Outline and explain two features of the Marxist perspective on education (10 marks)

One feature of the Marxist perspective on education is the idea that the education system is structured to lead the working class into false consciousness. For Marxists, it does this by transmitting the ideas and norms beneficial to the bourgeoisie, the ruling class ideology, through the hidden curriculum. Althusser argues that the education system is part of the ideological state apparatus and through teaching children that inequality is justified on the grounds of meritocracy, the education system persuades the working class from childhood to submit to the exploitation and domination of the bourgeoisie.

Another feature of the Marxist perspective on education is the idea that the education system inherently favours upper and middle class students, leading to an unjust disadvantage for working class children which leads to the reproduction of class inequality. Bordieu argues that the educational success is strongly linked to a child's cultural capital; the knowledge, language and behaviour of the upper class. The education system desires cultural capital and therefore working class children who don't gain it through primary socialisation are at a disadvantage from the outset. This makes social mobility very difficult, as working class children find it difficult to do well in school and break the cycle of poverty. Marxists see this as unjust, and grounds for deschooling society.

Reproduction of a workforce:1) Work and its rules and expectations overshadows education from the start through its influence and use of the hidden curriculum.

How might the influence of the workplace when still in education be a negative thing?

2) Education legitimises inequality and makes people accept their place in society. They reject functionalist views that meritocracy exists‐ they argue that inequality exists on basis of background, gender, ethnicity etc.

Evaluation of the Marxist perspective of education:Strengths and limitations?

‐Students don't really just passively accept the hidden curriculum; they can think for themselves!

‐ Quite a subjective and negative perspective

‐Humanities subjects in school actually encourage questioningand critical thinking skills.
