The 17th Annual SSE Scottish Music Awards raised a total of £148,000 for Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland. Auction prizes included a guitar signed by Paolo Nutini, donated by Trespass. The man himself encouraged attendees to bid by offering up a personalised tour of Paisley and literally the shoes on his feet! The lucky winner won the tour and footwear for a steal at £3,300. The Paisley born singer-songwriter also made the winning bid of £8,000 for a trip to a luxury Gleneagles lodge – outbidding himself all in the name of the charity about which he spoke eloquently and at length, mentioning therapy sessions he has been part of and his ongoing and long term support for Nordoff Robbins Scotland. Awards during the evening went to Paolo himself and others included Rab Noakes, Model Aeroplanes, Amy McDonald, Single By Sunday and KLOE. Other highlights of the night included PR mogul Murray Chalmers winning the Sunday Mail Music Business Award whose 30 years in the industry has seen him work with artists such as Coldplay, Kylie, Paloma Faith, Noel Gallagher and Muse, who all personally congratulated Murray on the night. The night, hosted by STV’s Jennifer Reoch and Ewen Cameron, brought together some of Scotland's most celebrated acts and artists and honoured them with numerous awards, handcrafted for the occasion by Scottish woodwork designer Paul Hodgkiss. Winning the SSE Best Live Act Award was Paolo Nutini, who smashed a headline performance to 35,000 people for Glasgow’s Summer Sessions at Bellahouston Park, as well selling out two SSE Hydro shows at the start of the year.

With the 2015 MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards set to take place in Dundee on Saturday 5 December, BBC ALBA has confirmed its plans for coverage of the event, widely regarded as the biggest night of the Scots Traditional music calendar.

Since 2008 BBC ALBA has provided coverage from the awards which are now broadcast live and the channel will once again be bringing viewers and listeners the best from this year’s event taking place at Caird Hall, Dundee. And for the first time ever, included in this year’s package will be worldwide coverage on www.bbc.co.uk/alba with BBC Radio Scotland also broadcasting the awards live from the event.

Hosting the evening will be the prodigiously-talented duo, Mary Ann Kennedy and Tony Kearney. Along with presentations of awards across sixteen categories, the evening will feature live performances from a host of top Scottish performers including renowned Gaelic singer Cathy Ann MacPhee who will be travelling from Canada for the occasion, as well as the Peatbog Faeries and Duncan Chisholm, who won Album of the Year 2014.

Event founder and promoter Simon Thoumire, said: “I am thrilled and delighted that BBC ALBA will once again be bringing the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards to audiences throughout the UK and it’s a huge bonus that the awards will also be broadcast worldwide bringing Scotland’s music and song to new international audiences.”

Margaret Cameron, BBC ALBA Executive Producer, said: “BBC ALBA is delighted to be working with Bees Nees Media and other partners including Dundee City Council to bring the awards to a wider audience of viewers and listeners both at home and on a worldwide stage through our enhanced broadcast package. It’s sure to be a fantastic night with a great line-up reflecting Scottish Traditional Music at its very best.”

Sharon Mair, Editor Radio Music, Events and Partnerships for BBC Scotland, said: “BBC Radio Scotland has a great track record of supporting Scottish traditional music so we’re delighted to be broadcasting live from the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards for the first time on Saturday 5th December. City of Dundee Lord Provost Councillor Bob Duncan, said: “Dundee City Council is delighted to welcome such a prestigious national music event to the city for the first time and I am certain that Dundee will put on a fantastic show for the BBC ALBA and worldwide audiences as well as those visiting the city for the event. I am also pleased that Dundee’s very own Catriona Mackay who won the Instrumentalist of the Year category at last year’s awards will be performing as part of the evening’s entertainment.”

SAMAs return for a special Christmas bash to wrap up 2015

The Scottish Alternative Music Awards (SAMAs) and Rebel Rebel will return this December 11th for a festive music feast at citizenM Glasgow to cap off the awards’ most successful year to date.

Dundee five-piece Sinderins – formerly Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward, and Fisher - top the bill for the night at the boutique Glasgow hotel which is also set to feature acoustic up-and-comer Greg Pearson and the Best Newcomer nominated White Baer. With all of the acts playing acoustically, the SAMAs showcases give a platform for the best emerging musicians in the country to hone their live skills in an intimate environment.

SAMAs founder and organiser Richy Muirhead is in good spirits ahead of the show, reflecting on a great year for the awards.

