THEAfricanHawkersAssociationhas vowedto fight crime and the selling of drugs on thestreets of Mthatha.
This pledge was made at a meeting in theMthatha Town Hall last Wednesday attendedby hundreds of hawkers. The meeting followed allegations that
Mthatha street vendors were also involvedin the criminal activities which are plaguingMthatha. The meeting was attended by the police
and other law enforcement agencies inMthatha who promised to work hand-in-glove with the hawkers to curb crime.Police recently arrested a number of peo-
ple at stands who posed as hawkers. They al-so seized a large amount of drugs in smallenvelopes and tea boxes. It was also discovered that foreigners sup-
posedly selling CDs were actually sellingdrugs on the streets, including York Road
and Sutherland, Chatham and Madeirastreets.African Hawkers Association president
Fundile Jalile said: “We are not encouragingxenophobia, but we will fight people whocommit crime irrespective of where theycome from because we will never fold ourarms and watch people committing crime infront of us.“Everybody in Mthatha must know that
we are not criminals. We are just hawkerswho try to survive. Those criminals whopose as hawkersmust be arrested,” a fumingJalile said.He stressed that stands must stop keeping
stolen goods. He said some people selling CDs were
problematic because behind the CDs therewere drugs.“Even some of the airtime sellers were not
selling airtime only,” he said.Hawker Nomabali Toti called on all hawk-
ers to establish committees that would facethe crime directly.

THE Deputy Minister of Cooperative Gov-ernance and Traditional Affairs, Obed Bap-ela, has warned illegal iingcibi (surgeons)who continue to conduct illegal initiationschools to expect a tough and merciless re-sponse from the government.
Bapela was speaking at a two-day man-hood summit at Dan’s Lodge last weekend. The purpose of the summit was to seek a
response to the continuing outcry of parentsand the community at large about injuries
to and deaths of young boys during and afterundergoing the initiation process, as well asto further reinforce and acknowledge the im-plementation of the current relevant strate-gies and legislation.Bapela agreed the initiation custom was
out of hand, but said the governmentwantedto strengthen the law so that people whocommercialised the custom received toughpunishment.“In this forthcoming circumcision season,
we will watch with an eagle eye. Traditionalsurgeons and nurses who do wrong and endup killing an initiate will get a minimum of10 years imprisonment. The maximum willbe from 15 to 20 years. We cannot allow the killing of our chil-
dren, who are the future of this country, bypeoplewhowant to generate money for theirown sake,” Bapela said.
He said they wanted to abolish illegalschools throughout the country and theyneeded this custom to be respected and not
regarded as a fashion. He urged initiates toensure that they went to schools authorisedby iinkosi if they were in the rural areas andby the municipality in the urban areas. He also stressed that this custommust also
adapt to medical male circumcision to alignwith modern practice. Professional circum-cision doctors known to the area must bebrought in to lead this custom.Eastern Cape House of Traditional Lead-
ers chairperson Nkosi Ngangomhlaba Mat-anzima called on parents to elect trusted, knowledgeable ingcibi and ikhankatha (tra-ditional surgeons and nurses).“I am talking about a person who is going
to handle these children and protect themfrom the criminals who forcefully give themalcohol,” Matanzima said. The summit was attended by iinkosi, gov-
ernment officials, women from various roy-al houses, young boys ready to undergo theritual and young men who have already un-dergone it.

last Tuesday (September 22), he said it wasimportant to preserve such knowledge so
that it could benefit the next generation. He said some of these herbs helped in heal-

pass it on to the next generation.”Traditional herbs expert Masikhathele

and our government paid more attention tothe western medicines, whereas ours doesthe same.“We grewup, even you (referring toMfeya-

