Welcome back to all of our staff and students and a big welcome to our new families who have joined us this term.
Over the holiday period I read a number of interesting books and articles.I would like to share with you some information on neuroscience, the study of the brain. A number of myths have been identified and according to the author, have been proven to be false.

Myth 1: Some of us are ‘left - brained’ and some are ‘right - brained,’ and this helps explain differences in how we learn. FALSE. The left and right hemispheres of the brain work together. There is no evidence that people’s learning differs in important ways

based on one hemisphere being more dominant than the other. While it is true that specific hemispheres of the brain are responsible for generating specific functions like speech, creativity etc, it actually takes both hemispheres of the brain to process all of these functions.
Myth 2: We only use 10% of our brains. FALSE. A healthy person uses 100 percent of their brain.
Myth 3: Brain development has finished by the time children reach puberty. FALSE. Brain development continues well into adolescence and adulthood, especially the development of the pre - frontal lobes, which are critical for executive reasoning and decision - making.
Myth 4: Mental capacity is something you are born with and cannot be changed. FALSE. Mental abilities do have a genetic component, but they are also heavily influenced by environmental factors, and rely on adequate experience in order to develop. All of us can develop a growth mindset, no matter what age.
Myth 5: Multitasking - “I’m just good at multi - tasking”. FALSE. The brain can’t attend to two or more attention - rich stimuli simultaneously . According to the author, simply put, multitasking doesn’t work.
Certainly a lot to think about , as long as your thinking occurs with both sides of your brain, using a growth mindset and with a single focus.

Ramadan is the most significant event in the Muslim community where Mus-lims from across the globe fast and strive to become a better human being by seeking the blessings of the Almighty and try to implement the messages of the Quran in their life. Ramadan is a time for worship, reflection, repentance and charity. It is also a time to share food and enjoy gatherings with family, friends and the wider community. Ramadan is not only for fasting, but also to feed the hungry, help the needy, guard our tongue, not to judge others and forgive. That is the spirit of Ramadan. Ramadan Mubarak!

Message from Junior School
Assalamu Alaikum Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Term 2 of 2019. I hope you had a relaxing and fruitful time with family and friends.
As we enter the blessed month of forgiveness, mercy and blessing, I would like to ask
Allah to bless your days during Ramadan with happiness, prosperity and content.
Year 4 students have commenced this term with great enthusiasm and commitment as we
soon celebrate our learning and achievements with the approach of Revision week and
Half Yearly Exams. Students are looking forward to participating in a muster of educational
events that will not only develop their learning and understanding but will also contribute
hugely to their wellbeing and character. This term students will develop strategies to
achieve emotional balance as they attend yet another outstanding Wellbeing Show.
They will also appreciate the relations hip between different living things as they visit the
Botanic Gardens.
Across K - 6, in PDH and CAPA learning areas, students will continue to engage in rich
learning experiences that encourage critical thinking and deep understanding. A wealth
of Visible Thinking Strategies has been incorporated into our programs which will assist in
cultivating well - equipped thinkers of the future driven by our Islamic faith.
This term, students from K - 6 will take the stage once again as they demonstrate PDH
values at m orning assemblies. Check out the latest news in the PDH Values segment in

Year One have been practicing their Maths skills by using objects to create two - digit numbers and identifying place value.Year One:

School HighlightTwo of Unity Grammar’s robotics teams, STEM Cells Y and STEM Cells Z, travelled to Houston, Texas, during the school holidays to compete at the FIRST Lego League International Championship. After months of preparation, the teams competed against over a hundred oth-er teams from around the world. STEM Cells Z won 3rd Place for the Robot Programming Award, a phenomenal achievement for the team in their rook-ie season! A big congratulations to the team and their coaches!
During their visit to the USA, the teams had the opportunity to visit ILM College, another Islamic School, and interact with the students there. They were also fortunate enough to visit the NASA Space Center where we got to learn about the innovative technol-ogy and equipment NASA used into orbit, astronauts who landed on the moon and space suits from the past and present. The teams also attended an exciting live NBA basketball game. After the competition, the teams and their families enjoyed some much-de-
served leisure time and sight-seeing in Los Angeles.
It was an honour for the teams to rep-resent Australia and Unity Grammar on an international stage. The experience was an amazing one for them, creating memories that will never be forgotten.

UmrahUnity Grammar recently visited Mecca and Madinah to complete the Umrah pilgrimage. Students visited key landmarks including Mt Uhud, Al Baqia, Masjid Quba, Arafah and much more. Students also enjoyed a stopover in the UAE and visited key landmarks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi including the Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

Ramadan Food HampersHe is not a believer who eats to his full while his neighbour remains hungry near him. (Baihaqi) In the spirit of Ramadan, Unity Grammar today distributed 76 Ramadan food hampers to needy individuals and families in Sydney. To be caring, compassionate and giving is all part of the Unity Grammar experience.
Public Speaking @ UGCThis year, the English Faculty is preparing students for the chance to participate in the UN Voice Competition which empowers students to discuss topics related to world issues and present their research, ideas and solutions in a stimulat-ing way, to a large audience. Students will appreciate that public speaking is all about communication. What they say and how they say it will determine the effectiveness of their ideas and the influence they’ll have on their audience.
To this point, students prepared a speech over the school holidays about how extinction of animals can occur and how likely it is to occur by 2060. Students presented with such vibrancy and confidence and shared their ideas to a class full of students. It was their first official public speaking rehearsal and they all did wonderfully well. The following students will be participating in school public speaking initi-atives and a select few will be chosen to come along to the UN for a more demanding aspect of the competition. They are: Maysa Maarbani, Ciraj Alazzam, Marwa Aamir, Mariam El-Chahrouk, Sara Arbili, Mohammed Arja, Kareem Taleb, Jannah Hijazi, Nahida Hafza and Eman Hafda.
Students will be assisted and supported by students in year 10. These students will help with research, voice projec-
tion, preparing and writing speeches, using ICT for creating vlogs/videos and creating podcasts to spread their mes-sage and solution. They are: Fatemah Sakar, Jasmine Ajaj, Ruqaya Ghazawy, Fatima Ghamrawi and Lena El-Merhebe.
Together, with myself, we make the UGC Public Speaking Team! So show us some support when you see us around and follow our journey to the UN to represent UGC as fierce competitors in Public Speaking.

PDHPE
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Great to see our girls particpating in Phyical Activities. Girls are enjoying Oz Tag and Basketball during Term 2 for sport.
Parent and caregivers were invited to the school for Parent & Teacher Interviews on Wednesday 1st & Thursday 2nd of May. Parent and caregivers were given student interim reports for years 7 – 11 and Half Yearly Report for Year 12 students. It was a great opportunity for parental engagement, meeting the different subject tecahers, getting feedback about their childs progress and stratgeties for improvement.
Thank you for all the staff for attending this important event and look forward for your participation in the future events.
