Principal’s Message ANZAC Commemoration

On Tuesday, our school showed respect to our ANZACs in another beautiful ceremony,

commemorating this important occasion. Our student leaders did an amazing job of leading

this ceremony. I experienced such a sense of pride and emotion as I saw the enormous

respect and reverence shown by our students, from Year 3 through to Year 6. The spirit of

Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and

relevance for our sense of national identity. A special thanks to our visitor, Mr Gary Gibson

(Redbank Plains RSL Sub Branch) for his very informative speech. Thanks also, to Mrs

Glenys Harrington for the important work she does in developing our student leaders; to Mrs

Claire Hornagold, Mrs Katie Macey and our choir for their beautiful choral tribute to our

ANZACs; and to Mr Scott Bignell for the playing of the Last Post and Reveille.

On Wednesday, 25 April 2018, the four school captains, Lelena Elphinstone, Ella Horner,

Charlie Hughes and Zachary Mozes, and I marched for the first time at the Redbank Plains

RSL Sub Branch ANZAC ceremony. It was a very proud moment for their parents and myself.

‘We acknowledge the Yuggera Language people sub-groups, Jagera, Ugarapul and Daranbirrin, the traditional custodians of this land on which we work, travel and live. We pay our respects to the Elders,

both past, present and future, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Indigenous Australians.’

HAVE YOUR SAY ON CYBERBULLYING

Many parents and teachers are concerned about cyberbullying. It is a serious problem that can hurt young people, families

and school communities. Cyberbullying is also a complex problem that is often invisible to parents and teachers.

In February the Premier appointed a group of Queenslanders who are passionate about stopping cyberbullying of young

people. The Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce is chaired by well-known author and commentator, Madonna King,

and includes members with knowledge and expertise in education, youth health and wellbeing, law, Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander communities, disability and families.

The Taskforce needs your help to develop a framework for Queensland to help reduce cyberbullying of young people. They

want to hear from parents, carers, students, teachers and other experts in schools. In particular, the Taskforce wants to

hear about your ideas to:

• prevent or reduce cyberbullying

• support people affected by cyberbullying of young people.

How to have your say

• Email the Taskforce at [email protected]

• Upload your ideas as a submission on the Taskforce website https://qld.gov.au/cyberbullyingtaskforce

• Attend a public forum in 12 Queensland locations including Brisbane, Cairns, Rockhampton and Charleville. For

information about forums visit https://qld.gov.au/cyberbullyingtaskforce

Everyone can be part of the stand against cyberbullying. Ms King and the Taskforce members look forward to hearing from

you.

NAPLAN TESTS — 15 to 17 MAY

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in NAPLAN testing from 15 to 17 May, with a catch-up day on Monday 20 May.

The tests are:

Language Conventions will be tested on the Tuesday. (Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation) tests, followed

C O L L I N G W O O D P A R K S T A T E S C H O O L P A G E 3

later in the day by a Writing test. Here students will be called upon to write either a Narrative or Persuasive piece

on a given stimulus. The test last for around 40 minutes with about 15 minutes to prepare the children and the

papers.

On Wednesday, students will sit the Reading tests. They will be given a reading magazine comprised of 6 different

readings and a test booklet with detailed comprehension questions about each text that they read. Most answers

are multiple choice where students choose the best answer and colour a bubble to show the choice. There are

some questions that require a short written response.

On Thursday they will complete the Numeracy tests. These test all aspects of the Mathematics curriculum

including Number, Space, Chance, Data, Geometry, Problem solving.

This term teachers are preparing students for these tests to alleviate any stress or concern they may have about these

different style of tests. NAPLAN tests give our students the opportunity to do their best independently and demonstrate their

knowledge and understanding. While providing us with valuable information, they are a point in time test.

They do not show ……..

If students are absent for any of these days, arrangements can be made to sit the tests at another time in the week, though

students cannot sit the tests after Monday 20th May (normally the last day to catch up would be Friday 18 May, but we have

special permission to extend as Friday 18 May is the Ipswich Show Holiday). The papers are collected and sent away for

marking.

If you have any queries regarding NAPLAN testing, please contact me on 3381 4333.

NAPLAN test results will be released later this year. Visit www.nap.edu.au for more information.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED!

During the holidays, I know sometimes reading gets dropped off the daily routine as children are busy doing other activities

and enjoying their holiday time. Reading is a great habit to develop but it is also meant to be an enjoyable activity. Children

are never too old to have their parents read to them!

