NEW CIP-INSTALLATION FOR NESTLÉ

Cleaning process installations is the order of the day, especially within the food and pharmaceutical industry. Cleaning (removing the product residue) is not only important for safeguarding the product quality and safety, it also extends the life span of the process installation.

RENEWING THE CIP-INSTALLATION

Cleaning process installations is the order of the day, especially within the food and pharmaceutical industry. Cleaning (removing the product residue) is not only important for safeguarding the product quality and safety, it also extends the life span of the process installation.

By integrating the cleaning process in the process installation and by automating this process, the time of cleaning can be cut down and unnecessary production stops can be avoided. Cleaning In Place (CIP) is very suitable for this. CIP is an automated cleaning method, based on cleaning the whole installation or a part of it. This can all take place without disassembling or opening the installation.

Nestlé Nunspeet wished to replace the CIP installation for the purpose of cleaning their “starters” department by a CIP installation which exists out of 5 CIP-tanks and 3 CIP-strings. Agidens has carried out the project on Turn Key base and took care of the following project parts:

» Mechanical engineering » Supplying and installing iFix licence

» Supplying tanks and equipment » Testing (FAT / static test / SAT) and start-up

» Mechanical assembly and piping systems » Documentation / maintenance plan

» Electrical engineering » Project management

» Electrical installation work » Training operators and technical staff

» Software engineering (PLC and SCADA) » CE

CHALLENGES

The quality of a CIP system is determined by the way the “5 T’s” function: Temperature, Technology, Turbulence, Time en Titration. On top of that Nestlé Nunspeet decided that the CIP-installation has to

» be placed on a new location; » have more CIP fluid capacity (tanks); » meet the high safety standard; » be a good ‘eye catcher’; » be fully parameterizable; » be ready for the future; » be able to be expanded; » be monitored, traceability is a re-quirement in this; » be easily operated by the opera-tor (SCADA); » be accessible for the operator and mechanics.

1.PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

» Nestlé is a worldwide active enterprise and has his own stan-dards; the project has to be carried out in compliance with these standards.

» The quality of cleaning of the CIP installation has to be secured.

» Integrating flexibility within the automation is necessary; chang-ing and extending the installation has to be simple.

» With regard to the - for the food industry - applicable law and legislation, the systems need to safeguard the possibility of track-ing & tracing.

» A production stop has to be prevented as much as possible (or in exceptional cases minimalized). A service department which can be reached 24 hours a day and 7 days a week is therefore indispendable.

2.THE PROGRESS

The project was delivered on time and meeting all requirements set by Nestlé. We therefore followed a very strickt planning:

During a short production stop Agidens started on Monday with disconnecting and disassembling the old CIP-installation and con-nected the new CIP-installation. On Tuesday Agidens started to test all separate circuits, in the course of which several parameters and times were adjusted. On Thursday afternoon the first circuits were validated, on Friday morning the installation was handed over to Nestlé and the first whey was received.

3.RESULTS

Because of an excellent cooperation with the project team of Nestlé and the dedication of Agidens people, the new installa-tion came into operation without problems. Nestlé now has a new and modern ‘State of the art’ CIP-installation which is self-cleaning and self-validating, supplies better quality and is easy to expand. Nestlé Nunspeet is a very satisfied user of the renewed CIP-installation.
