved surface, additionalcharges apply.

� If your service cable has tobe moved later to make roomfor a new swimming pool,patio, deck, etc., new chargesapply. Plan ahead!

�Underground cable will beburied only in a ComEdeasement or in the propertythat it serves. Additionalcharges apply if your secondary service cable routeis longer than 100feet.

�To avoid additional ComEdcharges - a customer can per-form the following: can digtheir own trench, can installtheir own cable per municipal-ity requirements - note thecustomer will then own andmaintain the cable, can com-plete their own boring workper municipality require-ments, and can dig their ownsplice pits.

�There will be charges fromComEd if you convert fromoverhead to undergroundservice.

�You are responsible formaking or exposing under-ground sprinkler systems,private wiring, sewers, draintiles, etc.

�The trench route mustbe within 4 inches of finalgrade and clear of all obsta-cles (sheds, swing sets,tree stumps, landscaping,fencing, etc.).

�Generally, restoration oflandscaping is the customer’sresponsibility.

�Conduit may be requiredunder roads/pavement or bythe municipality.
