Todd Bissell, Principal
Dr. Rachel Heide, Assistant Principal
Erie Middle School Tiger Community,
We hope everyones school year is off to a great start. We have had a lot of activities at Erie Middle School to get the year started well.
Our October count is here. Attendance at school is always beneficial in your childs education. It is important that we have all students attend, unless they are sick, on October 1st. The school district receives funding from the state according to our count. The count window is from September 24th to
October 8th. Lets strive to have great attendance during these two weeks!
PTO had their first meeting on September 12th. PTO discusses how parents may assist in keeping and making Erie Middle School a great place of
learning for the students. PTO starts at 6:30 in the Library on the second
Monday of each month.
Our School Accountability Committee, SAC, will be starting soon. SAC looks at the school goals for accreditation for the upcoming school year as well as school policies, and events at school. We are looking for parent
representation from each grade level. If you are interested in joining this committee, please call me at school. Meeting dates for the upcoming school
year will be 10/20, 12/8, 2/16, and 4/12 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the library.
The magazine fundraiser was very successful. Student participation was
high and we beat our target from the last school year. Congratulations to the following top-selling classes; Mr. Duhon 6th grade, Mrs. Ryan 7th grade, and
Mrs. Harris 8th grade. Thank you to everyone who participated.
Parent teacher conferences are coming up. The afternoon and evenings of October 12th, 13th, and 15th will be our conference nights. Look for
information to come concerning conferences from the grade level teams.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Elective Team Solo Award
The 6th grade Elective Team Solo Award goes to Miley Mahan. Miley is an exemplary student. She is kind, compassionate, and thoughtful, and always thinks of the needs of others before her own. Academically, she is high achieving while still advocating for any needs she may have. In Choir, Miley always adds constructive and positive comments and contributes 100% effort."
The Elective Team Solo Award for 7th grade goes to Yahaira Luna. Aristotle said: "We are what repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." Yahaira repeatedly shows the following characteristics that make her a great choice for this month's Elective Team Solo Award. She works hard and asks great questions. She takes positive risks that make her a better musician and a good friend. Yahaira is kind with her words and actions. Thank you, Yahaira, for your habits of excellence.
The 8th Grade Elective Team Solo Award goes to Kayley Gundlach. Kayley brings an energy and enthusiasm to class and volleyball that is truly infectious. She gives everything a go and does not let obstacles get in her way from achieving her goals. Kayley perseveres and it pays off. Her laugh and excitement during volleyball have helped ease the nerves of her teammates and she sets a great example to peers and younger students as she continues to work hard to get better. Truly a great person to have in any group!!!
All elective students and students of the month will have their picture posted on
our Student of the Month bulletin board in the Main Office. They will also enjoy
a one topping large pizza on Friday, October 30th at their designated lunch
times. Students, please stop by the Main Office to let us know what kind of pizza
you would like.

Bully-Proofing you Child
Bullying is not a normal rite of passage. It can have serious consequences. You
can help your child learn how to prevent bullying. These tips can help:
Help your child understand bullying. Explain what bullying is. It is more than physical; it can be done in person or over the phone or computer.
Keep open lines of communication with your child. Check in with your
child and listen to any concerns about friends and other students.
Encourage your child to pursue their interests. Doing what they love may
help your child be more confident among their peers and make friends with other
kids with similar interests.
Teach your child to take a stand against bullying. Give guidance about
how to stand up to those who bully if it is safe to do so.
Talk to your child about seeking help from a trusted adult when feeling
threatened by a bully. Talk about whom they should go to for help and role-play
what they should say. Assure your child that they should not be afraid to tell an adult when someone they know is being bullied.
Know what is going on in your child's school. Visit the school website, read
the student newsletterand join the PTO. Get to know other parents, school counselors, the Prevention/Interventionist and staff. Contact the school by phone
or e-mail if you have suggestions to make the school a safer and better learning place.
