FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTORPubMed To Replace Ovid MEDLINE in June of 2006

For several years UAMS librarians, along with other librarians throughout the country, have been monitoring the

development of the PubMed database (which includes MEDLINE) provided for free by the National Library ofMedicine (NIH). During the past year, UAMS reference librarians did an in-depth comparison of PubMed and the OvidMEDLINE product to which the Library currently subscribes. After studying the features of both systems that seemmost important to our users, we considered PubMed to be the better option for UAMS for several major reasons. Therefore, we are planning to cancel the Ovid MEDLINE subscription effective July 1, 2006, giving Ovid MEDLINEusers nearly a year for the transition to PubMed.

Some of the reasons we selected PubMed over Ovid MEDLINE are as follows:

Open Accessibility and Life-Long Learning

PubMed is a free resource from the National Library of Medicine that will continue to be available via the Internet tofaculty, students, and staff even after they leave UAMS. In the spirit of life-long learning, students and faculty will beacquiring the skills needed to search a database that will be available wherever they practice their health sciencesprofession.

Ovid Costs and Restrictions

Ovid is a privately-owned system that requires re-negotiations every year as prices continue to climb. Ovid limits thenumber of concurrent users of the Ovid databases and full-text journals based on what a library is able to afford, thuscreating times when popular databases or materials are not accessible. Ovid access is also restricted by license toUAMS faculty, students, and staff only. This has been a troublesome issue at UAMS since access is usually denied toour alumni, emeritus faculty, adjunct faculty, volunteers, and others who do not strictly fall under our license. Thisproblem is exacerbated by the erroneous belief that Ovid is the only option for accessing full-text journals.

Full-Text Journal Articles

In the past the Library purchased full-text journals via Ovid, but this is no longer the case. The vast majority of full-text journals are now licensed directly through publishers providing immediate access to current online articles, usuallywithout restrictions on concurrent users. Full-text articles are equally available through PubMed and Ovid. Also, theejournal list on the Library Website provides access to virtually all of the Library’s full-text journals by journal title orcitation.

Quicker Access and Broader Coverage

PubMed and Ovid (and all other MEDLINE vendors) provide access to records that are indexed and compiled by theNational Library of Medicine. However, records are more quickly available in PubMed, including In-Process recordssearchable by words in the citation and abstract before the full indexing is completed. PubMed also provides abroader coverage than MEDLINE, including Non-Indexed Citations for articles judged to be of importance to healthand life sciences that appear in journals not routinely indexed in MEDLINE.

Although access to Ovid MEDLINE will end in June 2006, access to other Ovid databases, including HAPI, IPA, andCochrane Evidence-Based Medicine files, will continue to be available through Ovid for the foreseeable future.

Beginning immediately, the Library staff will teach PubMed searching skills instead of Ovid in classes offered both onand off campus. The Reference librarians are ready to assist Ovid users in the transition to PubMed individually, insmall groups, or in larger settings. Please contact the Library Reference Desk [email protected] or 686-6734 to obtain PubMed training or assistance.

OUTREACH NEWSUAMS LIBRARIANS EXHIBIT AT NATIONAL CONVENTION

Recently the UAMS Library had a wonderful opportunity to represent the National Library

of Medicine at the 76 th National LULAC Convention held in Little Rock, June 29 – July 1,2005. The League of United Latin American Citizens annual convention is a huge meetingwith approximately 10,000 individuals attending. Commercial exhibitors shared the largeexhibit hall with a health fair, a college fair and job expo. In addition to many educationaland learning opportunities, the exhibit hall was the location of many live performances bydancers and singers.

The keynote speaker for this year’s meeting was President Bill Clinton. Other featuredspeakers included Robert Salazar, Food & Nutrition Service Administrator with the USDepartment of Agriculture; Anna Cabral, U.S. Treasurer; Gloria Estefan, internationallyacclaimed artist; and Governor Mike Huckabee.

The meeting provided a great venue to promote free consumer health and medicalresources available to the public from the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Many ofNLM’s materials are available full-text in Spanish. These included MedlinePlus (disease &conditions, drug information, and interactive tutorials), ToxTown for information on toxicchemical and environmental health risks you might encounter in everyday life, plus otherNLM resources such as Household Products Database, the Genetic Home Reference, etc.

Below are photos of the UAMS Reference Librarians exhibiting at LULAC.

NEW COMPUTERS – NEWOPPORTUNITIES

The Library recently replaced twelve computers

located on the first floor with new PCs that are fasterand easier to use. Replacement of library computers isdone on a rotation basis each year in an attempt toprovide the newest and best technology for our users. The new PCs have faster processors allowing programsto open and load with less wait time.

The new PCs also have read/writeable DVD and CDtechnology. Now you can store at least 600 times moreinformation on a CD than a floppy disk. Based on theantiquated technology of floppy disks and the fact thatmany new PCs today do not come with floppy drives, the Library will be phasing out the use of floppies andfloppy drives over the next three years. The Referencestaff has added a sign to each new PC indicating that itdoes not have a floppy drive available.

The new PCs also come with new digital flat screenmonitors. These monitors take up less desk space andare clearer and sharper than old flat screens. Themonitors also have a USB port on the left hand side ofthe screen. This allows easy access for thumb drives.

The Library does not sell thumb drives or floppy disks, butCD’s are sold at the circulation desk.

HISTORY OF UAMS DISPLAY CENTER OFFICIALLY OPENED

The Library’s Historical Research Center and its History of Medicine Associates are heavily involved in the

continuing operation of the new History of UAMS Display Center on the first floor of the hospital, across from theCollege of Medicine offices.

On Wednesday, August 3rd, the dedication of the Display Center was celebrated with a ribbon cutting and reception.Amanda Saar, Chair of the Historical Research Center as well as Treasurer of the History of Medicine Associates;Sharon Keel, Reference Assistant, and Jonathan Wolfe, PhD, College of Pharmacy were all actively involved inseeing that the festivities went as planned.

Those speaking included E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, Dean of the College of Medicine; I. Dodd Wilson, MD,Chancellor; John Shock, MD, Executive Vice Chancellor; Jonathan Wolfe, PhD, College of Pharmacy and Curator ofthe Display Center, and Richard Clark, MD, President of the History of Medicine Associates. Dr. Clark cut the ribbon, and the Display Center is now officially open. About fifty people attended, many of them faculty as well as membersof the History of Medicine Associates.

This display area was created in order to continue the representation of the history of UAMS that began with theexhibit at the Old State House: “Medical Education at the Old State House 1912-1935, From Flexner to the NewDeal.” That exhibit ran from October of 2001 to September of 2002. After its closing, the absence of a continuingdisplay for the history of UAMS was felt, and the idea of the History of UAMS Display was created.

The construction was funded by Dr. Reece and Dr. Wilson, and the continuing upkeep of the Display Center will besupported by the History of Medicine Associates. The items displayed will change from time to time and represent allof UAMS. If there are aspects of the history of the campus that you would like to see presented, let us know. Inaddition, the next time you are on campus, stop by and admire it!
