Annual Review2013-2014
Our Traditionof Giving. . .
Sacred Heart Parish & School
Community . . .Webster’s Dictionary defines community as “a unified body of
individuals.” As we come together to review the health of our
parish and school, we also want to take a moment to thank
all of the individuals that gave their time, talent and treasure
to ensure the longevity of our community. It is only through
working as a unified body that we can strengthen our Sacred
Heart community. Thank you.
As we approach our time for renewal of treasureas a parish dedicated to Stewardship as a Way of Life, I am glad to share with you this AnnualReport of our Parish and Parish School.
Father Steve Salis
This past February our school participated in our accreditation review by a visiting team of principalsand teachers through the Western Catholic Educational Association. This visit was the culminationof more than two years of work by our school community to assess the academic programs and cur-riculum and faith formation provided to our students. I am pleased to announce that in recognitionof our work here at Sacred Heart School we received the highest term of accreditation (6 years). The entire self-study and visiting committee reports can be found on the school’s website.
Our academic programs continued to expand this year. Spanish language instruction is now beingoffered in every grade, starting in pre-kindergarten (taught by our pre-kindergarten aide, AuroraPaz). We also added an Academic Resource Class (under the direction of Rosemarie Engman) toour middle school this year to provide academic and organizational/study skills support for smallgroups of students (a maximum of eight per class). Candidates for the ARC program are identifiedeither by their teachers or parents. In some cases the program has already allowed some students toenroll or remain enrolled here who otherwise would not have been able to access the curriculumand remain here in our school community.
In June we said farewell to one of our 5th Grade teachers, Carl Sheffield. Mr. Sheffield had taughthere for 35 years, with more than 48 years of service in Catholic education! Among many otherthings, Mr. Sheffield was the director of our annual Passion play on Good Friday. He has promisedto help ease the transition by coming back to help us present the play this next year. Our school library was renamed this fall in his honor - The Carlton Sheffield Library.
On behalf of the entire school community I thank you for your ongoing prayers and financial support for Sacred Heart School!
Sincerely,
David Burroughs
With God’s blessings and your support, SacredHeart School continues to thrive. At a time whenmany other Catholic schools around the countryare struggling with enrollment, we were blessedwith strong enrollment (415 students in pre-kthrough 8th grade).
David Burroughs
As you will see when you read the financial information, both our parish and our parish schoolfinished the last fiscal year (July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014) in the positive with some to spare. This was due to wise management of our resources and the generosity of many parishioners whocontributed to the parish as well as the school families who support their children in pursuing aCatholic education.
As you will also see, our parish and parish school are involved in many activities that reach far beyond the confines of our parish boundaries. We have parishioners and school families who come from Bothell, Issaquah, Redmond, Kirkland, as well as the many communities that make up Bellevue. We see that our responsibility as parishioners at Sacred Heart and as disciples of Jesus Christ require us not only to be good stewards for the resources for our parish but that wemust reach out to help others. There are many ways we have fulfilled that such as the Advent GivingTree, contributing shoes to children for Christmas, and taking up collections that support peoplenot only locally but throughout the world.
As we take this time to be grateful for the successes of this past year, we need to look to this presentyear and beyond. We need every household in our parish to see Stewardship as a Way of Life whichincludes making a commitment to stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. I am asking everyhousehold in our parish to take some time to reflect and pray on the many gifts that God has beengenerous in bestowing upon you and seeing what portion of time, talent, and treasure will be sharedwith our parish in the coming year. In order for our parish to accomplish everything we hope toaccomplish, we need every household to be conscientious givers.
Finally, I want to thank you for all you do to contribute to the mission of our parish and parishschool. I also want to acknowledge the dedication of our parish and parish school staffs who workhard to use the resources you entrust them with. I especially want to acknowledge and thank TheresaDaigle, Sacred Heart Parish School Development Director, and John Meyer, Pastoral Assistant forAdministration, for leading the process that produced this report.
Let us continue to work together to build up the Kingdom of God here at Sacred Heart Parish and School,

A Fundraising Year in Review
This past year, Sacred Heart School had many occasions to expand our fundraising and developmentinto new areas. We saw the use of technology increase our efforts in both the auction (with the introduction of mobile bidding) as well as Jogathon (using on-line pledging). Our community embraced this new technology, and showed their support in meaningful ways.
The annual Gala Auction took place on February 8, 2014. The theme, “A Black and White Affair”provided an opportunity to enjoy an elegant, fun evening. Through the generosity of our community,we raised money for the school today as well as securing the legacy of the school through Fund-A-Need. Fund-A-Need secured over $56,000 toward the Endowment that evening. Thank you to ourmany sponsors, volunteers and those who attended and supported the event.
We had many reasons to celebrate throughout the year due to the generosity of our parents, grandparents, alumni and parish community. With a vibrant volunteer community and outstandingleadership, we continue to work toward keeping Sacred Heart School at the forefront of educationtoday and for years to come.
