TheAppliedNutritionmajoristhemostflexiblemajoranddesignedforthepersonwhowantstocombineastudyofnutritionwithanotherareaofinterest,includingaminor.StudentsintendingtopursuetheDieteticsmajorbeginintheAppliedNutritioncurriculumandapplytoDieteticsaftermeetingcourseworkandGPArequirements.
DieteticsisthemajorforstudentswhowanttobeahealthprofessionalandearntheRegisteredDietitianNutritionist(RDN)orDieteticTechnician,Registered(DTR)credential.Dietitiansaretranslatorsoffoodandnutritioninformationforindividualsandgroupswhoseektoremainwellorwhoneednutritionaladviceasanadjuncttothetreatmentofdisease.Dietitiansalsoimpactnutritionalwell-beingwhentheymanagefoodserviceoperations.
TheNutritionalSciencesmajorhasaverystrongsciencecomponentinthecurriculumandisparticularlydesignedforthoseexpectingtopursueanadvanceddegreeinareassuchasnutritionalsciences,medicine,dentistryorphysicaltherapy.

MAJORSINNUTRITIONANDDIETETICSDEPARTMENTMISCELLANEOUSINFORMATIONAdvising:StudentswillworkwithaProfessionalAcademicAdvisoruntilsuchtimethatthestudentcompletes60credits.Uponcompletionof60creditsstudentswillthenbeassignedtoaFacultyAdvisorforthedurationoftheirundergraduatecareer.HoweverallnewstudentsintheirfirstsemesterwithinthenutritionprogramsareencouragedtoconsultwithaProfessionalAcademicAdvisorregardlessoftheiraccumulatedcredittotal.Studentsareencouragedtoinitiatediscussionofcareergoalsandinterestswiththeiradvisor(s).AdvisorsinNutritionandDieteticsareactiveprofessionallyandareagoodresourceforansweringquestions.Theyalsocareaboutthesuccessofthestudentandareeagertofacilitatethestudent’sbestprogresstowardshis/hergoal.
HonorsOptions:Somebeginninglevelnutritioncoursesandseveralrequiredcoursesinthesciences,socialsciencesandhumanitiesareofferedforHonorscredit;therefore,eachoftheNutritionandDieteticsmajorscanaccommodatestudentsenteringtheUniversityintheHonorsProgram.
GradeRequirements:StudentsinallmajorsinNutritionandDieteticsmustcompletehumanphysiologyandbiochemistrylectureandlabaswellasallrequiredcoursesinNutritionandDieteticsandFoodSciencewithagradeofC-orabove.
WorkExperience:Majorsshouldpursueworkorvolunteerexperiencesduringtheircollegecareersinpositionsrelatedtothefield.Theseexperienceshelpthestudenttorelatemoredirectlytotheconceptsstudiedintheclassroom.Thepersonwithworkexperiencehasthecompetitiveedgeinapplicationsforemployment,scholarships,dieteticinternshipsandgraduatework.
NutritionandDieteticsClub:Studentsareencouragedtoseekpre-professionalinvolvementbyparticipatinginthestudentorganization,theNutritionandDieteticsClub.Activitiesincludeorganizingspeakersoncareersandnutritionissuessuchaseatingdisorders,sponsoringhealthfairs,formingstudygroupsandserviceprojects.
SpecialPrograms:Thecourse“TransculturalFoodandCuisine”isanelectivetravelstudycoursethatincludesactiveparticipationwithpeopleofdiversefoodhabitsandisapplicabletotheUniversity’smulticulturalrequirement.ThecoursehasinthepastincludedanexperienceinHawaiiandBelize,CentralAmericaduringWinterSession.
Seminars:AFirstYearExperienceFreshmanseminar(NTDT103)featurescareeropportunitiesinnutritionandaSeniorseminar(NTDT403)preparesstudentforapplicationstopositionsandprogramsfollowinggraduation.AllstudentsarewelcometoattendtheDepartment’sweeklyGraduateSeminarduringthespringsemester.