Muirhead said: "The SAMAs are all about throwing events and celebrating Scottish talent, so hosting a Christmas party was a no brainer for us. We've had a great year working with acts such as Gerry Cinnamon, Vukovi, Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5, and many more. The lineup for the 11th is a combination of new talent and previous nominees from across the country - we can't wait!"

GIGnotes: Tickets are available for the show from £10 (£5 for students with a valid matriculation card) from Eventbrite - and come with a complimentary drink on arrival!

The construction of a new purpose-built rehearsal and recording facility for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) and a new 600 seat music venue for Glasgow was completed in October.

Designed by Glasgow City Council’s in-house team of architects and led by Kerr Robertson, who was responsible for city projects such as the refurbishment of much lauded Glasgow’s City Halls, and world-renowned acoustic specialists ARUP, the new home for Scotland’s national symphony orchestra now provides a “world class” venue for the Orchestra, increased scope and flexibility for the organisation’s education and learning programmes, and a new mid-sized auditorium for the city’s music programme.

The new auditorium at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, adjacent to the RSNO Centre, exhibits a number of design features implemented to optimise the acoustic qualities of the venue, for both rehearsal and performance situations. Fixed sound absorption is distributed throughout the hall, controlling excessive loudness but also reduces reverberance. The large scale (e.g. risers, ceiling and upper wall elements) and small scale (e.g. lower side walls) articulation throughout the hall scatters sound at different frequencies, providing an even sound and avoiding harsh reflections.

In rehearsal mode and full orchestral performance mode the side balconies fold up against the walls, realising the maximum

available hall volume and floor space for the Orchestra. For recitals the balconies are deployed, narrowing the room, providing desirable lateral sound reflections to listeners, increasing acoustical intimacy and clarity. They also increase theatricality and visual intimacy, with the audience wrapped around the performers, and can be used artistically for camera positions, video screens and surround sound loudspeakers.

Adjustable acoustic banners vary the sound absorption in the space, depending on the use and repertoire. Fully retracting the banners results in maximum reverberance (and loudness), ideal for chamber recitals. Partially deployed banners controls the loudness, for instance in orchestral rehearsal situations, while retaining suitable reverberance. For amplified music a well-controlled acoustic is necessary, free from echoes, which is achieved by exposing the maximum banner area.

Overhead reflectors, also adjustable, provide useful

reflections to support self and mutual hearing for musicians. Reflections from the ceiling – which needs to be high to provide the volume necessary for reverberance without excessive loudness - arrive too late and too weak for early support and timing. In addition to their benefit to the Orchestra, the reflectors also provide useful reflections to the audience in performance mode. Their heights can be adjusted to suit the use/repertoire.

The construction has been supported with funding from Scottish Government and Creative Scotland, corporate sponsors, trusts and foundations, individual donors, and Glasgow City Council, as the new auditorium will be a shared, joint use facility managed by Glasgow Life.

Plans for the new wing include the instillation of dedicated state-of-the-art learning and education facilities, with flexible sensory areas, and integrated digital technologies for recording, composing, broadcasting music, and connecting with

communities across Scotland and further afield.

The Orchestra’s new home is also equipped with enhanced foyer spaces for audiences and visitors, a music library for the Orchestra’s extensive archive that will ensure access to scores for research, practice and performance, private practice and small ensemble rehearsal rooms, and administrative and technical offices for the Orchestra including stores for its equipment.

High on the list of priorities during the planning and construction of the new building were defining the best possible ecological credentials. From opting for a brownfield site to selecting state-of-the-art lighting system (supplied by AC Lighting) which runs off a fraction of the power of current used by concert lighting configurations, the new centre can boast one of the best green ratings of any rehearsal concert venue in the UK.

Owen and Olly’s Christmas Stocking gets festivities under way for the kids!

Children’s Classic Concerts and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra will be packing a bumper selection of musical treats into a fabulously festive stocking in Glasgow and Edinburgh this December.

Children’s Classic Concerts’ popular percussionist presenters Owen Gunnell and Oliver Cox have drawn up a wish list for Santa that includes a miniature performance of Delibes’s toyshop-based ballet Coppélia, a trip to the movies with Woody and Buzz, a Frozen adventure and a madcap dash down the ski slopes with audience participation.

Making Christmas wishes come true will be the magnificent RSNO under the baton of RSNO Associate Conductor Jean-Claude Picard, the Manor School of Ballet and six Area Choirs from the National Youth Choir of Scotland - NYCoS Stirling, NYCoS Renfrewshire, NYCoS West Lothian (Glasgow), NYCoS Falkirk, NYCoS Edinburgh, and NYCoS Midlothian (Edinburgh)

Children’s Classic Concerts presenter Owen Gunnell said:

“We think we have packed this stocking with something for everyone, but personally I love a bit of ballet at Christmas and I can’t wait to narrate the story of Coppélia with Olly. We are even getting involved in another bit of dancing later in the concert - I don’t want to reveal too much but a certain very popular snowman will be involved.”

