Theheatindextwodaysagowasoveronehundreddegrees,andyetI’mwritingtoyouaboutOctober.Itishardtobelieve,butfallisjustaroundthecornerandthemonthofOctoberisaveryimportantmonthinourchurch.WewillbegintocollectforOperationChristmasChild,AngelaandIwillbeheadedtoLatviaastheCirsttripofwhatwepraytobemanymorefromourchurchinsupportoftheTolbertFamily,andIwillslowlybeginincorporatingChristmasmusicintomydailyroutine.

Octoberisalsoamonthofintensepreparationandprayerfortwoimportanteventsinthelifeofourchurch.Ofcourse,ourannualfallfestivaltakesplaceonOctober31.ManyhourswillbespentoverthenextmonthtoprepareforthehundredsofpeoplewhowillCloodourcampusonthatnight.TheotherimportanteventthatwewillbeprayingandpreparingforisafallrevivaltakingplaceNovember4-6.I’mexcitedaboutthisrevivalandI’maskingeachofyoutomakeitamatteroffocusedprayeroverthenextseveralweeks.

IhaveneverscheduledarevivalatMalvernHillinthetimeI’vebeenyourpastor,butIfeelveryburdenedrightnowabouttheneedtofocusourtimeandattentiontotherevivalofourpeopleandtheevangelismofourcommunity.WearehavingrevivalservicesinearlyNovember,butprayerandpreparationforourrevivalserviceswillbeamajorfocusofattentionduringOctoberaswelookforwardtoGod’smovementamongthepeopleofMalvernHill.

Whatcanyoudorightnow?1.BeginprayingforGodtoprepareyourhearttobechallengedandchangedthroughthepreachingofhisWord.2.PraythatGodwouldshowyouthesininyourownlifeofwhichyouneedtorepent.3.PraythatGodwouldrevealanycollectivesininourchurchofwhichweneedtorepent.4.PrayforthosewhoattendourservicestobeopentothemovementoftheHolySpirit.5.PrayforGodtoshowyouthreepeopleyoucaninvitetoattendourrevivalservices.6.Prayourthemeverse,Psalm119:25.

Ihopethatyouwillmakespecialefforttobeinprayerfortheupcomingmissions,evangelism,andrevivalopportunitieswithinourchurch.

MusicMinistryInmypreparationforEquippingStudiesrecently,IcameacrossasmallbitofscripturethatIhavereadathousandtimesbutneverreallyrealizedwhatIwasreading.It’sabitabouttheimportanceofsingingandworshiptoJesus,butwetendtooverlookacoupleofbeautifulmomentsofworshipbyJesusinthemidstofhissuffering.

Ifyouknewyouweregoingtoyourdeathwhatwouldyouwanttodo?You’dwanttospendtimewithfamilyandfriendsandyou’dspendtimepraying.Jesusdidthatbuthedidoneotherthingtoo.Hesang.Aftersharingameanwithhisfriendsandbeforepraying,Jesusworshippedinsong.

ThenasJesushungonthecrosstherearesevenrecordedthingshesaid.Oneofthosewas,“MyGod,

myGod,whyhaveyouforsakenme?”WhenweCirstreaditwecanfeelthedesperationandlonelinessthatJesusmusthavefelt.Whenwedigdeeper,werealizethatthosewordswerenotrandom.Jesuswasquotingscripture.Butwhatweoverlookisthefactthatthescripturehequotesisasong.ItisfromPsalm22…apsalmthatbeginswithspeciCicmelodicinstructionstothemusicians.Itwasaknowntuneandsomethingsungatthetemple.Jesusprobablylearnedthispieceofscriptureasachildbylearningtosingit,muchlikeweteachchildrenscripturetoday.SowhenJesusquotesthescripture,heisquotingthewordsofasongwrittenonhisheart.Hemayhavebeenintoomuchpaintosingandcouldonlyshoutoutthewords,butinthatmomentJesusreachedforwordsofworship.

Intimesofstrugglewhatdoyoureachfor?ConsidertheexampleofJesus.Hewasaworshippingandsingingsavior,andheworshippedandsanghiswaytothecross.

ThismonthIwanttogiveeveryoneareminderofwhatitmeanstostudytheBibleincontext.Whenitcomestohandlingscriptureproperly,theadageisthat“contextisking.”Ifyoudon’tconsiderthecontextofwhatyou’rereading,misinterpretationsandmisunderstandingshappeneasily.LearningtounderstandtheBibleinallitscontextswilltakeyourBiblicalunderstandingfromblackandwhitetofullcolor.

1.OverallContext–FirstandforemostwehavetoconsidertheBibleasawhole.Webelieveitiscomplete,inerrant,anduncontradictory.Whenwebegintolookformeaninginapassagewemustcompareittootherscriptures.Dothesametruthsappearelsewhere?DoesthepassagecontributetotheoverallpictureweknowaboutGodandscripture?Ifacontradictionseemstoexist,it’sbecauseamisinterpretationhasoccurred.Theoverallcontexthelpstopointyouintherightdirection.

