CHOICE "If you choose you can keep the commandments," Sirach tells us. God "has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand" (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today's reading from Matthew's Gospel, Jesus re-minds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the com-mandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Copyright (c) J. S. Blessing of Unborn Children The church welcomes with joy and compassion the mothers who, recognizing that all life is a gift from God, come to the Church seeking a blessing for their unborn child. Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on March 11/12.
House Blessings Parishioners may request a house blessing by contacting the parish office, 702-459-7778. You will be contacted by Deacon John or Deacon Dan.

Cheers, what a difference a week makes! In last week’s column, I listed the different sub-contractors that we might need for our new church construction. I was thinking that we might be near reaching our “Church-a-thon” goal of $800,000 – the money left to raise after
receiving that major gift of $500,000! I wanted to shoot for the end of the year (December 31, 2016), but thought that that was too short a time to raise so much money: so I challenged myself to get that money by the last day of January 2017. And I figured it wasn’t too early to be talking about sub–contractors.
Two weeks ago (Sunday, January 29, 2016), we hadn’t yet reached goal; but remember that I had until Tuesday, January 31, to do so. On the morning of Tuesday, January 31, 2017, we still needed $250,000. About mid-morning, I received a text telling me that the “check was in the mail” literally. The donor is a good friend and reliable, so I knew it was going to happen, but I didn’t know how much the check was written for. The check DID INDEED arrive: $100,000! So now I needed $150,000 more.
That afternoon, I attended the wake service for Fr. Leo at Christ the King. As I knelt before Leo’s casket, I asked Leo to help me get that last amount of money ASAP (maybe by the end of the day – the last day of January which goal-date I had given myself). I got a phone call in my car on the way home (time about 8:00 p.m. – Tuesday, January 31, 2017) and this friend said he was ready to make a gift of “six figures”) to the Church. I didn’t get the exact number, however. As I was calling a member of our Parish Finance Committee to tell the good news, I “pocket-dialed” the donor of “six figures; when I apologized for the “pocket dial”, the donor said that he forgot to ask how much I needed. When I said that I needed $150,000 more, he said “It’s done!” (Is this Fr. Leo’s “first miracle”?)
So, we have reached goal! A lot of work must be done to actually begin construction, but what an accomplishment for us! There will be lots and lots more to discuss in the weeks and months ahead; but for now let’s all be grateful to God and to our generous parishioners and benefactors who have made this possible.
Finally, I’m recovering well from the fall off the ladder; thanks for your prayers and cards. Love to all,

NEW BEGINNINGS
A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation
New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. • HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ’s saving death and resurrection.
Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778 • HEALING Grief Facilitation -“Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled” (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778 • CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved -“If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member” (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ’s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support.
