Dressage SA, Show Horse and Carriage Driving came together to organise a combined Youth Development weekend held at Danson Dressage Equestrian Park on 4th and 5th of January. The coach was Brett Parbery who was well received across all disciplines. Saturday was for dressage rider lessons, with an open forum and dinner at the completion of the day. The open forum and shared dinner proved to be a good opportunity for young riders to speak with Brett and get insight on how to build resilience, pick a suitable coach and what to look for in a horse. Our young riders were a little shy to start with but once they started asking questions, they were great! Brett provided organisers with positive feedback that SA has very talented up and coming young riders with the potential to go all the way with guidance and support. The Youth Development Scholarship winner will be announced at the ESA Awards Night on 1 February 2020. DSA would like to thank the ESA board for accessing the grant that funded the Youth Development weekend. Have you entered for your HOTY awards?? The first HOTY event is at MCDC Dawn and Dusk. Enter HOTY via Nominate: www.nominate.com.au/EquestDN/Event.aspx?event=17074&eventlist=2 A reminder about the new 2020 FEI Tests and change: Clubs, Judges and Riders please make sure you are using the 2020 FEI tests! It is probably a good idea to print new tests from the website at each competition as there have been further changes to the Inter B. All FEI Tests can be found here: https://inside.fei.org/fei/your-role/organisers/dressage/tests.

If you have not already seen it, ESA has released the Governance Review and it is available on the ESA website. Should you have any question please direct them to the ESA Board and ESA Manager. There have been further changes to the National Dressage Rules. Particularly the AOR rules. 4.6.1. 2020 National Dressage Rules Final: https://www.equestrian.org.au/sites/default/files/2020_EA_National_Dressage_Rules-Clean_Version%20-%20Final_8-1-20_1.pdf Dressage SA Squads will not be undergoing a mid year review for 2019 / 2020. However there will be changes that will come out in March 2020 for new Squad criteria. This will be communicated via Facebook, Moving Forward and possibly email to members who have dressage cards.
For any updates please keep a watch on Dressage Facebook page or check the ESA website.
Dressage SA Committee
Dressage SA Committee Update
4. A / B / C Seminar in early November, date to be confirmed. This year we will combine Advanced level (C level) with the FEI levels A and B. Please keep an eye out for the date as we work to confirm the date and presenter for this Seminar.
5. Young Horse: Due to the unfortunate stress of bushfires we cancelled the planned January Young Horse Seminar and have moved it to Sunday November 29th. We are very fortunate to have secured Sue Cunningham for this Seminar and look forward to a great day of YH activity with her.
Other News: • The current three-year cycle for Judge re-accreditation will
be completed at the end of 2020. The form to record activity has changed significantly, please review in this edition of Moving Forward (and on the EA website, under “Education – Officials - Resources”). Seminars, workshops and competitions that you have judged are the only requirements. No more “points” for other activities such as pencilling, committee work, etc. Requirements have been eased a little as each competition judged counts as a separate activity, rather than needing to record events of 1 day.
• The 2020 version of the Dressage Rules is on the EA website. It is essential for all judges, stewards and riders to be aware of the rules. The Marked version will highlight changes.
• The FEI Inter B test has had a slight amendment to Movement 10 which now goes to V (it is now a mirror image of movement 4).
• Judges’ Workshop: An upcoming lecture by Dr Helen Davies has been approved as a Judges’ Workshop. The topic is “Training Scales and their relationship to the functional anatomy of the horse”, 7 pm, Friday 14 Feb 2020 at the Hahndorf Old Mill, 98 Main Rd, Hahndorf. Please see the HorseSA website or the Dressage SA Facebook page for details to purchase tickets.
ESA Dressage Judges Committee
Thanks to Shield Insurance Brokers for their support and sponsorship of
the Mt Barker ESA Dressage Judges’ F / G Seminar with Felicity Yuncken
February 2020 The recent bushfires have caused a difficult time and much loss for many members of the dressage community in SA and Australia and it is a time to acknowledge the importance of support for those around us. Recovery can be a long road, but keeping the familiarity of the usual routines that give us happiness and purpose will help, including those with equine partners! With this in mind, the plans for 2020 are in progress (but a bit delayed).
Judges Education Opportunities for 2020 Dates for Dressage Judge Seminars for 2020 have been set for most levels, please mark these in your diary. All judges at any level, riders, coaches and observers welcome (no charge). Judges can attend a seminar that is not their level and have this recorded as a “workshop” for their reaccreditation. 1. F / G Seminar on 7th March (Saturday) with Felicity Yuncken
(EA “A” level Judge and JE) at the Mt Barker ESA Office (morning) and Tilling Hill (afternoon). Registration is at 8:30 am for a 9:00 am start at Mt Barker for the theory session and 1:00 pm onwards at Tilling Hill for the practical session. This will be an ideal opportunity for any Judge who wants to shadow judge or sit-in on the next day (8th March) at Adelaide Hills Dressage Club, Strathalbyn as Mentors will be available at Preliminary and Novice levels. SVDC also have a competition the following weekend (15th March) and have indicated they will also support Judge education with Mentors available for shadow judging and sit-in activities. We hope this will help new and upgrading Judges to complete the majority of their pre-requisites over one week and be ready to go! Please advise Liz Duncan of your intention to attend so we can have resources available for all ([email protected]). Or come along at the last minute - you are still welcome!
2. E / F / G Seminar on 22 - 23rd May at Naracoorte, with
Felicity Yuncken (EA “A” level Judge and JE). Please watch the MSEDC website and DSA Facebook page for details of times and the venue. The contact person is Sue Thornley ([email protected]). The Club competition on May 24th is also an opportunity for shadow Judging and sit-in activities.
3. E / D Seminar on 7th June (Sunday). This Seminar will be
run on the Sunday after the Dressage SA Fundraiser competition at McLaren Park Equestrian Centre, McLaren Flat. During the competition on Saturday 6th June there will be opportunities for those Judges wishing to shadow judge or sit-in with Kim Thomas, the visiting Interstate Judge Educator. On Sunday Kim Thomas will then run a D / E Judges’ Seminar with a theory and practical session to cater for Judges at Elementary (E level) and Medium (D level) for reaccreditation or upgrading.
Dressage Judge Activities Update
It has been a busy start to the year for ESA, with a number of changes in the pipelines based on last year’s governance review. The Board received a thorough report from independent consultant David Fishel of Positive Solutions, with a number of key recommendations for improving our organisation’s governance and structure going forward. ESA is grateful to the Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing for providing a grant for us to undertake the review. As part of the grant, the Board also submitted an implementation plan, which will guide us to make the recommended changes from the report. The Board did accept all but those suggestions that do not align with National and International practices, and where further clarification is required. The Governance Review report is available on our website: www.sa.equestrian.org.au/sites/default/files/ESA%20Governance%20Review%20Final%20Report%20%28reissued%2019-11-19%29.pdf. ESA is always looking for ways to support our members and provide valuable services to the equestrian community. In early January, ESA had a measuring bay surveyed in Mount Pleasant, in order to meet EA’s strict measuring standards and offer those members in the Northern areas a more convenient facility to have their horses measured. On January 12, a combined measuring day between ESA and Show Horse Council – SA was facilitated at Mount Pleasant, with positive feedback from those who attended.
2020 Is Measuring Up To Be A Successful Year for ESA
Our second multi-discipline clinic was held on the 24th and 25th of January at Kirkcaldy Park for riders of all ages and levels. Areas of focus were for Dressage / flatwork, groundwork, Jumping, Cross Country, Carriage Driving and Vaulting. Multi-discipline clinics are popular and well received by riders and coaches as a convenient opportunity to develop skills and learn something new. For up to date information on upcoming clinics and events, please check our website and follow the ESA Facebook page.

