Dear Family,

A philosopher once said that when one becomes truly wise it is not because he/she has gained any answers, but instead because they are finally
asking the right questions. As the Pharisees try to capture Jesus tightly in a catch22 situation by their questions about paying tax, we see their
deceit (and their own lack of conviction) in forcing him to “take a side.” If He simply were to say, “Pay the tax,” then they could accuse him of
siding with the oppressive Roman government. If he were to advise them to ignore the governmentimposed obligations, then they could call
him an anarchist and tip off the authorities. In their mind’s truth was out the window as all that mattered was Jesus’ demise. Our Lord
decides not to fall into their trap by acknowledging that following God does not negate our being law abiding citizens per se and that we all end
up giving to God the greater debt of our lives, He whose image we bear on our souls. In few words, as is his way, Jesus teaches us so much by
His reply, but perhaps the greatest lesson for our day and age gleaned here is that taking sides is not the place of a Christian, at least not where
there’s an agenda. Certainly, we are called to stand up for what is just in light of the Gospel and to do so without reservation or prejudice. The
problem with asking too simple of a question is that it leaves no room for growth, understanding, and can easily leave people unnecessarily at
odds with one another. We must ask better questions, not seeking to place ourselves in simplistic categories or size up people in narrow ways.
In many instances, being a good example of our Faith will leave us finding many secular categories ill fitting. The only way the Gospel is
shared, that God’s truth is sought, and that we are open to dialogue (even with those who may disagree with us), is to ask, “Where is God
leading me?”
