Welcome to the University of New England!
The Nor’Easter Bowl 2010 is the Northern New England regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl
(NOSB). This event is co-sponsored by:
The University of New England, with campuses in Biddeford and Portland, is an independent, coeducational university with degree programs in the health professions, liberal arts, physical, life and marine sciences. The Department of Marine Sciences and Marine Science Education and Research Center provide students, faculty and visiting researchers with a window to the sea. The Center is the only facility of its kind and contains two state-of-the-art flow-through seawater teaching laboratories and labs dedicated to marine biology research. The Center is also home to the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center (MARC), with diagnostic and medical care facilities for seals, cetaceans, and sea turtles. In addition, UNE provides a major in aquaculture and aquarium science. The University of Maine School of Marine Sciences, with more than 50 faculty, has the largest concentration of marine expertise in Maine and offers one of the largest programs in the Northeast. The School’s academic programs include marine science, aquaculture, marine biology, oceanography, and marine policy. The Semester-by-the-Sea, a unique in-residence program at the Darling Marine Center, provides a total immersion experience with intensive field experience for marine science majors. Housed on 170 acres in the Damariscotta River Estuary, the Darling Marine Center is the marine laboratory of the University of Maine. With nine resident faculty, research vessels, seawater laboratories, and electron microscope facilities, the Center functions year-round as a research and education facility serving faculty, staff, students, and visiting researchers from around the world. The Maine Sea Grant College Program supports marine science research and outreach activities to promote the understanding, sustainable use, and conservation of ocean and coastal resources. Based at the University of Maine, our coast-wide program works in partnership with marine industries, scientists, government agencies, private organizations and a wide range of marine resource users. Maine Sea Grant is part of the National Sea Grant College Program, a network of 30 programs located in each of the coastal and Great Lake states. The University of New Hampshire is home to academic programs in marine biology, oceanography and ocean engineering. The Marine Program serves as a catalyst for marine research activities at various levels from individual scientists to large interdisciplinary Centers of Excellence. Three marine laboratories enhance the Program: The Jackson Lab, the Coastal Marine Lab and the Shoals Marine Lab. Kingman Farm is home to New Hampshire Sea Grant and UNH Marine Docents volunteer their time to deliver marine education. Bigelow Laboratories for Ocean Sciences, located in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, is a world-renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to marine research and education. Bigelow is home to the Center for Culture of Marine Phytoplankton, the world’s largest collection of phytoplankton, and the J.J. Maclsaac Aquatic Cytometry Facility, a laboratory dedicated to the application of imaging and flow cytometry to problems in aquatic science. Bigelow’s education and outreach endeavors transfer the excitement of scientific discovery to students of all ages, fostering scientific literacy and creativity. Through marine research and education, Bigelow is advancing our understanding and appreciation of the world’s oceans. Maine Maritime Academy is an international leader in maritime studies, with programs that address today’s needs and tomorrow’s concerns regarding energy production, international business practices and the ocean environment. Their academic programs are designed, managed, and taught by faculty from diverse academic backgrounds, from industrial positions in engineering, shipping operations, marine science, maritime management, and small vessel design and operation.

Teams E1-E3 are eliminated from the competition. • The top ranked team takes the C1 seed. In the case of a tie, the coaches
from the top 2 ranked teams draw lots to decide which team receives the C1 seeding.
• The top seed in flight C plays the eighth seed in flight D • The second seed in flight C plays the seventh seed in flight D, C3 vs. D6, etc. • Pairings are established so that, if C1 and D1 win all their rounds they would

Science Enhancement Activity
Explore the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center (MARC) 45-minute tours starting at 1:00pm, 2:00pm, and 3:00pm Meet in the Lobby of the Marine Science Center (#17 on the UNE Campus Map) Meet with MARC volunteers to explore the Center's operations and learn about strandings and rehabilitation of marine mammals and sea turtles. MARC is part of a network of centers authorized by the National Marine Fisheries Service to rescue and rehabilitate stranded marine mammals. The Center provides unique research and hands-on experience. UNE undergraduates and volunteers have the opportunity to participate in rescue and rehabilitation, as well as research to develop the most effective rehabilitation techniques, explore causes of marine mammal mortality, and understand the state of the marine environment.
University of New England Campus Tour Available upon request A University of New England tour guide will take students on a tour of the Biddeford Campus. Family members and guests are welcome to accompany students on the tour, which focuses on the academic programs, science facilities, and campus living at UNE. Feel free to ask questions about the various academic programs offered, the application process, and what it is like to be a student at the University of New England. Participants are encouraged to wear shoes and clothing appropriate for walking outdoors in winter conditions.