Also featuring in Owen and Olly’s Christmas Stocking will be timeless seasonal classics Troika by Prokofiev, the Little Drummer Boy carol complete with percussion from Owen and Olly and a sing-along version of Jingle Bells.

Children’s Classic Concerts presenter Oliver Cox said:

“As always at our concerts there will be lots of chances for the audience to get up on their feet and join in. And as well as dashing about Owen and I will also be doing a bit of playing – we have a lovely medley of Christmas tunes to perform as well as a chance to get the drums out – something that I am always up for. ”

Jean-Claude Picard and the RSNO will also perform the Orchestral Suite from Frozen and Rossini’s William Tell will provide a high-energy finale.

GIGnotes: Owen and Olly’s Christmas Stocking, Saturday 5 December, 1.00pm and 3.00pm, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Sunday 6 December, 3.00pm, Usher Hall, Edinburgh. Tickets are priced from £6 and are available to buy from Glasgow Royal Concert Hall box office (0141 353 8000) or Usher Hall box office (0131 228 1155).

The 17th Annual SSE Scottish Music Awards

continued from page 1

Of the charity, Paolo said: "It's great to be invited along and to continue the relationship with Nordoff Robbins that we have built up over the last ten years. The awards are a celebration of Scottish musicians which is great but more importantly, they are a catalyst for raising money to help this great charity do the fantastic work that they do. Please, if you don't know about Nordoff and the work that they do then look into it and give them your support. Music can be a powerful thing.”

Colin Banks, Head of Sponsorship at SSE said: “The 2015 SSE Scottish Music Awards was a hugely successful evening, raising a significant amount of money for Nordoff Robbins Scotland, which will allow the charity to continue the life-changing provision of music therapy throughout the country.

“SSE is proud to have awarded the Best Live Act prize to the amazing Paolo Nutini following a year which saw him play sold-out shows at The SSE Hydro and Bellahouston Park, amongst a worldwide tour taking in almost 100 shows.”

Also honoured was Clare Grogan who took home the prestigious People Make Glasgow Special Recognition Award and performed with her new all-girl band line up. The multitalented singer and actress has been a spokesperson for her home town of Glasgow, which was named as one of National Geographic Traveler’s Top 20 world destinations for 2016.

Presenting the award was Councillor Frank McAveety, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, who said: “I was honoured to present the PEOPLE MAKE GLASGOW Special Recognition Award to Clare and to shine the spotlight on a leading musician that has helped to raise Glasgow’s profile as a world-class music destination.”

Pioneering boy-band Bay City Rollers picked up the Sir Reo Stakis Living Legends Award before closing the show in an outstanding tartan-clad performance which had the whole room on their feet. On his return to the music industry, singer

Les McKeown said: “This award means so much to me personally... as it’s from the Homeland! It’s truly amazing to see all this love for The Rollers again … I would like to thank everyone at SSE Scottish Music Awards for honouring the Rollers in such an incredible way after all these years. This award is bigger than

the Oscars because the Nordoff Robbins charity help change peoples lives... that’s special! Rollermania is back!!”

His bandmate, Alan Longmuir continued: “Winning this award makes me feel immensely proud and a wee bit emotional to receive this wonderful recognition after all these years. Nordoff Robbins Scotland is such a great charity and shows that music can be such a powerful healer. It was a privilege to be asked to close the SSE Scottish Music Awards show tonight and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and that everyone continues to support such an amazing cause.”

Guitarist Stuart ‘Woody’ Wood extended their gratitude: “Winning this award is simply amazing and I feel very honoured. I'm very thankful to be involved in something that shows that music can be such an amazing thing! A big thanks to the SSE Scottish Music Awards team and please everyone continue to support the

Shine are a trio of three of Scotland’s best known voices and two of the world’s finest harp players - Shine combines Corrina Hewat, Mary Macmaster and Alyth McCormack’s distinctive voices with two electro-harps, and now in 2015 they continue to lead the field with hauntingly timeless yet arrestingly modern arrangements of traditional, contemporary and original material.

