“Not as man sees does God see, because man sees
the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.”
I Samuel 16:7
How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in creating an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home,
career, possessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions
of greatness will impress God. Instead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time,
talents and treasure here on earth.

A letter from our Pastor
My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today we step out of the Ordinary Sundays in the “A” cycle of readings. We celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration when Jesus took Peter, James and John up the mountain to pray. While they were with Jesus they were privileged to share in an incredible experience: Jesus is transformed before their eyes and can be seen conversing with Moses and Elijah, who represent the law and the “prophets” of the People of Israel. Ever the impetuous one, Peter begins to speak to the Lord. He wants to memorialize the moment. His words are cut off by God the Father who proclaims from the heavens: “This is my Son…Listen to him!” The three special disciples were awed as they experienced this encounter with Jesus. The reading says that they prostrated themselves in fear before this encounter with God. Jesus tells them to get up---the encounter is over. Jesus further charges them to keep this experience to themselves---“tell no one!” We enter into this experience of transfiguration today, two thousand years later. I think that for us, the powerful exclamation of the Father is central as we seek to integrate our faith life into our live in the modern secular world. “This is my Son…listen to him!” Just as it was with those three favored disciples, so it is with us. They experienced the Lord for a moment in his radiant glory---they witnessed the truth of Jesus as Son of God! All these years later, we also experience the truth of the divine Son, Jesus Christ, regularly in Holy Eucharist. As just as with the Apostles, so with us; we are called upon to enter into life with the Lord---and more than anything else, to “Listen to him!” Let us together go forth today from this place which is made holy by the actions that take place on this altar, and let us really seek to listen to the word of God as it stirs in our hearts and souls. The Lord is truly present to us always, and the Father calls to us to listen to his Son each and every day. My brothers and sisters, this week we experience change at our parish. We sadly said “good-bye and God-speed” to Father Mark Kehoe who has served so faithfully here since November 1, 2014. We are also fortunate to have the opportunity to welcome Father Lancelot McGrath who is now serving the People of God in our parish. Our Parish will invite Father Mark back in September so we can offer him a proper OLMV farewell. More information about that in a few weeks!!! We will miss Father Mark’s “short” but powerful homilies and his infectious humor. But, we will come to love Father Lancelot as he begins his ministry here. We also had the opportunity to Meet Fr. Mark Odoi from the Archdiocese of Tororo last weekend. Each year our diocese asks each parish to invite a speaker from one of the many missionary dioceses throughout the world. Father Mark is a teacher in the high school seminary sponsored by his Archdiocese, and his bishop asked him to spend the summer months in missionary service, travelling around the United States and Canada. What a wonderful priest! It was a grace to have him at our parish and at the rectory. Thanks for welcoming him so warmly.
In peace and prayer, Father Pat.
BACK TO SCHOOL COLLECTION August 12-13, 2017
The items are the usual things children need going back to such such as pens, pencils, backpacks, notebooks, markers or crayons and all of the other items you will see on sale in the coming weeks. This collection is a great help to the families living in the Ozanam Shelter of Catholic Charities, where every penny counts as parents work toward the day they will have their own place to live. A number of other organizations benefit from this collection such as HIPHOP's Annual Youth Health and Science Day Summer Program, HUB Teen Center/New Brunswick, Eric B. Chandler Heath Center/Social Services and many other organizations. Please contribute to this project if you can. Thank you.

ADULT CONFIRMATION PROGRAM...We invite our parishioners not to MISS THE CHANCE TO GROW IN OUR FAITH! If you or someone you know is over 18 years of age and have celebrated Baptism and Communion, but have not yet been confirmed, this program is specially DESIGNED FOR YOU! The 10 session program is offered annually to help candidates deepen their understanding and commitment to Jesus and to learn more about the Catholic faith. A FEW NOTES FROM OUR PASTOR, FATHER PAT: Bishop's Annual Appeal: Our Lady of Mount Virgin Parish is one of the few parishes in our diocese that has not yet reached our Bishop's Appeal goal. We are less than $5,000.00 away from reaching our goal and showing Bishop Checchio that we support his efforts in leading our diocese and in proclaiming Christ to the people. While the Appeal is now over, it is still not too late to send in your donation. Forms are available at the rear of the Church. Won't you stand forth with Bishop Checchio and become a partner with him in proclaiming the truth of Christ present right here in Central New Jersey. Annual Sheriff's Civilian Academy: The Sheriff's Office will hold an 8-week Sheriff's civilian Academy for residents of Middlesex County in the fall. Applications are not being accepted for the program which will take place at Middlesex County Police Training Center in Edison. The first session is on September 21st from 7 - 9pm. Remaining sessions will be held weekly on Thursdays and there will be one Sunday class. Applications must be in by August 14. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and reside in Middlesex. Contact Officer Frank Sautner at 732-745-5909 or e-mail: [email protected]. OLMV Pastoral Council: Our Pastoral Council met with Father Pat last Saturday. Among the items for discussion were the upcoming Borough of Middlesex "Community Day" (August 19), a review of the 2016/2017 financial statement that will be submitted to the diocese, the need for a Census to update our parishioner files, the need to expand the parish use of technology, the need to upgrade our air conditioning system and also to replace the floor covering in the church. As OLMV continues to experience deficits, the parish must also plan for an "increased offering campaign" in the coming months. New Families and Registration: Our Lady of Mount Virgin Parish welcomes new members to our community. Families who have recently moved into our community are welcome. New families and also children who are 18 years of age and older are invited to register as parishioners. Registration is important as it is not possible for the parish to issue letters of eligibility to serve as a godparent or sponsor to persons who are not registered and active members of our parish. It is expected that a person will be registered and active in the parish for at least three months before requesting a letter of sacramental eligibility. An active parishioner attends Mass regularly, supports the parish financially and participates in the life of the parish.

Is it time for a change? Walking Toward Eternity is an inspiring series designed to help you live your faith more fully by developing and nurturing characteristics that are essential to the Christian life. Through daily prayer and meditation with Scripture, you will be drawn into an intimate and life-changing encounter with Christ. As you prayerfully reflect on God’s Word, you will begin to hear the subtle ways God is speaking to you, and you will be challenged to set aside those things in your life (this is Part II of the program) that keep you from growing closer to Him. By putting the fruits of your study into practice, you will be able to make real changes in your life, changes that will make you like the person God created you to be. (It is not necessary to have participated in Part I to attend this program).
Join us for Walking Toward Eternity (Part II) at OLMV in Middlesex beginning September 13th
at 10:00 A.M. or 7:00 P.M. and continuing for 7 weeks at Petra House.
Visit the Parish Office to register (plus $16 book fee) by September 1.
