DET NORSKE VERITAS
1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
Nauticus Machinery v11.2 is a minor update to the v11.0 release in March 2012 and
the v11.1 release in June 2012.
This Release Note gives an overview of the high level enhancements introduced in
Nauticus Machinery v11.0 as well as the enhancements and defects that have been
fixed v11.1 and v11.2.
2 New enhancements and fixed defects
40+ enhancements and 15+ defects have been fixed in Nauticus Machinery v11.2.
2.1 New calculation tools introduced in v11.0
Nauticus Machinery v11.0 contains the following new calculation tools:
- Nauticus Propeller Blade based on DNV Classification Note 41.5
- Nauticus Gear Rating “Ice” based on DNV Classification Note 51.1
- Nauticus Shaft Fatigue “Ice” based on DNV Classification Note 51.1
The new shaft and gear tools can be considered as extensions to the current tools, as
they cover the new Baltic (FSICR) and Polar Ice Class Rules.
2.2 Nauticus Machinery Workflow Manager
The Nauticus Machinery Workflow Manager is the starting point to all calculation
tools in Nauticus Machinery. In previous releases, both a “lite” and an “advanced”
configuration of the Workflow Manager could be selected during installation. It was
also possible to switch these profiles runtime. In v11.0 the two profiles have been
merged into one common profile.
Summary of the most important changes in the Workflow Manager:
- The application will automatically jump back to the “Projects and calculations”
task when the activated calculation is closed
- Improved performance for remote databases
- New “configuration-dialog” appearing first time you enter the “Projects and
calculations” task
- Changed column names and order in the project list
- Improved “send calculation by email” enhancement with direct interface to
Microsoft Outlook
- New “function tree” where calculations on the same project can be organized
in more detailed levels/folders
2.2.1 Documentation and examples
The “Getting started” task contains up to date user manuals and example models for
all the calculation tools. It also contains script-examples for the Nauticus Torsional

Vibration and Nauticus Shaft Alignment tools (as these tools have got a scripting
interface). In addition there are some new quick-guides for Nauticus Torsional
Vibration and Nauticus Shaft Alignment. The purpose of these documents is to give
the user a quick introduction to all the tools. It is recommended to read the quick-
starts and look at the example models/scripts first, and then use the user manuals as
reference later.
2.2.2 Library for diesel engine excitations and mass-elastic data
The purpose of the engine library is to make it easier to save and reuse typical engine
data that is used over and over again for various models.
Such data can be:
- Standardized engine excitation files from MAN and Wärtsilä
- Standardized mass elastic files from the above mentioned designers
This kind of data is usually available on the engine manufacturer’s extranet web-
portals, but the engine library introduces a more efficient way to reuse such data in the
torsional vibration models.
Engine excitation files (also called harmonics) are the recommended way to specify
the excitation data in a steady state torsional vibration analysis. It is a more accurate
method compared to the empirical approach which is also offered in the Nauticus
Torsional Vibration tool.
With the mass-elastic files you can easily build up a complete diesel engine model in
Nauticus Torsional Vibration with few mouse clicks.

2.2.3 Company logo in reports and auto-recovery of model files
It is possible to specify the company name and logo, so that it appears in all the
printouts from the various calculation tools (default is DNV).
The auto-recovery function can be used to recover models that have been lost due to
an unexpected shutdown of the computer.

2.3 Nauticus Gear Rating and Faceload calculation tools
There are no changes in the Nauticus Gear Faceload tool, but the Nauticus Gear
Rating tool has been upgraded to calculate according to DNV Classification Note 51.1
“Ice strengthening of propulsion machinery” and the DNV Rules for Baltic and Polar
ice class.

2.4 Nauticus Shaft Alignment calculation tool
The Nauticus Shaft Alignment tool has been subjected to major changes both in the
user interface and in the solver.
For the user interface there is a new property grid on the right-hand side and the
number of pop-up dialogues has been reduced. Changes in the model are applied by
selecting a model element and specifying the new parameters in the property grid. All
the user interface actions are scripted (JavaScript-syntax), so it is possible to “play-
back” scripts to create complete models. The scripting capabilities are very powerful
and provide an efficient way of building models from scratch. The “Getting started”
task also contains some scripting examples for typical systems.
The solver has been rewritten and is now based on the finite element method. The
layout of the various results have been changed and improved. In addition the
optimization enhancement has been rewritten.
The new version is backward compatible with v5.5 (use the “Data convert” function)
and v8.0 or later (just open the old models directly and they will be converted).
Summary of the most important changes in Nauticus Shaft Alignment:
- Bearings are de-coupled from the shaft geometry
- Property script instead of input-dialogues
- Improvements in charts
- New finite element based solver
- Changes in the results (layout)
- Support for scripting

2.5 Nauticus Shaft Fatigue calculation tool
The new version of Nauticus Shaft Fatigue has got support for DNV Classification
Note 51.1 “Ice strengthening of propulsion machinery” in addition to the existing
Class Note 41.1 (Main class). The new tool is now capable of calculated safety factors
and accumulated fatigue required by the new Polar and Baltic ice class rules.
New ice class related input and output fields have been added:

2.6 Nauticus Torsional Vibration calculation tool
The Nauticus Torsional Vibration tool have much more capabilities compared to the
2006-version. The user interface was totally redesigned in the v10.0 release and we
have focused a lot on providing a very user friendly graphic modeler and result viewer.
The solver is much more powerful and the performance is improved significantly. The
new tool is capable of handling everything from simple electric propulsion systems up
to more sophisticated systems with several engines, complex gears, propeller lines and
power take off (PTO). Due to the handling of more advanced systems we have
introduced scripting-capabilities in the new tool. This is a very powerful and efficient
way to build up models. There are also some functions to import standardized mass
elastic files from the engine manufacturer to build up a model much more efficiently.
Summary of the most important changes in Nauticus Torsional Vibration:
- Printing of the mass elastic view
- Stiffness and inertia calculator
- Constant speed and variable MIP, new load case for generator set
- Add more details to the report
- Improved handling of linear elastic couplings
- Show barred speed range and MCR speed on stress plots
- Move buttons for report and printout (more user-friendly)

2.7 Nauticus Crankshaft Fatigue calculation tool
Nauticus Crankshaft Fatigue calculates the safety against fatigue failure in pin and
journal fillets and in oil bores, as well as safety against slippage for semibuilt
crankshafts.
The Nauticus Crankshaft Fatigue tool is based on a version of DNV Classification
Note 41.2 that is not official yet. The current version of the tool shall not be used in
production, but solely for test-purpose until the new Classification Note is approved.
Summary of the most important changes in Nauticus Crankshaft Fatigue:
- View results in FlowDocument instead of result fields
- Show allowable nominal torsional stress result
2.8 Nauticus Propeller Blade tool
A new calculation tool for propeller blade is available in Nauticus Machinery v11.0.
The new tool calculates according to DNV Rules and Classification Note 41.5.