President’s Report
Our thoughts and sincere sympathy to all those affected by the horrendous Cuddle Creek and Kangaroo Island fires. Just a reminder that in the event of a forecast Catastrophic day the Strathalbyn Polo and Recreation Grounds are open and available for anyone to take refuge with their horses until it is safe to return to their properties. Hopefully it won't be necessary in the near future but there is still a way to go for Summer!!! The early bout of extreme hot weather unfortunately resulted in the cancellation of our December competition. What a contrast it was to our August competition - cancelled due to wet, slippery conditions. Our AGM also had to be postponed as the scheduled date fell on the Catastrophic December day as well. We rescheduled for Friday 25 January which passed by the time of this publication. Please keep your fingers crossed that the weather will be kind to us for our Combined Training and Unrestricted Dressage competition in February. We extend a big Thank You to both Wayne Matten for agreeing to build the Showjumping course and to Stuart Platt who will be our Jump Judge on the day.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Welcome back!
February marks the return of dressage to the Clare Valley Region and what better way to start
the year but to hold our first Competitive / Participant / Closed Unrestricted Competition!
On the 16th of February CVDC will host two Official A and B Level Judges, Helen Whittle and
Pat Hutchens, allowing our club to offer Advanced Competitive Competition for the first time.
For those of you who haven't already booked your flights to Melbourne for the Master Class
with Ingrid Klimke, why not venture to the Clare Valley for a picturesque day of Dressage!
This year is set to be an exciting one, with competitions and training days including Lucy
Williams in May, and Ruth Schneeberger visiting monthly.
2020 also promises an upgrade of the oval surface, with hopefully (weather permitting and the
moons aligning), a re-seeding of the grassed area inside the main arena at the Clare
Showgrounds. We all anxiously await the progress in this area.
Once again, happy riding and we hope to see you out and about with your ponies in the near
future.
December Christmas Competition In December the Club held its Christmas competition, which included Freestyles. This allowed
competitors the opportunity to develop and ride a Freestyle test from Preparatory to Novice
level.
There were some wonderful tests completed by our youth riders and senior members. Once
again a super effort was made by riders to wear a costume to suit their chosen music / theme.
Pictures are to follow. The music and outfits really capped off a wonderful day of dressage.
Well done to Alex, Lisa, Phoebe and Kiera for taking the time to put these together. Also thank
you to Pat Mann for stepping in to judge at the last minute when we had to postpone the
competition due to 40 degree heat.

