Millburn Township has a rich tradition thatreaches back to the mid-19th century. Manyexamples of its history are represented by anumber of architecturally significant homesand historic districts. As a 21st century
community, Millburn Township is widely known as one of thecountry’s most desirable towns in which to live, work and dobusiness.
Once part of the Elizabethtown and Newark settlementscreated in the 1660s, Millburn became a separate townshipwithin Essex County in 1857. In 2007, the townshipcelebrated its 150th anniversary, which it marked withnumerous special events and activities.
After the Revolution, the area gradually changed from one offarms to one of grist, lumber and paper mills, including theone that is now the site of the famed Paper Mill Playhouse.
With the Morris and Essex Railroad completed in 1835,Millburn and its local industries became linked to the bigcities in the east and the coal regions in the northwest. Thename “Millburn” was decided upon partly because many of
the town’s residents hailed from Scotland, and the mill andburn (Scottish word for stream) reminded them of home.
Because of its location and railroad access, Millburnunderwent a major change in the late 1800s when the areas ofMillburn and Short Hills were developed within its borders.Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the spring window shade, builthis ideal village called “Short Hills” — the first plannedcommuter suburb in America.

With its origins largely as a commuter town,Millburn-Short Hills boasts easy access tothe city while retaining its “country”charm. From the early days when the area provided rail transportation for
summer residents retreating from the heat of the city, theneighborhoods of Millburn and Short Hills have served as abeautiful respite from the faster pace of city living.
Early architecture incorporated Gothic Revival, Italianate andother Romantic Revival styles. By the 1890s, elegant QueenAnne Victorian mansions were built on estates that were onceworking farms. At the turn of the century, noted architectsbegan designing Arts and Craft-style homes, and by the ‘20sand ‘30s, European-inspired Tudors were being developed.Approximately 50 of these early homes are historicallyregistered landmarks.
Growth continued steadily and newer styles joined theresidential landscape in the post-war boom. Morecontemporary homes were constructed in the last severaldecades.
Depending upon individual lifestyles, residents may choosefrom single-family homes, garden apartments and small-scaleapartment complexes. Styles and price ranges vary, withhomes in the area selling from $500,000 to $5 million in thepast several years.
A limited number of exclusive carriage homes are currentlyunder construction along the scenic Van Winkle Brook inShort Hills, just minutes from in-town shopping. The Enclavewill feature large, full-amenity dwellings within walkingdistance of the Short Hills Train Station.
