KNITTING CLASS - KNIT WITS
The Center is offering a beginners knitting class on Thursdays from 2 to 3:30 pm. You will need 1 pair of
#7 knitting needles and 1-sugar’n cream skein (ball) of yarn. This is a drop-in class and new folks are
welcome! This class is free and for members only.
HEARING TEST
We are having hearing checks, including checking and/or cleaning hearing aids, at the Center. Butch,
from the Fairborn Hearing Aid Center, will be here the third Thursday of the month from 11 am to 12
noon. The test will be held in the hallway near the restrooms and theater and he will take folks on a first
come first serve basis.
GARDEN GROUP
Due to scheduling conflicts, the Garden Group did not meet in March. However, mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 17 for the next meeting. Attendees can plan to do a light outdoor clean-up followed by planting lettuce boxes for each to take home. Vegetable seeds will be planted in the raised growing bed so cross your fingers for good weather. Plan to join us June 12th at 1:00 pm when we are hitting the road for a visit to Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark. We are touring the numerous gardens, departing from the Senior Center at 9:30, returning by noon. Bus transportation is available, but limited seating requires a reservation. The cost is $5.
NUTRITION FOR AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE
TUESDAY MAY 22ND 10 AM
Food has the power to provide fuel for our bodies and support an active lifestyle, or it can be a source of health concerns. In this class, we will take a look at determining how much protein is needed to support an active body and how food can be used to reduce inflammation. We will also have the opportunity to sample some foods and recipes that can help boost overall nutrition. Program is free to members, but there are limited spots so you must sign up. Join Jordan, Registered Dietician Nutritionist from Kroger.

MOVIE— THE POST
This historical drama is based on the events surrounding the release of the Pentagon Papers, documents which detailed the history of the United States' political and military involvement in Vietnam. The story centers on Kay Graham, the first female newspaper publisher in the country (specifically of the Washington Post), as well as her tough editor, Ben Bradlee. The two become involved in an unprec-edented power struggle between journalists and the government, exposing a cover-up that has spanned four different American presidencies. Ana from Springfield Masonic Community is our movie sponsor for the popcorn and pop.

BOOK NOOK

As Deb still tries to get something set up with AAA to take over our account we are
working on getting our yearly baseball game scheduled. Please check back in the newsletter for
updates. In the meantime, we ask if you have a trip you would like to see us offer, please let staff know.
We want to do more trips this year and whether it is a trip with Deb or one from the Center we know
there are folks out there that like to travel and unfortunately we have cancelled quite a few the past
couple of years due to lack of registration. That is different than lack of interest. Lack of sign-up before
scheduled deadline is what has cancelled our trips more than a lack of interest. Remember if we offer a
trip and you are interested you must sign-up and pay the ticket price or deposit before the deadline so
we know the trip is a go. Lets get back on track and back on the road with some fun trips this year.
Also Remember Joy Travel is available for motor coach trips and all other travel you might want to plan.
Most of their trips leave from Lathrem Senior Center near the Kettering Recreation Center. I know some
members as well as Deb that has used their services and were very pleased. Contact them toll free at
800-875-4569.
Thanks and see you on the coach,
Deb & Lee
FATHER’S DAY LUNCH
In recognition of Father’s Day the Center will celebrate with our fathers and grandfathers on Friday, June
15th. We will take a trip to a local restaurant (surprise) to enjoy a delicious meal and share some stories,
most of them true. We will meet at the Center for an11:30 am departure on our
vans and return at approximately 2 pm. Limited seats available and tickets are
$5 for members.
TRAVEL WITH DEB
THE WATER AND THE BLOOD - author Nancy E. Turner This novel takes place in east Texas in the years of the Second World War and the life of a young woman named Philadelphia Summers, known against her will as Frosty. From the novel's harrowing opening scene, Frosty's eyes survey the landscape around her -- white rural America--with the awestruck clarity of an innocent burned by sin. In her mother and sisters she sees fear and small mindedness; in the eyes of local boys she sees racial hatred and hunger for war. When that war finally comes, it offers her a chance for escape -- to California and the arms of Gordon Benally, a Native American soldier. When she returns to Texas she must face the rejection of a town still gripped by suspicion and confront the memory of the crime that has marked her soul since adolescence. Remember to date, initial and return for others to enjoy

Volume VI, Issue 1 MAY 2018
FROM YOUR COUNCIL ON AGING Congratulations to Tom Kingsbury ~ the Beavercreek
recipient of the Council’s 2018 Leadership Award. Tom
was honored at the April 25th Senior Recognition Luncheon
at the Greene County Fairgrounds. Tom has been a
transportation program volunteer at the Center for 6 years.
Tom’s priority is time with his family, but he is ready,
willing and able to be on the regular escort schedule as
often as he can. He also steps in regularly to cover for
another escort when asked , often at the last minute, un-
less of course he is already committed to time with family.
Tom has a contagious smile and there is no better greeting
to those being picked up by the wonderful drivers and es-
corts of the Center! Please join us in thanking Tom for all
he does for the Center and the seniors benefiting from the
transportation program.
SENIORPALOOZA
Please join us on Tuesday, May 15th at the Greene County
Fairgrounds for the SeniorPalooza ~ Our Stories Continue.
The brochure and registration forms are available at the
Center, the Council and on-line (www.gccoa.org). There is
no charge, unless you choose to purchase a $5 box lunch.
We are asking, however, that you bring a paper product or
two for our area food pantries. And for those coming out
for the 5K Walk/Run/Roll ~ you will receive the Senior
Palooza tee shirt for getting up early to join us at 8:30 am
as we ‘move’! You can participate in all or any portion of
the day and we encourage you to bring a friend.
The Assembly Hall opens at 10:00 am with a great mix of
activities, including Words in Words, Mad Libs, making
book page sachets, story stones, a challenging bookstore
jigsaw puzzle, autobiography beach ball toss and more.
This year’s project is making a set of bookends, which
runs from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. We will also have a
Scrabble Challenge from 11am to 12:15 pm, when we will
name our Scrabble champion! Box lunches will be availa-
ble from noon to 12:45 pm and Shawnah Tibbs-Sergent
will lead us in some stretching, balance and movement
exercises at 12:45 pm. We will close out the action-packed
day with Whirly Words, the Council’s version of Wheel of
Fortune. Monty Lee Duteil and Tim Sajak Brickey! We
also have a terrific collection of doorprizes and some sur-
prises as we celebrate being an adult in Greene County!