Recent gigs include award nominated venue ‘Douglas’s House’ in Edinburgh, a beautiful ‘Here come the Girls’ night sharing the stage with another all girl band, The Shee, and a ‘return to form’ gig at last year’s Celtic Connections. Since then they have re-released their much loved album ‘Sugarcane’ and are now to release a new 5 track EP FIRE & FROST to coincide with their December 2015 tour. It contains versions of songs and arrangements they have been working on for the tour. They are also working on a new studio album to be released in 2016

Steeped in the traditions of Scotland (Alyth from the Hebrides, Corrina from the Highlands and Mary from the Lowlands) all are known for their fresh, creative approach and together they create a unique, distinctive and beautiful sound whether performing traditional Gaelic and Scottish songs, contemporary covers or original material.

Brought together in 1998 by the vibrant Scottish music scene they released their highly-acclaimed debut album ‘Sugarcane’ in 2001, toured throughout the UK & Europe and then in 2004 took a sabbatical to concentrate on their many and varied personal projects.

After a busy 10 year break which (amongst many other things) has seen Mary recording and performing with Sting and continued Poozies’ success; Corrina forming and fronting the power house Scottish supergroup The Unusual Suspects; and Alyth moving to Ireland joining The Chieftains and touring the world, a fortunate series of collaborations brought the girls back together. They shone at their re-union show at Celtic Connections in 2014 and are now happily reformed and excited to be playing together again.

“There was a justly warm welcome back for the newly reunited Shine, who’ve been on hiatus for over a decade, but rekindled all their former magic – and then some – with their bewitchingly arrayed harmonies, in a mix of traditional Gaelic songs, contemporary covers and original material, alternating otherworldly spookiness with sparkling lighter interludes” The Scotsman 2014

Sadly I missed most of opening act Lewis Capaldi’s set, however he clearly has a knack for penning a hit song. A genuinely talented young singer-songwriter who wouldn’t be out of place on a major label or on tour with the likes of Jake Bugg, Ben Howard or maybe Paolo Nutini, definitely one to watch. Video @ https://youtu.be/JsLt-zSUuLU

Next up was electro indie pop four-piece Lisbon from Whitley Bay (near Newcastle), who deliver a really slick show complete with underlying synths and multiple guitar tracks. A lot of production in the background but it’s no bad thing, second last song had a 'Friendly Fires' vibe and will no doubt be clocking up radio play soon, see www.facebook.com/lisbonmusic/

Edinburgh quartet, Indigo Velvet are tonight’s very worthy headliners. I was immediately struck by an unbelievably strong stage presence from such a young band. The songs were relentlessly upbeat and catchy [think along the lines of maybe 'Vampire Weekend', but with more bite and substance] and for such a newly formed band, their set was simply mesmerising and flawless. I know this seems trivial, but they actually looked like a proper band too; matching colourful shirts [not unlike their music] and skinny black jeans, it’s not hard to imagine mass sing-a-longs at festivals or arena shows in the not too distant future. Overall, Indigo Velvet are on the cusp of greatness, they’re really young, very accomplished musicians and judging by the fact this gig was nearly sold out we predict big things. Easily one of the finest young bands we’ve seen all year, we highly recommend you go see them as soon as you can. www.facebook.com/weareindigovelvet/

Latest News Scottish Music Centre member Gareth Wil-liams has co-written the music for Hirda A New Opera In Scotland presented by Noise Opera [founded by James Robert Carson, who also the Director for Hirda].

Hirda is a new opera inspired by the songs, stories, history and heritage of the Shetland Isles. A collaboration between Shetland fiddler and composer, Chris Stout classical com-poser and Scottish Music Centre member Gareth Wil-liams, and librettist Sian Evans.

Hirda tells the story of Alastair, a once successful actor who returns to his island home for the wedding of his brother. Everyone’s world is turned upside down when Alastair and his sister-in-law find that they have a strong attraction to each other.

The contemporary setting is interwoven with another story about a 19th century woman and her sailor fiancé, told through letters they wrote to each other. The opera is per-formed using Shetland words and dialect (‘Hirda’ is a Shetlandic word meaning, ‘chaos’, ‘confusion’ or ‘extreme untidiness’).

You can go to see Hirda on Sunday 29 November in Sandwick Hall, Shetland; Thursday 3 and Friday 4 December at The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh and on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December at Drygate Brewery, Glasgow

THE CUT THROAT RAZORS : ep : Motown's Lost Its Soul Release date - 27 November : www.thecutthroatrazors.com

Welcome to the world of The Cut Throat Razors! A sharp dressed, Glasgow based, 11 piece band formed in 2011.Their latest EP – Motown’s Lost Its Soul - was released on Friday 27 November at Stereo in Glasgow with support from SUPA & Da Kryptonites.

