Netballisanexciting,fastandskilfulgameoffaircontest.Itisagameinwhichtwoteamsofsevenplayerseachstrivetokeeporgainpossessionoftheball.
Theteamwiththeball,throughrunning,jumping,throwingandcatching,attemptstomovetheballintoitsgoalcirclefromwhereagoalmaybescored,whiletheopposingteamusesdefensivemovementsandstrategiestopreventthisandtogainpossession.Theteamwiththegreaternumberofgoalsisthewinnerofthematch.
Playershavespecifiedareasinwhichtheycanmove.Playrestartsaftereachgoalwithteamshavingalternatepossession.
TheRulesarebasedonthecorevaluesofequalopportunity,fairplayandrespectforanopponent’sskillandsafety.
• ItistheresponsibilityofplayerstoensurethattheyarephysicallyandtechnicallypreparedinamannerthatenablesthemtoplaytheGame,complywiththeRulesandparticipatesafelyinasportingandfairmanner.Thisincludesrespondingtorulingsmadebytheumpiresandadjustingplayaccordingly.

3.1.1CourtThecourtisrectangularinshapeandislevelandfirm.Thesurfaceshouldbewooden(preferablysprungwooden)butmayconsistofothermaterialprovidedthatitissafetoplayon.
(i) Thetwolongersidesarecalledsidelinesandmeasure30.5m(100ft).
(ii) Thetwoshortersidesarecalledgoallinesandmeasure15.25m(50ft).
(iii) Twolinesparalleltothegoallinesdividethecourtintothreeequalareas.Theselinesarecalledtransverselines.Themiddleareaiscalledthecentrethirdandthetwoendareasarethegoalthirds.

(i) Abenchzoneislocatedimmediatelyadjacenttothefieldofplay.Theofficialbench,umpires’benchandteambenchesarealllocatedononesideofthecourtinthebenchzone.
(ii) Theplayingenclosureconsistsofthefieldofplayandthebenchzone.Entrytotheplayingenclosureduringamatchislimitedtothosepersonswithofficialeventaccreditation.

5.1TEAM(i) Beforethestartofamatch,thenamesofallplayersandteam
officialsmustbeprovidedtothescorers.Eachteamnamesoneplayerascaptain.
(ii) Duringamatch,aminimumoffiveandmaximumofsevenplayersfromateammaybeonthecourtatanyonetime,oneofwhommustplayasCentre.(a) Ifateamdoesnothave5playersavailabletheumpireswill awardthematchtotheopposingteam.(b) Ifateamhasmorethan7playersonthecourt,additional playersareimmediatelysentfromthecourt.Sanction: Penalty pass where the ball was when play was stopped and a player from the infringing team allowed in the playing area stands out of play.
(c) Iftheadditionalplayersdelayleavingthecourt,theumpirewill penalisetheinfringingplayersfordelayingplay.
(iii) Eachteamisallocatedateambenchwhereteamofficialsandbenchplayersarelocatedduringplay.Benchplayersmayleavetheteambenchduringplayforavalidreason(suchastowarmup).
5.1.1Players(i) Duringamatchplayersmustwear: (a) Registeredplayinguniformandsuitablesportsfootwear(spiked
solesarenotallowed). (b) Playingpositioninitials150mm(6in)highwhichmustbe

(d) Intheeventthatthecaptainisnotonthecourt,anon-court captainwillbeadvisedtotheumpires.

5.1.2TeamOfficials(i) Ateammayhaveuptofiveteamofficials.Thesewillincludeacoach
andatleastoneprimarycareperson.(ii)Aprimarycareperson: (a) Mustbequalifiedtodiagnoseandtreatinjuryorillness(for
example,doctororphysiotherapist). (b) Mustwearidentificationasspecifiedbytheeventorganiser(for
exampleanarmband). (c) Mustnothaveanyotherroles(includingasaplayer). (d) Ispermittedonthecourtduringastoppageforinjury/illnessofa
playerorbloodissues. (e) Mustadvisetheumpiresifaplayeristooill/injuredtobe
removedfromthecourtwithin30secondsand/oriffurther assistanceisrequired.
5.2 MATCHOFFICIALSThematchofficialsaretwoumpiresandareserveumpire.
(i) Thematchofficials: (a) Wearclothingthatisdistinctfromtheteams’playinguniforms
andsuitablesportsfootwear. (b) Areresponsibleforensuringthefieldofplay(includingthe
goalposts)andtheballconformto[Rule3]beforeplaystarts andthroughoutamatch.
(c) Beforeplaystarts,checktheplayersoffthecourttoensurethey meettherequirementsof[Rule5.1.1(i)and(iv)].

