I would like to take a few minutes to thank the mem-bership for electing me to serve as KAEOP President for the 2015-2016 term. My deeds will be measured not by my youthful appearance, But by the concern lines on my forehead,
The laugh lines around my mouth, And the chins from seeing what can be done
For those smaller than me or who have fallen.

A FACEBOOK PAGE OF POSITIVITY
By Lisa Kimble
Often, it is the littlest of things that can affect the slightest of change—
one domino or word of encouragement at a time. Bakersfield’s Chuck
Wall did it with his “random acts of kindness”. Dignity Health set out to
do the same with its Human Kindness campaign.
And now, Bakersfield residents Jacki Etcheveste and Michelle Ming
are hoping to do so as well.
“Michelle and I were saying how sick we were of hearing and reading about bad news, violence,
horrible things,” Etcheveste recalled.
Her friend agreed. “Every time we listen to anything, it is about a crisis or hopelessness, “ Ming
added. “We wondered why we couldn’t hear about how we are trying to uplift each other. We needed to
change the conversation.”
That they did. They created a community page on Facebook. Be the Light that Illuminates 2015,
encouraging users of the popular social media site to “like” their page and spread the light virtually.
“We needed some positivity and thought it was time to hear about
the good stuff” Etcheveste said.
There are quotes, photographs of flowers and animals, and
notes of motivation from the likes of the Dalai Lama. A few days
into the new year, there was this post: “Don’t be a part of the
problem. Be a part of the solution. Seems like a reasonable
mantra to strive for.”
Etcheveste, a licensed esthetician and owner of Golden
Youth Rejuvenation Centre and Pilates, and Ming, a second-grade
teacher at Seibert Elementary, hope that the postings and every
day personal interactions will have a domino effect, and the page
will become a go-to place for daily does of pick-me-ups.
The only mandate is that whatever is shared on the page
be affirmative and enriching. The women have also made rubber
bracelets that they plan to hand out to Etcheveste’s clients and at
Seibert Elementary.
“It seems like there is an imbalance between stories about
bad things and uplifting events, and we want to tilt the scale a bit,”
Etcheveste said.
So far, their numbers are slight, but friends and relatives in faraway countries have joined their effort as
the momentum builds. “Light always overcomes darkness; positivity always overcomes negativity; love always
overcomes hate; courage always prevails over fear“, they wrote on the page. In doing so, the women say they
are waging their war on darkness and challenging others to follow suit.
“It is a humanity thing. We can be the light. It doesn’t have to be all darkness,” Etcheveste said. “This
is the flip side of doom and gloom.”
And in the spirit of paying it forward in an encouraging fashion, they are inviting others with a positive out-
look on life to share positive thought and be a part of the wattage and brightness.
“If you don’t like something; change it; if you can’t change it,
change the way you think about it.” ~ Mary Engelbreit

Working to help cats in Kern County since 1990.
The Cat People is a 100% volunteer organization that was founded to eliminate the suffering of unwanted cats and kittens. A group of women started working together over 20 years ago to help the abandoned cats and kittens in Hart Park in Kern County. Today, the organization has an official contract with the county to manage the colonies in Hart
Park, and it provides spay/neuter vouchers and food to low income families to assist them in keeping their beloved pets
and/or to control growth of colonies around their homes. It operates completely out of foster homes, and the
organization works with Petco to hold adoption hours once a week.
You can donate a couple bucks, become a member, sign up for automatic giving, or you can donate time through
volunteer work. It all makes a difference.
The Cat People are taking donations.

PUMPKIN COBBLER
Ingredients
cooking spray
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 (15 ounce) can pure pumpkin (such as Libby's(R))
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1 teaspoon orange extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (9 ounce) package yellow cake mix (such as Jiffy(R) Golden Yellow cake mix)
1/4 cup butter, melted
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray an 8-inch square baking dish with cooking spray.
2. Whisk sugar and eggs together in a bowl until light; stir pumpkin, evaporated milk, orange extract, cinnamon,
ginger, cloves, and salt into egg mixture. Pour pumpkin mixture into the prepared baking dish. Lightly sprinkle cake mix over the top, covering pumpkin mixture completely. Slowly drizzle melted butter over the cake mix so it doesn't puddle.
3. Bake in the preheated oven until the pumpkin mixture is set and topping is golden brown, 50 minutes to 1 hour.