STUDENTS at the King Sabatha DalindyeboTVETCollege inMthathaare continuingwiththeir trial exams following a protest whichlasted almost three weeks. The students were complaining that they
had not received their National Student Fi-nancial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances.Everything went back to normal after par-
ents and management met to discuss the is-sue.
Provincial Sasco executive committeemember Oscar Sifuba said a task team hadbeen selected to ensure that there was a solu-tion to the problem.“At the moment I can say everything is
back to normal because of this task team thatwas selected, but we will see what happenswhen they give us feedback,” he said.Although the Cicira campus students were
writing their trial exams, those at the Ntaboz-
uko campus in Elliotdale and at the Ngcobocampus were continuing with their protestand not writing exams.Sifuba said most of the students were from
poor backgrounds and that was why they hadapplied for NSFAS bursaries. They stayed far from the institution, could
not afford to pay for transport every day andended up walking long distances. This alsomade them the targets of thugs.
“This year the NSFAS granted studentsR36-million for tuition and allowances, butour students did not get those allowances,”college spokesman Sigqibo Kahla said.“The Ntabozuko campus has closed down
and the management will negotiate with stu-dents this week.“I can confirm that students at the Ngcobo
campus are writting their exams.”– BABALWA NDLANYA

WOMEN’s Network and Men for Changepolice officers gathered in Mthatha tocelebrate Heritage Day and remembertheir traditions and customs.
Cluster commander Major General Jo-han Fourie said he was proud of the wayhis officers were doing things and hedoubted there was another cluster that
was doing what they were doing.“Mthatha is leading by example. I as-
sure you that others will learn from youbecause keeping traditions and customsalive is very important.”
He said that nowadays the world wasfaced with a high rate of rape, violenceand other crime because people had shift-ed from what they were supposed to doand traditions had gone down the drain.
Fourie encouraged officials to bring
back their dignity because now peoplejust sat in shebeens and drank alcoholand had forgotten where they had comefrom.
He said Men for Change must makesure they set an example so that othermen could learn from them.
He also urged the officials not to forgetGod, their families and their culture be-cause if they forgot those things theywould lose focus.

friends argued about going back to anotherarea to find booze, since they had finished thecase thatwas in the taxi. When thepassengerssaid itwas all right, the driverwent backwithus to look for booze,” Zuko said.
When theywent into the shebeen to buy thealcohol, an argument had broken out betweenthe driver and othermenwhowere in the she-been.
The argument had then turned into a hugefight.
“Another passenger, who is my neighbour, and I decided towalk away even though itwasdark because we saw that our lives were indanger although we were not involved in thismess.

VIOLENCE among Lusikisiki and Flag-staff taxi drivers has prompted the pro-vincial government to intervene as thesafety of innocent passengers is in dan-ger.
Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana mettaxi owners in Flagstaff on Thursday lastweek in an effort to put an end to the prob-lem on Ingquza Hill roads.
One taxi owner, who asked for anonym-ity for his safety, said Lusikisiki taxidrivers had gone against an agreementreached by the Provincial Taxi Councilthat they should use the St Elizabethroute to Qaukeni Great Place to reachBuhlanyanga and Holy Cross.
“It is not Flagstaff taxi drivers who are
dangerous and problematic, but seeming-ly Lusikisiki is the problem because thetaxis who get damaged and burnt are theones from Flagstaff,” the driver said.
Tikana said the problem was betweenthe two towns, and so they had decided tomeet both parties to come to a solution.
“We decided to form a committee of rep-resentatives from the municipality, thetransport industry, the Lusikisiki andFlagstaff taxi owners associations andfrom the Border Alliance at provinciallevel to come to an agreement that willmake sure we never find ourselves in thissituation again,” Tikana said.
Lusikisiki police spokesman CaptainMduduzi Godlwana said no one has beenarrested in any of the incidents, but thepolice were working hard to maintainpeace between the two parties.

