All Natural vs. SyntheticSome companies market and position their products as "all natural." This can be misleading to consumers because some companies claim their products are 100% natural, misusing the power of "all natural" marketing, when their products actually contain synthetics.

Also, it misinforms consumers by conveying the bias that any natural ingredient is good and and all synthetic ingredients are bad—even though many synthetic ingredients can be more effective and safer than comparable botanicals.

Natural vs. Synthetic

Synthetic simply means that the ingredients are not derived directly from a plant but created in a laboratory and manufactured as a raw material.

Whether natural or synthetic, ingredients in Nu Skin products are selected and then tested to ensure the best benefits, efficacy, and safety.

Skin aging results from the deterioration of structures in the skin and the slowing of healthy skin function in the following ways:

Basic Needs

The four essential steps for basic skin care are cleanse, tone, protect, and hydrate.

1. Cleanse: Cleansing should be performed twice daily.2. Tone: Toning fulfills a basic daily need by preparing the skin to receive the benefits from other products and should be performed twice daily, after cleansing.3. Protect: The protect step meets the skin's basic need for a morning moisturizer with SPF to guard against harmful UV rays and environmental stressors.4. Hydrate: Nighttime hydration should be applied once daily in the evening.

Advanced NeedsIn addition to the basic daily needs, those with specific skin concerns such as discoloration, acne, free radical damage, and aging may need to incorporate some of the following advanced steps:

1. Exfoliate: Exfoliation helps remove dead cell buildup for smoother, more youthful looking skin and can stimulate the cell renewal process.2. Mask: Masks deliver key ingredients to the skin, while others draw out impurities.3. Treat: The treat step meets an essential advanced need of the skin when key components, functions, or structures within the skin are compromised, leading to signs of premature aging.

History of PharmanexDr. Michael Chang spent 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry. Working with drug companies often resulted in less effective products with more side effects. In addition, pharmaceutical companies require that new products generate at least 100 million U.S. dollars in the first year to justify the cost of development. He realized the tremendous benefit of natural products created, refined, and substantiated through a scientific pharmaceutical approach.

Dr. Chang left the pharmaceutical industry and started Pharmanex in 1994 to pursue his vision of delivering natural nutraceutical products that could be scientifically proven to change people's lives. This attracted the business expertise needed to build a successful company. On October 18, 1998, Pharmanex was acquired by Nu Skin Enterprises, a leading direct sales company.

Pharmanex 6S Quality Process

Many years of testing and development by leading researchers at Pharmanex and major U.S. and international universities have led to breakthroughs in every aspect of natural product development.

Safety and health benefits are necessary characteristics for a health supplement that is of the highest quality. The 6S Process is a standard that defines these capabilities.


1. Selection: Each ingredient Pharmanex selects for use has met strict standards for efficacy, safety, and quality. After an ingredient has been identified for use, Pharmanex scientists conduct laboratory and clinical trials to confirm ingredient efficacy and safety.

2. Sourcing: Once Pharmanex has selected a particular ingredient samples are gathered from various areas of the world for testing in our labs. Only quality ingredients that pass extensive Pharmanex criteria for authenticity, efficacy, and safety are considered. We test for density, moisture, heavy metals, pesticides, solvent residue, and microbiology such as bacteria, E. coli, and more. If there is a failure in any area, the entire shipment is rejected.


3. Structure: Some companies make supplements that are actually missing the beneficial ingredients. Just because a product contains a particular plant doesn’t mean it contains the active ingredients that offer real health benefits. We look for ingredients that contain the most beneficial portion of the source.

4. Standardization: When creating any product it is important to be consistent in order to end up with the same product each time. Each capsule of a Pharmanex product consistently contains the same amount of each active ingredient. This is achieved through strict standardization processes that were developed through chemical fingerprinting. The end product is ensured to have consistent quality.


5. Safety: Through every step of development our scientists follow an involved regimen to ensure all ingredients are safe, and an ingredient can be rejected at any stage of the process. Safeguards during each step of the product creation process guarantee the safety of each Pharmanex product.

6. Substantiation: Scientific testing at the highest level takes place

for every product Pharmanex creates. Not only do we publish and conduct our own studies, we build on research conducted by our Scientific Advisory Board and other affiliates, including some of the most respected minds in science.

Animal TestingNu Skin advocates and subscribes to both the ethical and humane treatment of animals and the protection of human health and safety.

Nu Skin ProductsNu Skin does not test its cosmetic products on animals, nor do we request others to test on our behalf, except when mandated by law and regulatory agencies. We evaluate our products in clinical tests on human volunteer panels to ensure the efficacy and safety of our products.

Pharmanex ProductsWhen it comes to the company’s nutritional products (Pharmanex), Nu Skin adheres to the same philosophy. Nu Skin nutritional and herbal products (Pharmanex) are consumed internally, and as a result some government regulatory agencies may require animal research to support human safety and product efficacy. In cases when it is necessary to conduct animal studies, we make every effort to do so in an ethical and humane manner and adhere to applicable and approved government-treatment protocols.
