COMMENTS FROM
THE PRINCIPAL I want to say THANK
YOU to the Sargent commu-
nity for your support! Get-
ting the school year started
keeps things busy, but with
the support from many of
you I believe this year is off
to a good start.
Our staff, students, and
teams/groups are very active:
The FFA has been working
hard on range judging and,
with the help of several com-
munity members, Mr.
Kozeal successfully hosted
the district range judging
contest. The FFA will com-
pete at the area and state
contests as well, but hosting
districts allowed more of our
students to participate, and
many of our students/teams
finished at the top of their
division. The student council
has been planning the home-
coming events for the week
of October 10th. The cross
country, football, and volley-
ball teams have all shown
improvement and are gaining
momentum with the success-
es they have achieved. The
FBLA has also been prepar-
ing for upcoming activities
and some of the students
were able to attend a leader-
ship conference in Septem-
ber.
Our academic programs
also show results that we
can be proud of. Our Junior
and Senior High School Ne-
braska State Assessment
scores from last spring were
very good with many stu-
dents exceeding the State
Standard. I also want to
commend last year’s seniors
and juniors as the Sargent
School District’s average
ACT scores were above
both the National and State
average! There is some in-
formation on this on the Ne-
braska Department of Edu-
cation website if you would
like to look at it, and I will
have a more detailed report
in the November newsletter
when the rest of the data is
made available for public
release.
With students walking
around with more compu-
ting power on their phone
than we had in the entire
school 30 years ago interests
and tools have changed.
That is why staff continues
to work on implementing
technology into their classes
through google, schoology,
and several other programs.
With society using more
technology the school is
also adjusting communica-
tions with Facebook and
Twitter posts, as well as
parents being able to fol-
low what is going on by
using Schoology and Pow-
erschool to monitor their
child’s classes and grades.
If you have questions
about setting up parent ac-
counts contact Mr. Grint at
the school or talk to staff
about it at Parent Teacher
Conferences on Tuesday,
October 11th.
As I wrap this up I’d
like to take a moment to
encourage our parents to
be aware of their child’s
attendance. You can check
their attendance on Pow-
erSchool or by contacting
the school. Organization
and planning are an im-
portant part of school suc-
cess, as well as future suc-
cess. Parents and teachers
need to work together to
assure that our students
develop good habits and a
sense of responsibility to-
ward their commitments.
In closing I’d like to say
THANK YOU again for
your support of the school,
staff, students, and our pro-
grams.

Title I Tips Helping you to help your child in school!
Vocabulary Development and Reading Comprehension
Reading is a great way for your child to develop his or her vocabulary. The secret to success is making
sure your child is comprehending what he or she is reading. In other words, they are not just reading the
words out loud, but understanding the meaning. Sometimes kids worry so much about how to pronounce
a word that they lose track of the meaning. As you read to your child and your child reads to you, stop and
evaluate words. Ask your child what different words mean. The more words they understand the greater
the comprehension.
Have fun reading!
Mrs. Smith, Title I Coordinator
Please save your Big G Box tops !
Each box top is worth 10¢ when redeemed through the school. Drop off your box
tops in the office or give them to any elementary student. We will make a sub-
mission in October. The last submission netted over $500. Thank you for your
help!
We send a special thanks to a busy volunteer for clipping, sorting
and counting the box tops! Juanita Beran, thank you so much!
All students in first grade through twelfth grade at Sargent Public School currently participate in
the Accelerated Reader program which is designed to identify the students’ reading levels, allow
them to take quizzes over books that they have read and record the results of those quizzes. This
information assists the teachers in monitoring each student’s progress by allowing them to make
assessments and guide each student’s reading.
Accelerated Reader’s Renaissance Home Connect is available to bring some of this same infor-
mation to the parent. Home Connect can be viewed from any computer with Internet connec-
tion. By logging into this website, parents can see what quizzes are available, the quizzes their stu-
dent has taken, and how well their child scored on those quizzes. Parent can also sign up to re-
ceive an email each time their student takes an Accelerated Reader quiz.
Any parent that is interested in obtaining Home Connect can contact Mrs. Stefka at the school to
receive instructions on how to access this information. She can be reached at 527-4119 or ki-

Music Notes from the Classroom.
Welcome back to the Twin Loup Music program. The 7-12 Band has stayed steady in
numbers and it is always exciting to watch as the 7th grade students learn to play the
songs they have heard from the band through the years. We are currently working on
music for pep band and will soon start work on some longer concert band songs that
you will hear on Veterans’ Day.
The 7-12 Choir has also been hard at work. They are learning seven songs that will be
performed by the mass senior high choir during the MNAC Vocal Clinic in Callaway
on October 24th. The clinic is a required class activity for 9-12th grade students. When
we get closer to the date parents should expect to see some information come home
concerning this event.
On a trial run this year is a Music Appreciation class that is being offered to Jr. High
students on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Mrs. Kipp. This class is being offered for
students who have no desire to be in band or choir, but still need to have a music
class for their credits. The students will learn about different styles of music and gain
a greater understanding of what they hear when music is performed.
We have an adventurous group of Volunteer Singers meeting with Mrs. Kipp several
days a week before classes start. They are working to create a new school Show Choir.
It is wonderful that these students are willing to commit their own free time to this
group, and we look forward to their first appearance.
Grade School music has just finished a unit on Native American Music and Dance.
We have learned how the human heartbeat was an influence on the drumming in the
songs. They learned to sing a Welcome song that came from the tradition of the
Chumash Indians from California. To end the unit the students joined to do a Friend-
ship Community Dance, also called a Round Dance.

The Sargent Elementary students would like to encourage you to put your receipts in the Sargent
Schools box at the Grocery store. Proceeds from the Corner Market receipt program will go to
purchasing classroom supplies, technology, etc. If you are not familiar with the program there is
a box at the end of the checkout lane where you can leave your grocery receipts or you can send
them to school with any elementary student. Thank you for your help.
A big thank you to Corner Market for your generous support of our students and our school!

FBLA News
The FBLA chapter has had a busy start to the school year. We started out the month with an Of-
ficer meeting on August 15th, discussing and planning out the 2016-2017 school year. On the
22nd, FBLA members Bridget Slagle, Bailey Schneider, Vivian Slagle, and Andrea Maldonado
helped serve food at the August Chamber Meeting. On August 29, we had our first meeting of
the year. A new officer team was installed including Corri Slagle-President/Parliamentarian, Bella
Kissell-Vise President, Shelby Schneider-Secretary, Bailey Coons-Treasurer, and Delaney Gibbens
-Reporter. We also installed 10 new members.
On September 2, we kicked off the FBLA school year with a tailgate party before our first home
football game. The tailgate party was a huge success. We had great tasting bbq, salads, and fruits.
We would like to give a huge thanks to both towns for coming and supporting the FBLA chapter,
for the people who came and volunteered their time to cook and serve food.
The officers attended the Fall Leadership Conference in Kearney on September 27th. They were
able to attend breakout sessions to learn more about their office, discussing fundraising ideas, and
how to get involved in national projects.
The Wolf Den is open again this year and we are working on ordering some new items based on
requests from our customers. Some new items we will be getting are hoodies/crewnecks. The
Wolf Den is open at home games and can be opened by request. If you are interested in new
Twin Loup apparel, be sure to stop in!
As a whole, the FBLA has had a productive and exciting start to the year, and we thank you for
your continued support. It would not be possible without the supportive community that we
have. Thank You!
