A NEWRY teenager whoselegs have been amputated in abid to save his life is astound-ing doctors with his fightingspirit.

Ryan Cinnamond, a student of StPaul’s High School, underwent thedrastic surgery after he was struckdown by an aneurysm on Thursday.

Speaking to the Democrat yester-day, his brother Danny said thatalthough still critical and heavilysedated, the 15-year-old has managedto move and even open his eyes.

“We were warned he might notmake it past Thursday night,” Danny

said. “But he is fighting and fightingand we’re all feeling hopeful.”

Ryan, from Castlekeele Heights,began feeling ill on Wednesday nightand deteriorated so fast he had to betaken to Daisy Hill by ambulance.Doctors there diagnosed an aneurysm– a balloon-like swelling in the arterywall - and he was quickly transferredto the City Hospital in Belfast.

But on the way there, the aneurysmburst.

Ryan, who at this stage had nosteady pulse, was given just a 10 percent chance of survival.

The heartrending decision was latertaken to amputate his legs to preventthe release of lethal toxins into his sys-tem.

HIJACKMUM’STERRORTHE mother of a young teenand baby girl who werehijacked by car thieves saysher greatest fear was that thechildren would be killed in acrash, writes Martin Hearty.

The woman’s car – with her14-year-old son and his seven-month-old sister in the back –was stolen when she stoppedat a filling station shop inWarrenpoint on Thursdaynight.

The thief was more than amile down the road before henoticed the boy and his babysister in the back seat andpulled up his hood to avoidbeing identified.

The teenager begged theman to stop and let him andhis sister out before the thiefeventually pulled over and leftthem on the side of the dualcarriageway at Narrow Water.

Speaking to the Democratyesterday, his mother revealedhow her son got out of the carbefore unhooking his baby sis-ter’s car seat and lifting it out.

The teenager then carriedhis sister - wearing only herpyjamas - back towards thefilling station, before a mem-ber of the public picked up thechildren and took them backto their mother.

Their mother, who is fromBurren, said she feared theworst.