A CONVICTED murderer asked the com-munity for forgiveness at a victim offenderdialogue hosted by the Department of Cor-rectional Services in Mbizana last Thurs-day.
Siphelele Mabhude is serving a 30-yearsentence for crimes committed in Nomlacu, including murder and attempted murder. He was sentenced in 1995.Last Thursday he had the chance to ask
for forgiveness from the victims and fami-lies of the dead.Mabhude said he was very sorry for the
crimes he had committed and was now achanged man.“I am so sorry for all the pain I have
caused to the families of the deceased andthe (attempted murder) victim and I prom-ise to never go back to my old ways, butwork on fighting crime in my community,”he said.He added that he hoped that all the local
young boys who saw him as a role modelwould stop their criminal acts because be-ing in jail was not good.Mabhude was sentenced for the murder
of Zukile Mavukwana and attempted mur-der of Mfuneko Mti, both from Nomlacu lo-cation, and anger was evident from bothfamilies during his plea and explanation of
his motives.Mavukwana’s mother, Zoleka Mavukwa-
na, said she had gone through a lot of heart-ache when she lost her son.“What is worse is that Mabhude never
showed any remorse back then and duringthe court proceedings I was the laughingstock of his family and friends,” she said. She said she had forgivenMabhude for all
his wrongdoings and she hoped he meantwhat he said about being a changed man.Mfuneko Mti seemed to have many unan-
swered questions for Mabhude and angerwas still evident in his voice.Regional commissioner Nkosinathi
Breakfast said the session had been aimedat giving the offender a chance to talk withthe victims and community at large tomakesure that the community was alerted abouthis release and to allow him to show re-morse.“This was to give victims an opportunity
to talk to the perpetrator where he has achance to tell the truth and ask for forgive-ness, while also giving them a platform toexpress their views on his release,” Break-fast said.Mabhude underwent several pro-
grammes in the Wellington Prison inMthatha where he is being kept, includingAggressive Behaviour Management,Changing Lanes, Drug Abuse and LifeSkills.

Shame of this generationSometimes we ask ourselves about the fu-
ture of this country in the hands of drunkardsamong our young people.Ja, alcohol is not new, but these young peo-
ple are swimming deep in a pool of alcohol andsometimes they tend to forget the importantthings and instead they put utywala first. We were watching a guy who was grandly
drunk at the launch of an important projectaimed at developing the local youth and togeneratemoney for the area, but kukhonaaba-za kulo mcimbi onjalo bephelile kukunxila. Iwonder where we are going to. He was forcinghis way to the stage ukuba uyokwenza ntoninobody knows.
Dear young people, let us limit our speed inalcohol abuse because we are ruining our-selves and the future of our beautiful countrywhichootataMandelanabanye they fought forto be free. This honey that the blood spills be-fore we get it seems as if sidlala ngayo ngoku.Abanye abasalali nasemakhaya leli jiki ba-
vumela into ewrong ethi koze kuse. Phezaningoku kwanele. Tell them gossip.
Okwenzileyo okubi kukulandela njalonawe
Uyabona ke okubi okwenzileyo nakuwe ku-yenzeka and kukhawulezile konke oku. I won-der xa bedibana phaya eZulwini uza kuthi wa-yembulale ntoni usisi okanye ubhuti wakhe
xa bembuza? If bekundim Gesh bendakucelaba-yinike mna ifolokhwe yokumfaka esihog-weni umntu obulele omnye kuba akumeleukuba si-bulale.
Dark cloud over MzansiJa, we are not fortune tellers, but the way
things are going we can see a huge hell we aregoing to?We can see someyoung people of today don’t
want to work hard and want to get things inthe easiest way. They don’t believe in sweating in order to
attain happiness in life. They can spend thewhole week in taverns if not shebeens.Even those who are lucky enough to get a
job just choose boozing rather than their pre-cious jobs and end up quitting the job becauseno employer can allow a drunkard in his orher workplace. I wonder iingqondo zabo zisi-benza nini normally xa zahlala zigqunywe li-
jiki.So if our young people become heavy drink-
ers but jobless, where will they get the moneyto buy more booze?Obviously they have to steal and rob those
who try to make a living. So as a gossip teamwe see the country being
overwhelmed by crime because it produced ageneration which hates to make living doingthings on its own, but depending on commit-ting crime to get what it needs.Mara kwangoku sekuqalile because ooma-
gogo xa bamkele i-“pay” abasalali emakhaye-ni kuba ezi ntwana zibazingela okwenyamaza-ni zifuna le mali.Nakhonake lemali aziyi kuthengakutyabe-
sides ukuyofuna iziyobisi notywala.Mawwuuu!! Yatsho ikati. Kunzimahonestly
ezweni sokhile.Masike sithi shelele until next time with
more gossip.
