Aeria l Opera tio ns

Aeria l opera tions will be ma na ged by tra ined a nd competent personnel. T his includes directing a eria l bombing a nd a eria l ignition opera tions

T he use of bombing a ircra ft without the support of ground ba sed suppression crews should be limited to very specific circumsta nces.

All a eria l ignition opera tions require the consent of the NPW S Bra nch Director or the Section 44 Appointee.

Ba c kb urning

All personnel must be fully briefed before ba ck burning opera tions begin. Ba ckburning in a rea s of L ow – Modera te OFH will require the use of wind, or low humidity to

for ba ckburning ma y require “wind-rowing” Broombush on the edge of conta inment lines to a ssist light-up during low wind conditions.

Co m m a nd & Co ntro l

T he first comba ta nt a gency on site ma y a ssume control of the fire, but then must ensure the releva nt la nd ma na gement a gency is notified promptly.

On the a rriva l of other comba ta nt a gencies, the initia l Incident Controller will lia ise with the RFS to ensure tha t the a gency in comma nd is determined a nd a n Incident Controller is a ppointed.

Co nta inm ent Lines

New conta inment lines require the prior consent of a senior NPW S officer. Construction of new conta inment lines should be a voided, where pra ctica ble, except where they ca n

be constructed with minima l environmenta l impa ct. All persona l involved in conta inment line construction should be briefed on, a nd must consider both

the incident.

Ea rthm o ving Equipm ent

Pla nt ma y only be used with the prior consent of a senior NPW S/AW C Officer. Pla nt must a lwa ys be guided a nd supervised by a n experienced officer, a nd a ccompa nied by a

support vehicle (NPW S/AW C). W hen enga ged in direct or pa ra llel a tta ck, this vehicle must be a fire fighting vehicle.

M a c hinery sho uld b e exc lud ed fro m Briga lo w wo o d la nd a nd Gilga i Ta nkla nd s. Conta inment lines running a long va lley a rea s should be constructed 20-50 metres from the gully line

NPW S esta te. Fire Suppressio n Chem ic a ls

T he use of foa m, wetting a gents a nd reta rda nts will NOT be permitted within 50 metres of da ms a nd wa tercourses holding wa ter or the AW C opera tions ba se.

T he a eria l use of foa m, gels a nd reta rda nts should be a pproved by the Bra nch Director or delega te. T he use of reta rda nts requires the a pprova l of the Bra nch Director or delega te

Reha b ilita tio n W here pra ctica ble, conta inment lines should be sta bilised a nd reha bilita ted a s pa rt of the wildfire suppression opera tion.
