Our first meeting of the
year was really jump-
in’!! We had a record
number of prospective
new members in attend-
ance. Introduce your-
selves to these women,
and make them feel wel-
come. Our new Vice
President/Program
Chair, Bev Bender,
invited Marty Williams
who gave us some great
information about being
prepared for an earth-
quake. We raised almost
$3000 from our PLANT
SALE! Congratulations
to us, and thanks to Mar-
ilyn Bittle and Twyla
Karkut and all of us who
worked so hard that
weekend.
Our next FUND RAIS-
ER is Romance, Inc., a
Holiday shopping bou-
tique, on Saturday, No-
vember 9 from 12:00-
4:00. Saturday, Septem-
ber 21, was Coastal
Cleanup Day, the largest
volunteer event in the
United States. Becky
Williams and I (and
Becky’s son, Sean)
combed the beach for
trash. Thankfully I
found very little trash on
the south side of the
pier, but I did find a
number of cigarette
butts. Cigarette filters
collect toxic chemicals
and carcinogens which
birds can ingest, mistak-
ing them for food. I
remembered that when
we took our children on
beach vacations, we had
a rule that on their way
back to the car, they
each had to pick up 3
pieces of trash, leaving
the beach a better place
than we found it.
Bring your plastic bot-
tles for recycling and the
5 cent refund. “To
change the world one
lives in, one must start
with where one lives.”
Your friend,
Ann Harmon
