Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden News
Students have been planting banana plants, aerating and
creating compost, filling and planting out raised boxes,
transplanting strawberries and potatoes, and harvesting peas,
herbs, lettuce, spinach and broccoli. The chooks are laying
more eggs more frequently. Drainage digging will begin next
week in the bluestone garden beds and retaining walls. There
will be a garden stall at the art show so we hope to see
everyone there.
Thank you Anna
Please keep your recipe's for our SAKG cookbook coming in. The recipe box is located outside the general office.

OSHC NEWS
Greetings from the Dorset OSHC!
We have been having an awesome time this week with our clay modeling, sculptures, face painting and masks! Next term, we look forward to doing some awesome science activities like working with magnets and building mechanical toys for the program!!
We are still looking for donations for our craft activities, so if you have any flannelette shirts, windcheaters, large plastic ice cream containers or anything you might consider “arty”, we’d love to accept your donations! :)
We have Holiday Club over the holidays which will be awesome fun! We’ll be going to the movies, having a football day, science day and even a trip to the party factory! For more information, please log onto www.campaustralia.com.au/holidayclubs
And finally, on June 28, which is the last day of school, we will be having OSHC start at 2:30pm, and throwing a party night to celebrate the holidays, so it’d be great to see you all there!!
If you have any questions, please feel free to come in and visit us in the OSHC room or call our mobile on 0417 566 915

“Class wake up call”
I read with interest the article Herald Sun
June 14th, page 11 “Class wake up call” by Ashley
Ryan discussing issues of children turning up to
school chronically tired. I personally have met with
students who state they sit up very late watching TV,
iphones, ipods, ipads this added to midweek outings
tax the developing brain. The article states that ‘schools
are calling on experts to counsel parents.’
When a student turns up for school perhaps in some
cases late due to sleeping in, their ability to concentrate
is diminished dramatically. The teacher tries to set the
agenda of what the class will be doing for the day,
however the student appears to simply not engage at all
due to lack of sleep.
In other cases the child is simply too tired and the
parent allows the child to stay home, thus missing out
on not only learning opportunities but also socialising
with his/ her friends.
HOW MUCH REST/SLEEP DO KIDS NEED
Pre school (3-5yrs) 11-13 Hours
Primary school (5-12 yrs) 9-11 Hours
Teenagers (12-18yrs ) 8.5-9.5 Hours

This week’s tip:
Promote independence in your child’s daily life. Encourage

NUDE LUNCHES
From term 3, we will be encouraging children to bring rubbish free lunches to school or ‘nude food’ every Wednesday. All grades will be promoting reducing the amount of waste we produce and celebrating our successes.
Here are some ideas to reduce packaging: *Put food in plastic containers instead of glad wrap. *Fruit/vegetables are healthy alternatives and scraps are composted. *Buy a large packet of snacks and place a few in a container each day *Cubes of cheese and a few biscuits, replacing dips in packets *Drinks in reusable bottles (Water is recommended) *Buy a large pot of yoghurt and place a little into a container each day.
CROSS COUNTRY FINALS
Last week the four students who qualified at the
District Cross country went on to compete in the
divisional finals. At these finals Fraser Sheridan
( 11 yr boys – finished 14th) , Jing Rong (12/13 yr
boys – finished 25th ), Soraya McLean (10 yr girls –
finished 9th) and Thomas Sheridan (11 yr boys –
finished 1st ). These were extremely good results
considering the high level of this competition.
Soraya and Thomas qualified to compete in the
regional finals. These were held on Tuesday.
Soraya came 45th in her race. Thomas came 4th in
his race and qualified to compete in the State
Championships.
We wish Thomas luck and success in this up-coming
competition.

Games and venues –
Dear Parents, Term 2 is almost over and lots of great events have occurred at our school. This will be the last newsletter for this term so keep safe and enjoy your holidays!! Art Show This Friday night 6pm to 8pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm the fabulous Dorset Art Show will take place. The children along with Kirsten Haworth (our resident artist) have been working very hard on completing amazing pieces of artwork. Please come along and support this event and enjoy some delicious home made food provided by Mr Jacobs and the SAKG staff. Head Lice As school is experiencing a bit of a lice problem a qualified nurse will be visiting the school. This is a routine examination and the nurse will notify parents if there is a confirmed case of head lice. All confidentiality and privacy is adhered to during the nurse’s visit. Disco Friday the last day of term will be disco day! It is important that children dress in their disco gear but please keep in mind practical footwear and no strappy tops. School Production Term 3 is going to revolve around our school production. It is such a wonderful experience for the children and really allows them to learn and grow on a different level. If you can help in any way please contact Mrs Ray or Madame. Nude Food As of term 3 every Wednesday will be nude food lunch day. It is important the parents support this to enable children to learn about how to preserve and care for our environment. Try to involve them in packing and sorting their lunch on these days. It could be a family challenge and have all involved!! Planning Days This week the teachers have been involved in planning days. Listening in as I have been, the teachers are planning some comprehensive and detailed programs for next term. I’m really looking forward to Market Day for the grade 5/6’s. Next term already sounds very busy and productive. Keep safe these holidays! Enjoy and ensure the children are rested enough to tackle the busy term. Kind Regards, Palma Coppa Assistant Principal
