Till 11amGalen Rhode, owner of the North Bennington Variety
store, stands in front of the new 100kW solar array that
local installer Power Guru recently completed. The
project will produce electricity for his convenience
store, in addition to an apartment, his home, and nearby
McCullough Library. Through efficiency measures,
Rhode had been able to reduce his energy consumption
some 20% since purchasing the store over a decade ago,
but he was looking for even further savings. Solar was
the next logical step for him. He expects the system to
have paid for itself after about seven years, which makes
going green not just a good environmental choice, but
also good business sense. One of his customers com-
mented that the array is bigger than I expected, but
Rhode reports that the feedback has been overwhelm-ingly positive. Everybody says how nice it looks. They
like the layout. I think its a great use of this spaghetti
lot, which was useless otherwise, trapped between the
road and the railroad tracks.

WARREN, WASHINGTON, AND SARATOGA COUNTY YOUTHTO CELEBRATE NATIONAL 4-H WEEK OCTOBER 5-11.
More than 6 million young people across the country will celebrateNational 4-H Week, an
annual celebration of 4-H during the first full week of October. Warren County 4-H will leverage
National 4-H Weekthis year to showcase the great things that 4-H offers young people and
highlights the incredible 4-H youth in the community who work each day to make a positive
impact on the community.
The 4-H ideal is based on practical, learn-by-doing experiences encouraging youth to experi-
ment, innovate, and think independently. Youth learn leadership, citizenship, and life skills through
more than 1,000 projects with topics as varied as rocketry, GPS mapping, DNA analysis, public
speaking, photography, nutrition, and community service, said John Bowe, 4-H Team Coordinator, Currently, Saratoga, Washington, and Warren Counties areworking together on Wal-Mart Healthy Living project that teaches youth about making positive nutritional decisions and encourages physical activity, while also
promoting youth leadership by having youth conducting outreach activities based on what they have learned in the program.
Recent findings from the Tufts University 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development indicate that, when compared to their peers, young people in 4-H are:
Nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities,
Two times more likely to pursue healthy behaviors like, and
Two times more likely to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs in the out-of-school time.
About 4-H:4-H, the nations largest youth development and empowerment organization, cultivates confident kids who tackle the issues that matter most in their
communities right now. In the United States, 4-H programs empower six million young people through the 109 land-grant universities and Cooperative Extension
in more than 3,000 local offices serving every county and parish in the country. Outside the United States, independent, country-led 4-H organizations empower
one million young people in more than 50 countries. National 4-H Council is the private sector, non-profit partner of the Cooperative Extension System and 4-H
National Headquarters located at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