Story Sharing
So here is a thought ... a while ago we discussed the differences between some of our “training
venues” for example. My place. Where I train my pony 5 days a week (ie. more like 3, if I am
lucky). At our competitions there are always so many stories being shared amongst riders of the
challenges we face to get outside and train our ponies. So I thought I would share one of my
stories and some of the challenges of riding on our farm ...
We live on the side of a hill and we have the most amazing view of the cropping farmland in the
Mid North. At the moment it is dry stubble and red dirt but it has a beauty of its own. Our farm
is a medium size business and is family operated. It has been in the family since it was settled in
1917. It grew from the labors of the heavy horse and used to have two teams of draught horses
completing the work. Hence, my family hates horses …
We moved to the current homestead six years ago and after twelve months of riding around on
the side of a hill, similar to the slopes at Falls Creek or Mount Hotham ski fields, it was time for an
arena. So, when the guys came to dig a pit for the new septic, I sneakily booked them in to
excavate my 20 x 40 m arena. The arena was built using our local farm trucks and tractors. It’s
no elite venue but it has definitely helped with my training. The satisfaction of carting all of the
sand and gravel myself was also inspiring.
The daily challenges I face with riding now are not the side of the hill but the constant “busy”
nature of our farm business. My recent training session was marred by lambs being loaded onto
freight from our feedlot. There is nothing like the noise of sheep running up the aluminium
loading ramp and onto a large B-Double truck, which is 100 m up the hill behind a row of gum
trees, to upset the sensitive pony I am riding. The noise can be likened to running a stick against
corrugated iron. Let’s just say it’s character building and leave it at that.
One day this will help to create a bombproof pony ... I’m just waiting for that day ... TBC

2020 Calendar Clare Valley Dressage Club
The Clare Valley Dressage Club was
formed in 2017 by a group of riding
enthusiasts who wanted an Adult
Riding Club in the Clare Valley
Region. The purpose of our Club is to
provide a safe and nurturing
environment for riders to experience
dressage. The Club endeavors to host
Competitive competitions annually to
allow its members opportunity to
ride at State and National levels.
Training days and regular coaching
session are available to all CVDC
riders.
From The Committee
The competition year at Mount Crawford started with a busy day.
Four arenas were in operation to conduct the Horseland Mt Barker
MCDC 2020 Club Championships. Interstate Judge Jane Ventura and
a great line-up of local Judges judged
tests from Prep to Small Tour FEI.
Congratulations to all the Champions.
Dawn and Dusk 2020
The light towers are all ready for action
after a successful test recently. This
Dusk and Dawn is shaping up to be our biggest one yet and we have
had to import a fourth Judge from Interstate!! It’s also a Horse of
the Year Event with the FEI tests scheduled over the dinner break.
There will be trade stands and licenced catering making it worth a
visit even if you aren't riding, so mark the day on your calendar, if
you haven't already.
Two of our Interstate judges, Virginia Creed and
Wendy Barker, are staying on for the training day on
Sunday the 9th. This training day is open for a once-
off to DSA Squad members and of course to MCDC
members.
After two full-on months we will be looking forward to a quieter
March CUR day before it all begins again in readiness for the State
Championships. March’s tests will be the Bs and Cs for those riders
looking to have a practice in preparation for the States.

Training Days
Our December Training Day ended the year with a fun day of Working Equitation followed by a Mini-Competition. It was a very successful and enjoyable day. Congratulations to everyone who entered, the improvements that everyone made throughout the day were wonderful to see. Thanks to our instructors and judges on the day: Kass Dalitz, Viv Aarons and Tina Grech. Everyone who participated had so much fun.
We would like to acknowledge Two Wells Fodder Store and Hopkins Saddlery for their kind donations of prizes on the day, as well as all the TD Sub-Committee members who have also donated prizes.
We will once again have Interstate instructors on February 9th after the Dawn and Dusk Competition. Virginia Creed and Wendy Barker coaching both private and group lessons. Both are EA “A” level judges: Wendy is a FEI 4* Judge and Level 2 Dressage Specialist while Virginia is an FEI 3* Judge and Level 3 Dressage Specialist. Both Wendy and Virginia are very approachable and are passionate about helping riders, regardless of their standard, to improve their riding.

Cudlee Creek Fires
Unfortunately the end of 2019 and the start of 2020 has been quite traumatic for much of our Hills and Kangaroo Island community. The long road to recovery has started for livestock and property owners impacted by the Cudlee Creek fire, which raced through the Adelaide Hills in late December. A number of people within our own Dressage community have suffered enormous losses of property, stock and in many cases their livelihood. Thanks to friends and community members those affected have been supported. Fencing has begun and Blaze Aid has offered tremendous support. DCSA would like to extend our heartfelt thoughts to all those who were affected by the fires.
