Middle Eastern Presbyterians in the United States . . .
Presbyterian Middle Eastern Americans trace their faith origin to the apostolic age, and their
Reformed roots to Presbyterian missions in the Middle East in the 19th Century. Here in the
USA, Middle Eastern immigrants started to join the Presbyterian Church more than a century
ago.
In 1898, the Armenian Presbyterian Mission of West Hoboken was
organized to minister to Armenian refugees from the 1895 Turkish
massacres, and was officially recognized by the Jersey City
Presbytery. The Mission later became the Armenian Presbyterian
Church in New Jersey, and it is part of the Presbytery of the
Palisades.
In 1899, a small group of Lebanese/Syrian immigrants met regularly
for worship in an apartment in Fall River, Massachusetts. The group
eventually became affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, first as a
mission and, in 1934, as a church.
The first Assyrian Presbyterian Church in the United States was established in Chicago in 1910
as the Carter Memorial Persian Assyrian Presbyterian Church.
Today, there are more than 50 Presbyterian congregations and fellowships throughout the
United States, worshiping in different languages, including Arabic, Armenian, Assyrian, and
Farsi.
The office of Middle Eastern Ministries was created by the General Assembly Council in 1993
to provide spiritual and organizational services to enable the growth and enhance the ministry
of Middle Eastern Presbyterian congregations and fellowships; and to help PC(USA) reach out
to the more than six million Middle Easterners living in the United States.
Rooted in the Apostolic Faith...
Nurtured in the Reformed Tradition...
Witnessing to the Gospel of Jesus Christ...

Arabic Congregations
Nurtured in the Synod of the Nile, the Synod of Syria and Lebanon, the National Evangelical Church of Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East, Arabic‐speaking immigrants have formed several Presbyterian churches and fellowships throughout the United States. The first of these congregations was established in 1899, when a small group of Arab immigrants met regularly for worship in Fall River, Massachusetts. Today, Middle Eastern Presbyterian congregations are comprised of members from almost every country in the Middle East. As Arab Christians continue to flock to the United States, more Arabic churches are being planted to welcome new immigrants and care for their spiritual needs. Assyrian Congregations
Assyrian refugees from Persia and Mesopotamia (modern‐day Iraq, Iran, and Turkey) arrived in the United States fleeing massacres and conflicts before and during World War I. Most of them settled in Connecticut, Illinois, and California. The first Assyrian Presbyterian Church in the United States was established in Chicago in 1910 as the Carter Memorial Persian Assyrian Presbyterian Church. In California, St. John’s Assyrian Presbyterian Church was established in Turlock in 1926. As instablitity in the Middle East continue to spur the migration of Assyrians to the United States, other smaller fellowships have formed in Chicago, IL, and San Jose and Los Angeles, CA. Arab and Middle Eastern Heritage (ALAMEH) was first formed in 1993. Founding
members drew up a set of bylaws and an organizational plan. In 1995 ALAMEH
was endorsed by the ELCA Church wide Assembly as an official organization
within the denomination. Today, ALAMEH includes three Arabic‐Language
