February 4, 2018!Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time!
The Devil is Real! “Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases, and He drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew Him. “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” Satan (the devil) is often perceived as a comical caricature with a red body, horns, bat wings, pointy tail, and pitchfork. Many people believe he’s just a mythical symbol of wrongdoing. However, the Bible says he is real and represents the very essence of evil! And his plans for escalating immorality, sorrow, pain, and destruction are succeeding to an incredible degree. The Bible never portrays Satan as artists do. This notion actually comes from Greek mythology and the distortion helps the devil. Scripture says he is a powerful force to be reckoned with, but he can be defeated. Before he sinned, he came from heaven, “How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!” (Isaiah 14:12!13) "I saw Satan as lightning fall from heaven." (Luke 10:18) God did not create the devilHe created a perfect angel. (Ephesians 3:9) Lucifer was a "covering" cherub. (Ezekiel 28:14; Psalm 99:1) His beauty was flawless and his brightness was awe!inspiring. Pride and discontent led Lucifer to become jealous of God’s supreme power. He actually hoped to unseat God and then demand that all worship him. (Isaiah 14:13, 14) Contrary to popular opinion, Satan's headquarters is on the earth, not in hell. God gave Adam and Eve dominion over the earth. In Job 2:2, "The LORD said to the Satan, “Where have you been?” Then the Satan answered… “Roaming the earth and patrolling it.” ! “The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it.”!(Revelation 12:9) But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time.” (Revelation 12:12)! Every one of us is engaged in a fierce, life!defining battle with Satan who wants your soul. We are at war as St. Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but with the principalities, with the authorities, with the worldrulers of the darkness of this age, with the spiritual things of the evil…”. St. Paul tells us in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” This phrase emphasizes that we need sobriety & vigilance. If we were at war, we would not think of turning our back on the enemy until the battle was won. Negligence in this battle is far more costly!!our soul for eternity. That is why each and every temptation must be resisted. “The Spirit then led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the devil.”! (Matthew 4:1) “Then the devil left him because Jesus stood His ground and invoked the sacred scripture”. The devil can only come as close as we allow him. Saint Augustine stated that God gave Satan a free hand; He cannot kill us, but he tries to make us into his followers. ! We are told in Ephesians 4:27 “do not give the devil a foothold”. This emphasizes that this is something within our power to control. Not even a foothold can be spared. Though powerful and cunning, the devil can never control our will or force disobedience. Active resistance is essential! Satan is not one to have mercy on us out of pity or generosity. He only flees from those who have the courage and faith to resist him. We do have power to resist the devil. Jesus should be our weapon of choice because Jesus came "to destroy the works of the devil" (I John 3:8), to free us from Satan's slavery, and to establish the kingdom of God. We are told in James 4:7 “Resist the devil and he will flee from you." Jesus was aware of the presence of Satan in the world and spoke of the kingdom of the devil as well as a kingdom of God in Matthew 12:26. Jesus not only defeated Satan through His sacrifice on the cross but has defeated him through His teachings: "If it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you" (Luke 11:20).! Pope John Paul II said, "The battle against the Satan, is still being fought today, because the devil is still alive and active in the world. The evil that surrounds us today, the disorders that plague our society, man's ……brokenness, is the result of Satan's pervasive … action."

A Family Perspective from the Office of Family Life Education (A Hope Appeal Agency): In today’s gospel Jesus went to the “house of Andrew & Simon” to relax but discovered that “Simon’s motherinlaw was very ill. Like Jesus, we come home to relax but are confronted with problems. Take a tip from Andrew & Simon who “told Jesus about it at once.” !

Continued from cover:! Even Pope Francis has frequently expressed the belief that the devil really exists and is not merely “a myth, a figure, an idea, the idea of evil.” Two years ago, the pontiff reportedly performed an exorcism on a wheelchair!bound young man, who shook violently when Francis laid his hands on him and said a blessing. Demonic activity is on the rise as a result of increased interest in the occult among young people. Those who dabble in Ouija boards, séances, magic and visiting fortune tellers only increase the likelihood of demonic possession. “Only a sliver of a fraction of people are attracted to evil for evil’s sake. The rest are fooled. Cunning is the devil’s game.” (Patti Armstrong) Thus the prayer to St. Michael was a result of that warning. Many of you probably remember it: Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.! Today, we can’t wait to get out of church to go to breakfast or the mall and often leave before Mass is finished. Perhaps each of us should spend a minute longer and pray this prayer. ! My reason for teaching you this is to help you better prepare yourself against the attacks of the devil that will undoubtedly come your way. So, when the devil comes knocking at your door, simply say, “Jesus, would you get that for me?”!!