2.ImmediateContext–Eachbookandeachauthorcanhaveuniquequalities.Certainauthorsmayuseonewordconsistentlytomeanonething,whereasanotherauthormightusethesamewordslightlydifferently.Whentryingtounderstandapassage,checkallthesurroundingscriptures,checkelsewhereinthesamebook,andcheckotherwritingbythesameauthorforcontextualclues.

3. LiteraryContext–TheBibleiswritteninseveraldifferentgenres.Knowingwhatgenreyouarereadinghelpsinyourjourneyofunderstanding.Youshouldreadabookofpoetrywithadifferentinterpretivelensthanyouwouldreadabookofhistory.

4. HistoricalContext–TheBibletellsusaccountsofthingsthatactuallyhappenedwithinaframeworkofhistory.Ifwedon’tslowdownandlearnthehistoricaleventsandpoliticallandscapessurroundingapassage,wemaynotfullygrasptheintendedmeaningoftheauthor.

5. CulturalContext–Differentpeoplegroupshavedifferentcustoms,colloquialism,expectations,andfears.Withanygivenpassagewemustconsidertheculturefromthreeperspectives:1.Theauthor’sculture.2.Theaudience’sculture.3.Thecultureofthepeoplewhoarethecharactersofthestory.AGreekwritingtoGreeksaboutJewsisgoingtotalkdifferentlythanJewwritingtoJewsaboutBabylonians.Learntheculturalnuancesofwhat’sbeingsaid.

Thechildren’sministrybeganthenewchurchyearwithabang.Iwouldliketothankalltheadultswhohelpedwithourannualwaterday.Wehadthelargestturnoutever,andweneededallyourhelp.OurCirstmission’sprojectfortheyearisRiceBowlsforOrphans.Thiswasstarted38yearsagoinSpartanburg,SC.Itisanon-proCitorganizationthatprovidesfoodfororphanedchildreninthenameofChrist.Beginningin2007,RiceBowlspartnereddirectlyinChristianchildren’shomes,CirstinIndiaandpartsofAfrica.RiceBowlshasraisedtensofmillionsofdollarstowardalleviatingworldhunger.Theorganizationiscurrentlyworkingwith58faithbasedchildren’shomesin9countriestoprovide100%ofthefoodforthechildrenintheircare.

Thechildrenhavebeguntakingthericebowlbankshome.WhentheygetthemCilledwithmoney,theyaretoreturnthem.TheprojectwillendonNovember14.Atthattimeallricebowlsaretobereturned.Wewillbreakthemopenandgiveanaccountingfortheamountofmoneyraised.

AsIwritethis,Iampreparingforanevent(meal)tobeheldonWednesday,September19.WhenthechildrenCirstcomein,theywillpickacoloredsticker.Theirmealwillbedependentonwhatcolorstickertheypick,buttheywon’tknowwhatthecolorsmean.Somewillhavemuchmorethanothers.Onegroupwillgetjustasmallpieceofbreadandsomewater,somewillgetriceandwater,andsomewillgetpizzaandtheirchoiceofdrink.Thepurpose,ofcourse,istoshowthemalittleofwhatworldhungerislike.

Oursecondmission’sprojectwillbeOperationChristmasChild.ThisministrysponsoredbySamaritan’sPursegivesfamiliesanopportunitytoworktogethertoputtogethershoeboxesofsmallgiftsandusefulitemsforchildren.TheboxeswillbeusedbySamaritan’sPursetotellothersaboutJesus.ManyofthechildrenreceivingtheboxesgoontoparticipateinSamaritanPurse’s12lessonfollow-upBiblestudycoursecalledTheGreatestJourney.Moreinformationwillbesenthomesoon.

OurannualfallfestivalwillbeheldonWednesday,October31from6:00until8:00.Thisisourgifttothecommunity.Itisatimeinwhichwehavetheopportunitytointeractwithpeoplelivingintheareathatwemightnotseetherestoftheyear.Attendanceusuallyrunsaround1500ormorepeople.Sign-upsheetswillgoupsoonwiththewaysthatyoucanhelpwiththisevent.Wewillalsoneeddonationsofcandy–lotsandlotsofcandy.

Wearegoingintoour10thyearofthisministry.MalvernHillworkswithMidwayElementaryprovidingsacksoffoodforchildrentotakehomeonweekends.Thesearechildrenwhosefamiliesarestrugglingtoprovideeventhebasicnecessitiesfortheirchildren.Ifyouwanttohelpwiththisministry,youcanhelpbydonatingmoneyforthepurchaseofthefoodorbyhelpingpackthebags.Thetimeanddateswepackthebagsareannouncedthroughthechurchannouncements.
