HISTORY
The development of nylon6,6 was started from 1927
by means of many researchers, notably among
them W.H.Carothers. and P.Schlack
Introduction Nylon-6,6 is a type of polymer. It is commonly known as nylon. The IUPAC name for nylon 6,6 is-
Poly[imino(1,6-dioxohexamethylene) imnohexamethylene.
Other name hexane-1, 6 diamine Poly(hexamethylene adipamide), Poly[imino(1,6-dioxohexamethylene) iminohexamethylene]
The simple molecular formula for nylon 6,6 is - C12H22N2O2.
The CAS number is: 32131-17-2The molecular weight is: 262.345840
g/mol.
synthesis• Materials
Hexamethlenediamine (1,6-hexanedi-amine)
Adipic acid, Solvent: tap water and cyclohexane.

Mechanism of preparation nylon is made by a reaction which is a
step-growth polymerization, and a condensation polymerization. Nylons are made from diacids and diamines. If you want to see what adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine
Physical Properties• Elasticity: Breaking extension is 20-40%.• Stiffness: 20-40 gm/den.• Moisture regain: 3.5-5%.• Specific gravity: 1.14.• Abrasion resistance: Excellent.• Dimensional stability: Good.• Resiliency: Excellent.• Softening point: Nylon 6,6 – 229 °C• Melting point: Nylon 6,6 – 252 °C• Hand feel: Soft and smooth.
Chemical Properties
Alkali: Nylon is substantially inert to alkalis. Organic solvent: Most of the solvent have little or no effect on nylon. Light: No discoloration. Biological: Neither micro organism nor moth, larvae attack nylon. Electrical: High insulating propertiesFlammability: Burns slowly.Extremely chemically stable
Application of nylon Nylon 6-6 is frequently used when high mechanical strength, great rigidity, and good stability under heat is required . It is used for: pipes, various machine parts. carpet fiberes
airbags, tyres, ropes Etc….
.
AdvantagesHigh elongation Nylon 6,6 is very stable.Heat resistanceChemical resistance to hydrocarbonsHigh resistance to: insects, fungi and animals,
molds, mildew, rot Nylon 6,6 has high tensile strength Used in carpets and nylon stockings Melts instead of burning Highly resilientUsed in many military applicationsUsed in the industry
Disadvantages
- Requires UV stabilization - High water absorption-Poor chemical resistance to strong acids and bases
- Attacked by oxidizing agents
- Attacked by strong acids and bases
