fresh green trees on campus, and the clear green sky in
Mie. In this privileged environment, we are aiming to
establish Mie University as the most environmentally
advanced university in the world. We provide world-
class community-based education and research results
through the harmonious coexistence of nature and
mankind.
Currently more than 230 students coming from China,
Vietnam, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Germany,

Japanese Language Course andCulture Education for International Students
International Career Development ProgramAiming towards the Development and Cultivation of Internationalization
This intensive course consists of 2 to 3 lessons a week, with
daily homework and periodical tests. Therefore, students should
be prepared to allocate this course a significant amount of time
in order to successfully complete it.
It is recommended that students who wish to join this Inten-
sive Japanese Language Course discuss and consult with their
supervisor before they submit their application form.
The Intensive Japanese Language Course at the CIER
was originally intended for international students who have
a Japanese Government Scholarship, and need to master
Japanese immediately. However, there is usually room
available for the required capacity, allowing us to regularly
accept other students.
Intensive Japanese Language Course
The Japanese Studies Student Program is also intended mainly for Japanese Government Scholarship Stu-
dents majoring in Japanese Language or Culture. They are undergraduate students enrolled in faculties or
graduate schools, usually recommended by Embassies outside of Japan.
Japanese Studies Student Program
At The Center for International Education and Research in Mie University, we provide Japa-nese language and culture education classes for all international students. There are five dif-ferent levels available ranging from beginner through advanced, according to the students' needs and abilities.
Japanese Language Course
We offer regular Japanese language courses such as Basic Beginners (I & II), Intermediate (I & II) and Ad-
vanced levels. In order to take any of these courses, international students must take a placement test. The
results of this test will place students in the appropriate level.
An Intensive Japanese Language Course is also available as a 6-month course divided into two levels: be-
ginners and intermediate.
Japan - Kingdom of Thailand
From April 2007 to October 2011, The CIER has sent 28 students to partner universities in Thailand (Chiang
Mai University, Kasetsart University, Khon Kaen University, Suranaree University of Technology, Thammasat
University and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang ), to acquire training at various companies
and public research institutes. At the same time we have accepted 10 students from Thai partner universities.
Japan - Republic of Korea
As part of expanding our academic exchange with one of our partner universities: Sejong University, we ac-
cepted 3 students for internship this year. The students underwent training at a laboratory of the Graduate
School of Engineering, and visited the SHARP Corporation Kameyama plant, MIKIMOTO Pearl Island, Mie
Prefecture Environmental Conservation Agency, and Kameyama Municipal Hall.
Taking in consideration our Internship Program between Thai partner universities and Mie University, the
CIER recently asked to be invited to cooperate in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) this year. By
cooperating with a wide variety of institutes and organizations, we improve our chances of offering various
kinds of training opportunities, and at the same time, enhance the attractiveness of our International Career
Development Program.

The Kumano Kodo is a series of ancient pilgrimage routes that crisscross the Kii peninsula. These sacred trails were and are still used for the pilgrimage to the sa-cred site "Kumano Sanzan" or the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano.
The most notable of the three, Hongu Taisha, is a World Heritage registered Grand Shrine. All of the Ku-mano Kodo pilgrimage routes lead to this mystical sand-bank encompassed by rugged mountains.
The Kumano area was, and still is considered a place of healing; a sacred, mystical abode of the gods. Walk-ing these ancient routes is a must for anyone wanting to experience the spiritual countryside of Japan.
The Kumano Kodo was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage on July 7, 2004 as the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range."

The Ise Grand Shrine is located in the center of Ise city, and was founded about 1500 years ago. It is argu-ably one of Shinto's holiest and most important sites.
The Shrine is composed of 123 Shinto shrines cen-tered on two main ones, Naiku (or inner shrine) where sun goddess Amaterasu (one of the principal Shinto deities) is worshiped; and Geku (or outer shrine) where Toyouke the God of agriculture and industry is worshiped.
Agricultural ceremonies and festivals are held at the Ise Grand Shrine throughout the year to celebrate spe-cial events such as New Year's Eve (when an imperial envoy carries an offering of rice harvested by the emper-or himself), the foundation of Japan, purification rituals for priests, and other festivities.

Kumano Kodo (Pilgrimage Routes)
Toba is located in the Ise Bay where many people go to resorts to relax and enjoy the coast life wonders.
Toba is the hometown of Kokichi Mikimoto, who de-veloped and improved the methods to cultivate pearls causing the Japanese Pearl market to quickly expand in the 1930's.
Currently Mikimoto Pearls are worldwide famous with stores in Tokyo, New York, London, and of course in Toba, at the Mikimoto Pearl Island, where you can visit the Pearl Museum, the Memorial Hall and the Pearl Plaza, where ex-hibitions are often held.
Toba is also the site of the Toba Aquarium, which houses animals such as du-gongs, African manatees, and a wide variety of aquatic life.

Suzuka (Suzuka Circuit)
Suzuka International Racing Course, (Suzuka Circuit), is a motorsport race track located in Suzuka City. It has a significant industrial market, having major factories for both Sharp and Honda within its bounds.
Suzuka Circuit has been the home of the Japanese Grand Prix since 1987. It is the only “figure of eight” cir-cuit used in the F1 championship program, meaning that the cars go both clockwise and anticlockwise.
Suzuka is one of the oldest remaining tracks of the For-mula One World Championship, and its role as one of the last “Grand Prix” of the season means numerous World Championships have been decided on this track.
The Japanese crowd is usually about 130,000 and there is currently a revival of interest for F1 racing in Ja-pan, following the introduc-tion of the Toyota team, Hon-da engines and Japanese drivers.
Tsu is the capital city of Mie Prefecture and home to Mie Uni-versity, the prefecture's only na-tional university. It is the second largest city in Mie Prefecture by population, only behind to Yok-kaichi, and the largest by area ahead of Matsusaka, its neighbor-ing city to the south, home of the famous “Matsusaka Beef.”