5.2.1UmpiresTheumpirescontrolamatchaccordingtotheRulesanddecideanymatternotcoveredbythem.Theirdecisionsarefinalandaregivenwithoutappeal.
(i) Afterthecaptainshavenotifiedtheumpiresoftheresultofthetossforgoalendorfirstcentrepass,theumpirestossforgoalend.Theumpirewinningthetosscontrolsthesidelinenearertheofficialbenchandthegoalendtotherightwhenfacingthecourt.Eachumpirecontrolsthesamehalfofthecourtthroughoutthematch.
(ii) Anumpire’swhistle: (a) Startsandendseachquarter/half. (b) Restartsplayafteragoalhasbeenscored. (c) Indicateswhenaninfringementispenalised. (d) Maybeusedtoindicatewhentheballisoutofcourtif
clarificationisneeded. (e) Signalswhenthetimekeepersaretoholdtimeandwhento
restarttimingplay.
(iii) Theumpiresworkco-operativelyandmayappealtoeachotherfordecisions.Anumpiremustbereadyforsuchanappealatalltimes.
(iv) Eachumpirecontrolsandgivesdecisionsforonehalfofthecourtincludingthegoallineexceptasprovidedforin(v)and(vi)belowand[Rule6.1.1(v)].Forthispurposethelengthofthecourtisdividedinhalfacrossthecentrefromsidelinetosideline.

13.2FOULPLAYFoulplayisanythingaplayerdoeswithinthefieldofplaythatiscontrarytotheletterandspiritoftheRulesoftheGameordoesnotmeetacceptedstandardsofgoodsportsmanship.Itincludesunfairplay,dangerousplayandmisconduct.
13.2.1UnfairPlayAplayermustnotplayunfairly.Thisincludesdelayingplay,intentionalinfringing(includingwhentheballisnotinplay),persistentinfringing,intimidationorretaliation.
(i) Delayingplay Aplayermaynotintentionallywastetimeordelayplay.Sanction:Penalty pass which is advanced (unless the non-infringing team is disadvantaged) and the player is cautioned.
1. The sanction may be advanced up to half a third (this may be to inside the goal circle if the infringement is in the goal third).
2. The infringer stands out of play at the new position. If this is in an offside area the infringer moves to the edge of this area.
(ii) Intentionalinfringing Aplayermustnotintentionallyinfringeanyrules.Sanction:Penalty pass and the player is cautioned. If the playercontinues to infringe either a warning will be given or, ifconsidered appropriate, the umpire will suspend the player.

(ii) Causingaplayerintheairtofallbymovingintothepathofthatplayer.

APPENDIXD:VARIATIONSFOROTHERLEVELSOFPLAY
VariationstotheRulesmaybemadeformatchesthatarenotforinternationalplay.Theextentofthesevariationswilldependonthelevelofcompetition.Forelitelevelcompetitionsitislikelythatfewchangeswillbemade,whileformatchesatlowerlevelschangesmaybemoreextensive.
Decisionsregardingvariationswillnormallybemadebythecontrollingauthorityforthecompetition.AnyvariationsshouldmaintaintheintegrityoftheGameonthecourtandshouldnotchangethewayitisplayed.Thefollowingaresomeexamplesofvariationsthatmightbeused.
(i) Teams (a) Teamsmaybemadeupofplayersofthesamegenderormaybe
mixed. (b) Teamofficialsmaybefewerthanspecifiedandmaytherefore
undertakeseveralduties.However,primarycareperson/smustnot beplayersanditispreferablethattheydonotholdanyotherrole.
(ii) Equipment (a) Courtsmaybeoutdoorswheredifferentsurfacematerialsmaybe
used.
(b) Whileinternationalplayuses3-plyballs,alowergradeofball (2-ply)maybeusedatlowerlevels.2-plyballswillusuallyhave alowerinflationlevelof62-69kPa(9-10psi).Formatchesplayed outdoorstheballwillusuallyhavealowerinflationlevel.
