OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Dear My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pax Vobis! It’s Summer – beaches and pools are opening up; when the sun goes down at night, we don’t need to go in and put on a sweater; you’ll proba-bly be seeing now-Fr. Jae and I sitting out more on our Fremont-side front lawn! I love the Summer! Whenever there’s a delight in my life, I like to call upon the Saints to ensure that I enjoy those de-lights to the fullest! There’s St. Lawrence – patron of BBQs; there’s St. Barbara – patroness of fireworks; there’s St. Eugene de Mazenod – patron of family re-unions (actually, he’s the patron of dysfunctional fami-lies, but in the end, are those two really opposed?)! It seems like we have patrons for anything and every-thing! However, I couldn’t find a patron of Summer it-self! This past Wednesday (June 24) we celebrated the Birthday of St. John the Baptist, which happens to coincide around the time of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year with the most hours of sunlight. This means that if the summer solstice is the longest day of the year, then every day after that has less and less hours of sunlight. This also means that if after June 24 the days get shorter and shorter, then about 6 months later, we will hit the day with the least amount of sunlight on the winter solstice, which is always the date December 25, and I think every child knows very well Whose Birthday that is! Every day after the winter solstice, the hours of sunlight starts increasing every day after that. Hence, the Scripture passage quoting St. John the Baptist: “I must decrease and He must in-crease” (John 3:30). St. John the Baptist was the great prophet who pointed towards Christ and not towards himself. St. John the Baptist paved the way of the Lord, and then when the Lord entered the picture, St. John the Baptist humbly stepped out of the way. Christ is “the light of the world” (John 8:12). Brothers and Sisters in Christ, we are called to decrease, to decrease in worldly possessions, to grow in humility and love, to offer everything we have and offer up to our Heavenly Father – and in so doing, Christ will grow within us! Christ will take over our lives! Christ will live in and through us so that His Light can penetrate the darkness pervading our world and bring about the salvation of the world! Thank you to the OLM Parish Community for another successful ‘Drive-In’ Food Drive held on Saturday, June 20
th, supporting the Tri Boro Food Pantry. We
collected several carloads of Lunch Food items and $670.00 in cash, checks and gift cards.
We could not have done it without our Volunteers who performed various tasks including setting up the event, retrieving the donations, writing expiration dates on each item, packing and delivering the donations. We did it while maintaining social distancing so you could safely drop off your donations. A “Big” Thank You to: Julien Roche, Nadyne Roche, Gianluca Tredici, Jenn Kavanagh, Nora Kavanagh, Peter Gordinier, Will Gordinier and Bob Behr. And a special thanks to the OLM Staff: John Rokoszak, Maria Kistler, Maureen Giaccio and Linda Priore for their organizational skills and advertising of the Food Drive.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion
Dear Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eu-
charist. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive your Body and Blood.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into
my heart. Stay close to me, Jesus, so that I may be close to all our sisters and brothers,
especially those who are most in need of your loving care. Amen.
A TIME FOR PRAYER
Summer Prayer
As we begin the summer months, gracious and loving Jesus,
remind us of Your every present guidance and love.
Give us confidence in Your presence, remembering all that we have and let us live it
in our summer experiences.
As we work, play and enjoy our family and friends this summer, may we feel Your love within us,
guiding us toward all that is right and just.
Let us be grateful for the gift of summer, Jesus. Allow us to enjoy it safely and remind us daily of
Your love for us.
Amen.
GUIDELINES WHEN ATTENDING MASS Due to COVID-19, we must limit the amount of parishioners in the church at one time. In order for us to open safely we must follow specific guidelines.
When you arrive, please check in with a staff member by the entrance to the Gathering Space doors facing the school. All other doors will be locked.
Please be early. Once Mass begins, the Gathering Space doors will be locked.
Social Distancing will be practiced. Expect that pews will be taped off, and households (even of one individual) are asked to keep six feet of separation from each other.
Masks must be worn for the duration of the Mass except for the brief moment when receiving Holy Communion, which will be distributed in the hand only.
We recommend that you bring your own hand sanitizer should you need it during Mass.
For your safety our church is cleaned and disinfected after every use, but no one should expect that they will be any safer from germs than in other public places.
There will be one single occupancy bathroom available for use located off the Gathering Space behind the Sacristy.
Each person must meet the health requirements for attending Church Liturgies (temperature 100.3˚F or below, no cough, no shortness of breath / breathing difficulty, no headache, no body aches, no recent loss of taste or smell, no sore throat, no recent contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19).

Over the past three years, many parishioners have discovered our parish courtyard/garden. Nestled between the back of the gather-ing space and our Parish Center, it provides a quiet place to pray, take family photos after Baptisms, First Communions, Confirma-tions, weddings, not to mention a convenient cut through to church, from parts of the parking lot. It is where we gather to light the “new fire” for the Easter Vigil, and celebrate an outdoor mass before our parish picnic.
This past fall, it’s most frequent visitor was Msgr. Turro. Accompa-nied by a caregiver, or Kathy McCabe, Msgr. was able to walk to and from the courtyard, enjoy the beautiful plants and solitude, on-ly happily interrupted on “Tuesday” afternoons, where he met with the 2
nd graders from OLMA, who joined him in saying the Ro-
sary. It was late fall when we sadly discovered, the 3 trees origi-nally planted to provide shade, were infected with a blight. In spite
of the best efforts of parishioner, Bill Koenig, a landscape architect and designer of the courtyard, and Pete Jacobson whose landscape company installed the courtyard/garden, the trees did not sur-vive the winter. Over the last few weeks of Lent, a plan to replace the trees came together. Through the generosity of Bill and Marlene Koenig, Pete Jacobsen and his landscape company, and recent gifts to the OLM Courtyard/ garden fund, from Marianne Coche in memory of her husband, Walter, and Peter and Kathy Bowen in honor of their grandson Jared, the trees have been replaced. We also wish to acknowledge the original donors of the trees, the Jordan and Ballanco families, the Lange family, and an anonymous donor who planted a tree to honor Msgr. Turro for 65 plus years of priestly care to our parish. In the midst of the darkness Covid -19 has cast over the entire earth, signs of new life and the prom-ised hope of Resurrection are manifesting themselves too, even in our courtyard/garden! We hope that when we are able to come together again as a faith community, we will be able to share with a renewed sense the intention of our courtyard/garden; a place to gather, pray and reflect on the collective experiences these painful and difficult times have brought to so many in varied ways. As people of faith, we are mindful that the agony and despair experienced by our Lord in the garden of Gethsemane, is transformed for all eternity in another gardens’ empty tomb, Easter morning. “Jesus’ hope is different. He plants in our hearts, the conviction that God is able to make eve-rything work unto good, because even from the grave He brings life”.