They won the prestigious Sunday Herald Best Unsigned Band 2014 competition and have since opened the Main Stage at the Wickerman Festival, headlined the Oxjam Takeover inaugural event and played King Tuts Wah Wah Hut.

They have a big punchy sound, evoking classic ska, motown, new wave, big band swing and polka. At times they are theatrical and comical and at others political and melancholic. This is the Cut Throat Razors. You will find them strangely unique, or perhaps, uniquely strange…..

‘The Cut Throat Razors’ music is terrifying, and yet bizarrely charismatic. A bit like the mafia…’ John Dickie, author of ‘Cosa Nostra – A History of the Sicilian Mafia’

‘I am bouncing around the kitchen like a kid full of Skittles’ – Tom Robinson, BBC6 Music

‘Fabulous Stuff’ – Jim Gellatly, Amazing Radio "An awfully entertaining EP from an equally entertaining entourage that provide us with a spiffing collection of four tunes formed from a strong blend of soul, blues and a little hint of jazz"... Jason Small, Local Music Scene www.thecutthroatrazors.com www.facebook.com/thecutthroatrazors https://twitter.com/cutthroatrazors

Highly anticipated debut album launch from Steal the Sun : Edinburgh based band Steal the Sun are releasing their self-produced debut album “Somewhere, Sometime” filled with catchy original pop-rock songs.

With a launch night at the fantastic ‘La Belle Angèle’ venue on Friday 4 December, Steal the Sun will be showcasing original merchandise, and offering some exciting and exclusive free giveaways. This promises to be a great night in the Capital, with support bands on from 7pm, and tickets just £5. Steal the Sun began as an idea shared between two in 2007, and

has now evolved into a five piece set up ready to make an impact in Scottish music. Steal the Sun have forged their way into the spotlight by infusing many genres and influences and evolving their music to create a beautiful and addictive sound. The roots of Steal The Sun began when Gavin Mitchell and Stacey Fraser began their songwriting collaboration

with “One Of These Days” (followed shortly by “It’s You I See”). At the beginning of 2013 Dan Hackney joined the band to flesh out the guitar sound and the quintet spent the rest of the year writing, gigging and planning some recording. In 2014 a new drummer, Kerry Thomson, joined the group successfully auditioning for the part and adding different flavour to the sound. For 2015 Stephen Doig joined the line-up and the band are currently working on the release of their debut album, designing some cool merchandise and trying to spread their music around Scotland and beyond. EDDIE TOAL Always In My Heart Album cd / download Release Date: Out Now Glasgow Jazz singer Eddie Toal has released a CD as a tribute to his wife Irene who always wanted him to make a recording. Sadly, Irene will never hear it. She died from Breast Cancer four years ago aged just 48. Irene’s dying wish was to help other patients at the Beatson Cancer Centre where she was treated. So Eddie (66) is donating all the proceeds from his recording to the Beatson Cancer Charity and hopes to raise thousands of pounds. “It’s not exactly the Taj Mahal but it’s the best I can do to remember her” says Eddie, an ex-railwayman and semi-professional singer. “Irene used to nag me about making a recording of old songs that we both loved but I just never got around to it. Well, now I have and it’s for a great cause.”

In Praha is a song about 2 people falling in love in Prague. The main riff was inspired by Here Comes Your Man by Pixies and the solo is my own very poor imitation of / homage to Nels Cline's solo in Impossible Germany by Wilco. Some have called it catchy. IAIN MORRISON EAS Album cd / download / vinyl? Release Date: 31 July It is never easy for a son to follow in the footsteps of a famous father, so Iain Jnr chose not to. He gave up the world of solo piping and went on his own musical journey. But what he was taught in his formative years is deep within him and this album is a definite attempt at some kind of filtering of the music of his hinterland. There is also a story present, sometimes a rocky one, of a father and son's relationship formed through a rich tradition and an art form that is deeply important to their culture and to both of them personally. There is a mixture of all these elements in this album and Iain Morrison is an artist who is following his own path, wherever that may take him. RACHEL SERMANNI Tied to the Moon Album : cd / download / vinyl Release Date: 10 July

Tied To The Moon was conceived in an apartment above a pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia where Rachel had four days of complete stillness with no means to communicate with the outside world - during silent afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music. In the space of these four days she unintentionally wrote six songs - four that would later become the core of Tied To The Moon: ‘Tractor’, ‘This Love’, ‘Banks Are Broken’ and ‘Old Lady's Lament’.
