CREDIT PROBLEMS?new year, the topline LTZ will be avail-able with a four-cylinder engine inaddition to the six-speed automaticmaking that’s a first in the mid-sizesegment and something long-distancecommuters should love because itcombines all the amenities of a luxurycar with frugal gas consumption.

The new Malibu uses the sameworld platform and suspension setupas the Saturn Aura; the same car wasnamed North American Car of the Yearat the Detroit auto show. Derived fromGM’s Opel Division in Germany, thiscar has the same taut ride and positivehandling that one expects fromGerman sports sedans.

Visually, the new Malibu looks moresubstantial than the previous modelwith the Chevy bowtie logo integratednicely into the new “family” one-bargrille. Interestingly, there are no lessthan 12 bowties on the exterior, someobvious, others small and discreet likeon the headlight bulb reflectors.

In terms of everyday ride, it is anight and day improvement over theprevious model. I mean here is aMalibu that likes to be put through itspaces and I did on California’s PacificCoast Highway with its endless twistsand turns and breathtaking scenery.

With the longer and wider wheel-base on California superhighways thatare up to six lanes wide with surfacesvarying from billiard table to potholecity, the Malibu soaked up everything itcame across.

The interior of the Malibu, especial-ly the LTZ with its wood trim accents,is a very pleasant place to be and awhole lot more inviting that the rentalcar look of the previous model. Theinstrument panel (IP) gives a hint of itsEuropean heritage due to its Opel DNA,but is not as “Euro” as the IP in theSaturn Astra I drove during the sameevent.

I also briefly drove the hybrid that isa “mild” hybrid in that it can’t run onbattery power alone. But GM figuresthat in urban use, the hybrid is goodfor an up to 20 per cent improvementin mileage because it turns itself offwhen stopped.

A “full” hybrid does get 50 per centand better fuel economy but is about$5,000-$8,000 more expensive. Onehas to decide if he/she will save morethan the purchase price over the life ofhis/her full hybrid.

The only difference I could find interms of ride and handling between thehybrid and the stock four-cylinder LSwas getting used to the engine stop-ping at rest and coming back to lifewhen the brake was released.

As always, a day with the car is not areal road test, so I will book the carearly next year and get some seriousseat time.

But for now, the Malibu has gonefrom a follower to a leader in the mid-size sedan.

The 2008 Malibu will be offered infour models with three engines. Thebase Malibu LS has a starting price of$22,995. The LT package begins at$24,895 and the top of the line LTZthat comes in at $33,610. In addition,the Malibu Hybrid model at $26,995 isthe most affordable hybrid system onthe market.

Malibu offers two punchy yet fuel-efficient dual overhead cam engines,including a standard 169 hp (160 lb/ftof torque) 2.4-litre Ecotec DOHC four-

cylinder engine that delivers 9.6L/100km in the city and 6.5L/100 km on thehighway. The topline engine is a 252hp (251 lb/ft)) 3.6-litre DOHC V6 withvariable valve timing that delivers12.2L/100 km in the city and 7.8 L/100on the highway. The Malibu Hybridmodel is powered by a 2.4-litre Ecotecengine/electric motor (164 hp, 159lb/ft) and achieves 8.5L/100km in thecity and 6.2L/100 on the highway.
