to this edition of the prayer diary, which takes us from Michaelmas through Advent to
Christmas Eve.
As usual, it’s a sizable document but designed to be quick and clear to read, and also to leave space for your own notes. Of
course, you do not have to print it all out at once, and you’re welcome to reformat it, if you wish (a Word version is available from my blog, see website
below).
Sunday entries are designed to look at some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese – sometimes geographical (deaneries, archdeaconries, link dioceses) sometimes
issues or activities (Vocations Sunday). If there is an aspect of diocesan life that you’d like included on a Sunday, do let me know. These are followed
through the week by daily prayers from all over the diocese, and across the Anglican Communion, including the calendar of saints and other worthy people.
Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests that
have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers.
Please contact me with any comments or suggestions – [email protected] or 01634 814439. I will also be pleased to
provide large print copies to any who would find that helpful.
The calendar is published on the Diocesan website, and also on www.rochesterworship.wordpress.com where you can find the next quarter’s
intercessions (hopefully) as this quarter starts to come to an end.
Welcome

Prisons Week
In the gospel, Jesus teaches clearly that when we visit those in prison it is as if we visit him – and that is underlined much more widely in Scripture (see, for example, https://www.prisonfellowship.org/resources/training-resources/in-prison/ministry-basics/what-the-bible-says-about-prison-ministry/). And indeed down the centuries, Christians have often been foremost in the care of those in
prison and in addressing issues around criminal justice.
Prisons Week (www. http://prisonsweek.org/2016-prayer-campaign) is an
invitation for the churches to join in prayer for all who are affected by or engaged with our criminal justice system. At present prisons and the criminal
justice system more widely are much in focus within our national political life –
our prayer is a vital contribution.
This October we are also launching Prison Hope 2017, an ecumenical initiative
to encourage greater engagement between churches and local prisons – this will run all through 2017. Please pray for the planning and effectiveness of this.
And give thanks for all that already happens in our prisons in the name of
Christ.

Paddock Wood Deanery
The Deanery has recently welcomed two incumbents into benefices; Paul Kish
at Yalding with Laddingford and Collier St and Andrew Axon in Lamberhurst and Matfield. Pray for them and their parishes as they learn to work together,
and as they discern God’s vision for this new chapter of the churches’ life.
Bishop James also spent a week in the deanery (3-9 Oct) whilst conducting one of his visitations. Give thanks for the events that took place, and pray for
ongoing fruitfulness of the Bishop’s retreat with his clergy that week. Pray for the challenges of rural ministry and of parishes needing to develop closer
working relationships with each other, whilst keeping their local identity. Finally, in Paddock Wood, St Andrew’s has partnered with Bennett Memorial
Diocesan School’s Tenax Trust, to sponsor a free primary school in the town.
Pray for the work that now needs to take place to realise this for a September 2019 opening.

Rochester Deanery
We are on the cusp of exciting times in the Rochester Deanery. There has
been a period of discernment and exploration of the changing face of Chatham Town Centre and how best we can provide for mission there.
We give thanks for the hard work of those who prepared the bid to the Church
Commissioners and for the resulting funding to support the mission in Chatham. The first of these mission-related activities will begin soon. One such
activity that is planned is a Language Café. Please hold this initiative in your payers.
Pray too for the existing congregations in the Chatham churches (one of which is in vacancy), so that they are able to embrace the opportunities with
enthusiasm.
The work ahead will involve building relationships with other agencies and denominations. We pray that in the changing landscape of ecumenical ministry,
churches are brought together in common action for good.

Rochester Cathedral
Rochester Cathedral has been going through a period of transition and change:
a long and challenging period of building work, particularly the development of the Crypt and Library, is coming to an end, personnel changes have led to the
appointment of a new Dean and two new Commissioners Canons are also to be
appointed. Through it all the focus has remained on the core activity and purpose – the daily worship of Almighty God summed up in the Cathedral’s
mission statement ‘Nurturing the radical hope of human flourishing in Jesus Christ’.
Please give thanks for the physical, financial and spiritual resources that have enabled this to be accomplished, for the ongoing good will and patience of
staff, visitors and all for whom the Cathedral means so much.
Please pray for wisdom and vision as the Cathedral community seeks to embrace the new opportunities the building development will bring in helping
them to honour the Benedictine traditions of prayer, work and hospitality they have inherited. Pray for members of the Chapter as they engage with this new
situation that the Cathedral may be a spiritual resource not just to the people
of the Medway towns but to the whole Diocese.