MAJORSINNUTRITIONANDDIETETICSAPPLIEDNUTRITIONMAJORGoal:Topreparestudentsforcareersthatcombinenutritionwithanotherareaofinterest.
DescriptionofMajor:TheAppliedNutritionprogramhascoursesinscienceandmathsimilartotheDieteticsmajorbuthasmoreflexibilityinchoiceofdepartmentalcoursesandelectives.Themajorwasdesignedsothatanotherareaofstudycanbecombinedwiththestudyofnutrition.Thisflexibilityallowsstudentstopursuecareergoalsrelatedtophysicaltherapy,nursing,chiropracticschool,physicianassistantorotherhealthrelatedprofessions.StudentswhointendtopursuetheDieteticsmajorbeginintheAppliedNutritionmajoruntilmeetingthefollowingcriteria:1)completionof40credithoursatthecollegelevel,minimumof12atUD,2)minimumcumulativeGPAof2.75,and3)completionofthefollowingsevencourses:

DieteticsMajorandRegisteredDietitianNutritionists(RDN)
“ThemajorityofRegisteredDietitianNutritionistsworkinthetreatmentandpreventionofdisease(administeringmedicalnutritiontherapy,oftenpartofmedicalteams),inhospitals,HMOs,privatepracticeorotherhealth-carefacilities.Inaddition,alargenumberofRDNsworkincommunityandpublichealthsettingsandacademiaandresearch.AgrowingnumberofRDNsworkinthefoodandnutritionindustry,inbusiness,journalism,sportsnutrition,andcorporatewellnessprograms(fromhttp://www.eatright.org/students/getstarted/highschool.aspx,June2011.
Thecoursesinthemajorbuildonabaseofchemistry,biologyandsocialsciences.Thestudentdevelopscompetencyfromcoursesinfoodscience,foodservicemanagementandmedicalnutritiontherapy.
TheDieteticscurriculummeetstherequirementsestablishedbytheAccreditationCouncilforEducationinNutritionandDietetics(ACEND),theaccreditingagencyfortheAcademyofNutritionandDietetics,andcontributestoeligibilitytotaketheregistrationexaminationforcertificationasaRegisteredDietitianNutritionist(RDN).RegisteredDietitianNutritionistsareindividualswhohave:
• CompletedtheminimumofaBaccalaureatedegreegrantedbyaU.S.regionallyaccreditedcollegeoruniversity,orforeignequivalent;
• Metcurrentminimumacademicrequirements(DidacticPrograminDietetics)accreditedbyACENDoftheAcademyofNutritionandDietetics;
• Completedasupervisedpracticeprogram(dieteticinternship)accreditedbyACEND• SuccessfullycompletedtheRegistrationExaminationforDietitians;and• CompliedwiththeProfessionalDevelopmentPortfolio(PDP)recertification
requirements.
TheDieteticsmajorprovidesthecourseworkfortheclassroom(didactic)portionoftherequirement.TheDieteticsprogramisaccreditedbyACEND,theaccreditingagencyfortheAcademyofNutritionandDietetics,120SouthRiversidePlaza,Suite2000,Chicago,IL60606.Phone312.899.0040,extension5400.TheDieteticmajorpreparesstudentsforadmissiontopost-baccalaureatedieteticsupervisedpracticeprograms(dieteticinternships).ThesupervisedpracticeportionmustbeobtainedfollowingtheBachelor’sdegreewithaDieteticsmajor.Theseinternshipsareusually9-12monthsinlengthandvaryincost.Admissionisverycompetitive.Theprogramorientsthestudenttotheinternshipapplicationprocessduringthesenioryear.TheUniversityofDelawareoffersa33-weekdieteticinternshipprogramand,uponsuccessfulcompletion,thegraduateiseligibletotaketheRDNexam.UponreceivingtheirBachelorofSciencedegree,graduatesoftheDieteticsmajorhavetheoptiontotaketheexamfortheDieteticTechnician,Registered(DTR)credential(seelaterDTRsection).

