2011 Big Blue Baseball - 4
LOOKING AT 2011Millikin Head Baseball Coach Josh Manning believes the
Big Blue will be improved in 2011 and ready to move up in
the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin standings.
Millikin has a strong group of returners, a couple of key
transfers, a solid crop of freshman and a deeper pitching
staff, which should all equal more victories for the Big Blue
this season.
The strength of the Millikin returners can be found on the
infield where the Big Blue return all four starters from last
season. Heading the group is senior Mike Maziarz who
started all 40 games last season for the Big Blue splitting
time between first and third base. Maziarz hit .387 with 14
doubles, two triples, four homeruns and 31 RBI.
The double play combo of shortstop Andrew Agee and Theo Facer
are back for Millikin in 2011 as well. Agee has started 70 games at
shortstop for the Big Blue over the last two seasons hitting .274 last
season. Facer started at second base in 39 game last season hitting
.273. Senior Sean Ryan also returns after seeing significant time at
third base last season. Millikin has several infielders Manning believes
have the talent to push the returners for playing time. That group
includes senior Josh Lusch, junior Kevin Campbell and freshman Joe
Palazzolo and Adam Shook.
Manning believes the 2011 edition of the Big Blue pitching staff will
be improved after losing only two pitchers from last year. In addition to
the solid group of returners, Manning believes he has at least seven
additional hurlers that will provide quality innings on the mound for the
Big Blue in 2011. Josh Schultz will head up the staff after making 13
appearances and nine starts last season. Other returners that saw
significant time on the mound last year include Logan Bolton (four
saves), Peter Bonner, Adam Maletich, Tyler Smith, Tim Parcel and
Kevin Stocks.
Millikin’s improved depth on the mound will come from two familiar
faces and a group of talented freshman. Junior Rich Kaczynski is throwing the ball very well in preseason workouts after being
limited to five appearances last season. Second year player Shawn Stone is ready for 2011 after not being able to compete last
season. Manning is expecting big things from freshman Max Couch, Ryan Gesell, Nick Kennedy, Joe Pratt and John Steele.
While Manning is faced with rebuilding the Millikin outfield after the gradation of two all conference performers, he believes a
talented trio of newcomers will provide significant contributions to the Big Blue. Two transfer student-athletes should see time in
the Big Blue outfielder. David Peters joins the Big Blue after a solid career at Lake Land Community College and Dan Weber
comes to Millikin after a season at Forest Park Community College. Andrew Hendrian could also be a major force in the Millikin
outfielder this season after earning all state honors last year as a high school senior. Hendrian spent last season at Southeast
Missouri State.
Logan Bolton, Jim Pannozzo and Jonathan Haley are in the mix for time behind the plate. Pannozzo played in seven varsity
games last season with six starts. Haley is ready to stake his claim for playing time after an injury forced him out of action last
season.
Several other players could make contributions for the Big Blue this season including two-time letter winning senior outfielder
Warren Beals, junior letter winner infielder Matt Rupar, sophomore letter winner Matt Herek and junior outfielder Chad Wolpert.
Wolpert returns to the diamond this season after sitting out last year to concentrate on his duties on the Millikin football team.
Freshman Jared Dosien is ready to stake his claim to playing time in the Big Blue outfield.
Pitchers Jeff Luscak, Mike Pannozzo and Raul Frausto will be completing for spots on the pitching staff.
