Dear Families:
There are many varieties of melons. Common varieties
include watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew.
• Choose melons that are firm, symmetrical and
heavy for their size.
• Avoid melons with bruises, cuts or dents.
Watermelons should have a creamy yellow spot
where they sat on the soil.
• Store melons at room temperature for 7-10 days.
After cutting, they will keep for 3-4 days in the
refrigerator.

Melon Salsa Serves 12
All you need:
Ingredients:
2 cups melon (honeydew, cantaloupe or watermelon—seeded and chopped fresh)
1 cup cucumber (peeled, seeded and chopped)
1/4 cup onion, red or white (chopped)
2 tablespoons cilantro or mint (optional)
1 jalapeno (seeded and finely chopped)
1/4 cup lime juice or lemon juice
1 tablespoon white sugar
All you do:
In a medium size bowl, stir together all ingredients.
Taste and season with more lemon or lime juice, sugar if needed.
Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes. Serve with grilled or broiled fish or chicken.
Watermelon Pizza Make a fun watermelon pizza with your child. Simply slice watermelon and top
with fruit of choice. You can use yogurt for the “pizza sauce” and shredded coco-
nut for the “pizza cheese.”
Aim for 5 servings of fruit and vegetables every day! Melons are a fruit.