Kondoa
Thank you for the privilege of our link with Kondoa Diocese and for the sure
knowledge that it is being blessed by you as, together, we work to build your Church. You know us all and you know what we could be. We pray for hearts
that are wise, perceptive and generous.
We are so grateful to be able to share the celebration of Kondoa Diocese’s 15th anniversary and particularly that there will be representatives from Rochester
at the special service on 6 November. May all the celebration events be full of joy, worship and encouragements for all.
Please pour your Holy Spirit into the Kondoa Diocese as our brothers and sisters work so hard to build your church where there is great poverty and
where the majority faith is Islam. We pray for all in the Diocese, regardless of
their faith, for protection, spiritual and physical, and long lasting solutions to hunger, frailty of health and much more.
Father, we ask you to continue to bless our friendship and to protect Bishop Given, his family and all who work for the Kondoa Diocese. We also ask that
you will, through this long term friendship, deepen our faith and Christian
witness for you in both our Dioceses.

Give thanks that after a break of a couple of years, the Deanery Synod is now
meeting again. Pray for the Synod as it revisits the Deanery Mission and Ministry Plan over the next few months. Please pray for a real sense of
fellowship, community and purpose, especially as the parishes are drawn from
such a wide geographical area. It is important for us to find ways of working, worshipping and witnessing together so that we can work out a sense of
purpose for us as a Deanery. Please also pray for the three benefices which are currently in interregnum – St Mary Platt; Church of the Good Shepherd,
Borough Green; and Shipbourne with Plaxtol. Pray for all those who are looking after the parishes during the vacancies, and for those who are involved in the

Tonbridge Archdeaconry
The Tonbridge Archdeaconry is undergoing a period of some change, in terms
of ordained clergy. We have had a large number of vacancies. Please pray for those who are arriving new in parish posts this autumn, including Laurence
Powell (KCM, Tunbridge Wells), Rachel Wilson (St Thomas, Southborough),
Richard Thomas (St Philip, Tunbridge Wells), Andrew Axon (Lamberhurst with Matfield), Paul Kish (Yalding with Collier Street) and Nicholas Williams (East
Malling, Wateringbury and Teston). Do also remember Jonathan Hall, who began at Aylesford in August. We also welcome Claire Allwood as an SSM
curate at KCM, Tunbridge Wells, following her ordination on 1 October. Please continue to pray for other parishes still in vacancy, or about to be in vacancy.
We rejoice in the much good and faithful work which happens across all the
parishes of our Archdeaconry and in other settings, eg, chaplaincies. Please pray for all our schools as they return to their new terms and for those going
off to colleges and universities. We rejoice in the good news of a new Free School to be opened in Paddock Wood, as part of the Tenax Trust (based at
the Bennett Memorial Diocesan School). We rejoice, too, at the many special
opportunities for ministry and mission brought about by the special occasions of the autumn and early winter season ahead of us.

‘Our Conversation; Our Future’
We are embarking on a large conversation exercise, called ‘Our Conversation;
Our Future’ across the Diocese, to help us form a new strategy.
The creation of a diocesan strategy is a response to the many remarkable
cultural, economic and spiritual changes that society is undergoing and especially to the need to develop a coherent and shared mission, through
evangelism and social action, which demonstrates the coming Kingdom of God in the midst of such uncertainty and flux.
This is an era when many Christian people feel more isolated and less sure of
how to express their faith in a hard and unyielding culture, but this is not a
task each is called to alone. The Church exists to give shape, meaning and voice to Christian identity; the Diocese of Rochester helps to give regional
expression to this for Anglicans.
Please pray for Bishop James as he leads this work, and the project board
members who are aiding him alongside other parish and diocesan commitments.