Children learn so much from the reading habits that parents model to them. If children see their parents reading for

enjoyment they are more likely to read for enjoyment as well. Remember that reading doesn’t always have to be a thick

book. It could be a newspaper article, a magazine, signs you pass while on a bushwalk, reading novels on an iPad and even

recipes.

“If parents simply read for pleasure at home on their own, their children were more likely to enjoy reading, too. That pattern

held fast across very different countries and different levels of family income. Kids could see what parents valued, and it

mattered more than what parents said.”

― Amanda Ripley, The Smartest Kids in the World: And How They Got That Way

Cooler Weather is Here - Nearly!

I have just been in the playground and am delighted by seeing all children, with the exception of a few, wearing the correct

uniform including school coloured jumpers. With cooler weather creeping up on us, help us maintain our high standard of

school pride, by making sure your child has the correct uniform including a navy blue or maroon jacket or jumper. Be sure to

organise the correct winter uniform for your child. Coloured jumpers/jackets and tights are unacceptable.

STEM Challenge Afternoons “STEM” (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) has been a globally used

term for more than a decade and it seems that STEM related stories are in the news on a

daily basis.

The Department of Education outlines its plans for “Schools of the Future” which states

that: “We must inspire our students to be curious, problem solvers, creative thinkers and the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.”

In response to this challenge, and building on the success of the STEAM afternoons last year, STEM Challenge afternoons

for Year 5 and 6 begin again this term, providing extension and enrichment opportunities to students who will work on STEM

–related projects or programs. STEM Challenge afternoons will happen on the Fridays in Term 2 and Term 3 when Gala

Sport does not take place. This will give students 11 STEM Challenge afternoons – plenty of time to get their teeth into some

exciting projects and competitions.

The options include:

Kids’ STEM Convention

This award winning program will see students attend the University of Queensland at the beginning of Term 3 for an

inspiring conference, come back to school to work on extended investigations and then present their work at a

celebratory forum at the Queensland Academy of Science, Maths and Technology at the end of Term 3.

Code Club

This option will help students to develop their coding skills with the opportunity to enter the Queensland Premier’s

“Creating Queensland’s Future” coding competition.

Robotics

Students will learn to code robots with the opportunity to compete in the “First Lego League” – pitching their robots

against others to complete a series of challenges.

Cardboard Challenge

Inspired by the global inspiration of “Caine’s Arcade” http://cainesarcade.com/ students will plan and create using

cardboard.

Kidpreneur Slime

Students will apply scientific methodology to create the best kind of slime before learning and applying

entrepreneurial skills to market and sell their product.

OPTI-Minds Challenge

Students will learn to think outside the box as they come up with solutions for a range of problems and present their

solutions in creative performances. Students will have the opportunity to compete in the Regional Opti-MINDS

Challenge.

Make With Mum

A STEM opportunity for younger students is fast approaching! To coincide with Mother’s Day, a “Make with Mum” session

will take place after school on Thursday 10th May. Students will be invited to bring along their Mum (or other carer) to enjoy a

story and then make something together inspired by what they have heard. In order for us to plan and prepare resources,

this will be a pre-booked session only with capped numbers, so please look out for a flyer coming home next week and keep

watching our Facebook page for further information.

Volunteer Induction

We are lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers working at our school. I have been

approached by new parents who would love to come to help in classrooms and so I will be

running another Volunteer Induction session: Friday 11th May, 9.00 in the Seminar

Rooms at the back of the Library. Please contact me to let me know if are planning to

attend.

Eco-Warriors

One of our wonderful volunteers, Mrs Cathy Turrall, has set up an “Eco-Warriors” lunch time club and would like to establish

some compost bins around the school for students to put their fruit, vegetable, tissue and paper scraps into.

With this in mind, we are wondering if anyone in the community has any compost bins or rubbish bins with lids that could be

donated. Cathy is happy to pick up any donated bins and bring them to school.

If you can help, please contact Mrs Rutland via the school office.

The Camp Quality puppet show visited our school on Tuesday 24th April 2018. The show answered

difficult questions that kids have about cancer, dispelled common myths and taught students how to

be supportive and understanding of kids living with cancer – all of which prevents bullying and

exclusion!

Measles Health Alert

Several cases of Measles have been reported over the last few weeks. Measles is a highly infectious disease with symptoms including high temperature, lethargy, cough and red eyes. These symptoms are commonly followed by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face which becomes widespread over the body. If you think you or your child may have measles you should call ahead to your GP or hospital, to ensure processes are in place to prevent the further spread of the disease. Children with measles should not attend school until advised by your health practi-tioner.