TheDepartmentofBehavioralHealthandNutritionoffersaDieteticInternshiptostudentsfollowinggraduationfromabaccalaureateprogramindietetics.Theinternshipiscurrentlyaccreditedtoenrollupto45dieteticinternsannually.Admissiontothisinternshipisonacompetitivebasis.Studentsmakeapplicationstointernshipsduringtheirsenioryear.ApreselectoptionisavailabletograduatesofUD’sdidacticprogramindietetics,whichallowsupto17studentstogainearlyadmissiontotheinternshipeachJanuary.Gotowww.udel.edu/bhan/dieteticformoreinformationonUD’sDieteticInternshipprogram.
Thisinternshipprovidesdieteticsprogramgraduateswithanopportunitytoincreasetheirknowledgeoffoodandnutritionscience,andtoacquirecompetenciesneededtopracticedieteticsinavarietyofsettings.Uponsuccessfulcompletionoftheprogram,eachstudentwillreceiveaverificationofcompletioncertificateandbeeligibletotaketheRegistrationExaminationforDietitians.
UDDieteticInternshipAdmissionCriteria
ThefollowingcategoriesareincludedintheadmissionevaluationofUDDieteticInternshipapplications:1)UndergraduateGPA(minimumrequiredGPAis2.75),2)dietetics-relatedworkexperience,3)lettersofrecommendation,4)volunteerexperience,5)leadershipexperience,and6)personalstatement.
ROTATIONSCHEDULE:
TheinternshipwillbecompletedduringtheFallandSpringsemestersinadditiontoaone-weekorientationprogramwhichbeginsinmid-August.Theprogramisdesignedtoprovidethestudentwith40hoursofpracticeexperienceperweekaugmentedwith2hoursperweekofaseminarcourse(NTDT650and651).Anoutlineoftherotationsisasfollows:

MAJORSINNUTRITIONANDDIETETICSNUTRITIONALSCIENCESMAJORGoal:Toprovideaverystrongbackgroundinthechemicalandbiologicalsciencesuponwhichstudentsbuildastudyofhumannutrition.Itisdesignedaspreparationforgraduateprogramsthatutilizeastrongscienceandhumannutritionbackground.
DescriptionofMajor:TheNutritionalSciencesmajorisstronginthesciencesbasictothestudyofnutrition.Itincludesonesemesterofcalculus(orequivalent)whichisimportantfortakingtheupperlevelChemistryandBiologycourses.Itspecifies,forexample,atwo-semesterOrganicChemistryrequirement;otherdepartmentalmajorsrequireaone-semestercourse.ItincludesQuantitativeAnalysisandPhysics,alsonotrequiredfortheothermajorsinthedepartment.Thestudentwiththisbackgroundhasastrongfoundationforsubsequentgraduateresearchworkinnutritionalsciencesandrelatedfields.
NutritionalSciencesmajorscanreadilycompleteminorsinChemistryand/orBiology.Dependingontheirparticularcareerandprofessionalgoals,manyalsoapplytocompletetherequirementsoftheDieteticscurriculum.
Admission:StudentsareencouragedtocompletefouryearsofhighschoolscienceandfouryearsofhighschoolmathaswellastheothercoursesrequiredforadmissiontotheUniversityofDelaware.Acumulativegradepointaverageof2.0isrequiredfortransferintoNutritionalSciencesfromwithintheuniversity.
Retention:Acumulativegradepointaverageof2.0isrequiredtoremainingoodstanding.
Costs:Therearenosubstantialspecificprogramcostsbeyondtuitionandothercostsrelatedtoenrollingincollegecourses.
FutureOpportunities:Theprimaryopportunityforgraduateswillrelatetothegraduateprogramthattheycompleteinconjunctionwiththestrongnutritionalsciencesundergraduateprogram.Withappropriateselectionsofelectivecourses,thismajorcanserveasapre-medical,pre-dentaland/orpre-physicaltherapydegree,amongothers.Studentsinterestedinnutritionresearchand/oruniversityteachingwillbequalifiedtocontinueingraduateprogramswithastrongscienceorientation.EmploymentimmediatelyaftertheBSdegreeispossible,butagraduatedegreeisrecommendedforthepositionswithresponsibilityandskillscommensuratewiththeleveloftheundergraduatecoursework.

NUTRITIONMINORMinimumCreditsintheMinor:15(alsorequires16prerequisiteCHEMcredits)
AminorinNutritionprovidesstudentinavarietyofdegreeprogramswithafairlyintensivelevelofunderstandingofnutritionalscience.Thisminorisforstudentsinterestedinthefieldofnutritionwhobelievethatgoodnutritionandhealthylifestylechoicesareimportantfortheoverallwell-beingofindividuals.Theprogramincludesthreecorenutritioncourses,twonutritionelectivesandrequiresfoursemestersofchemistryand,assuch,iswellsuitedforstudentsinBiology,ChemistryandNursing,amongothers.ItisnotavailabletostudentsinthemajorsofAppliedNutrition,DieteticsorNutritionalSciencesduetotheextensiveamountofcourseoverlap.Aminimumof15credithourswithaminimumgradeofC-isrequiredforallNTDTcourses.REQUIREDCOURSES(PR=Prerequisites) Credits
