A topical bible study on PRAYER, aided with Easton's Bible Dictionary.
Previously, I had done topical bible study on Healing, Spiritual Gifts, and Fruit of the Spirit. Prayer for
healing is one of the most popular prayer request. When people are in need, for example, when sick
or the danger of death, they will remember God, and pray to God. I am just as human as anybody.
When I am sick, or my family member is sick, that's the time I remember to pray. For the last one
week, my health has not been that good. Two days ago, I had a chest pain whereby I had taken 2x 2
tablets of GTN under my tongue. Thanks to God that the chest pain went away.

Prayer [N] [T] [B] [S]
is converse with God; the intercourse of the soul with God, not in contemplation or meditation, but
in direct address to him. Prayer may be oral or mental, occasional or constant, ejaculatory or
formal. It is a "beseeching the Lord" ( Exodus 32:11 ); "pouring out the soul before the Lord"
( 1 Samuel 1:15 ); "praying and crying to heaven" ( 2 Chronicles 32:20 ); "seeking unto God and

12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the LORD, that
Eli watched her mouth. 13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only
her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli
thought she was drunk. 14 So Eli said to her, “How long will you be
drunk? Put your wine away from you!”15 But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of

(Ephesians 3:14) (NKJV)
Prayer presupposes a belief in the personality of God, his ability and willingness to hold intercourse
with us, his personal control of all things and of all his creatures and all their actions.
Acceptable prayer must be sincere ( Hebrews 10:22 ), offered with reverence and godly fear, with a
humble sense of our own insignificance as creatures and of our own unworthiness as sinners, with
earnest importunity, and with unhesitating submission to the divine will. Prayer must also be offered
in the faith that God is, and is the hearer and answerer of prayer, and that he will fulfil his
word, "Ask, and ye shall receive" ( Matthew 7:7 Matthew 7:8 ; 21:22 ; Mark 11:24 ; John 14:13 John
14:14 ), and in the name of Christ ( John 16:23 John 16:24 ; 15:16 ; Ephesians
2:18 ; 5:20 ; Colossians 3:17 ;1 Peter 2:5 ).
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith,
having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our
bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:22) (NKJV)22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with
our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies
washed with pure water. (Hebrews 10:22) (RSV)
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock,
and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives,
and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be
opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks
for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he

I have put my trust in the Lord GOD,

Prayer is of different kinds, secret ( Matthew 6:6 ); social, as family prayers, and in social worship;
and public, in the service of the sanctuary.
6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have
shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the
secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you
openly.[b] 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the
heathendo. For they think that they will be heard for their many
words. (Matthew 6:6-7) (NKJV)
Intercessory prayer is enjoined ( Numbers 6:23 ; Job 42:8 ; Isaiah 62:6 ; Psalms 122:6 ; 1 Timothy
2:1; James 5:14 ), and there are many instances on record of answers having been given to such
prayers, e.g., of Abraham ( Genesis 17:18 Genesis 17:20 ; 18:23-32 ; Genesis 20:7 Genesis
20:17Genesis 20:18 ), of Moses for Pharaoh ( Exodus 8:12 Exodus 8:13 Exodus 8:30 Exodus

17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his
heart, “Shall a childbe born to a man who is one hundred years
old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18 And
Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”
19 Then God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and
you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him
for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after
him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have
blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him
exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a
great nation. (Genesis 17:17-20) (NKJV)
Abraham interceded with God for Ishmael. Here, we can the prayer in
the form of conversation with God.
22 Then the men turned away from there and went toward
Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. 23 And Abraham
came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with
the wicked? 24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city;
would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty
righteous that were in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing
nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain;
and it did not rain on the land for three years and six
months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and
the earth produced its fruit. (James 5:13-18) (NKJV)
In the above verses, we see about intercessory prayers, i.e. praying
for other people, praying for the nation, praying for the sick.

as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the
righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not
the Judge of all the earth do right?”26 So the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the
city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am
but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the
Lord: 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous;
would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?”
So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.”29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should
be forty found there?”
So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”30 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak:
Suppose thirty should be found there?”
So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”31 And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak
to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?”
So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.”32 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but
once more: Suppose ten should be found there?”
And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” (Genesis
18:22-32) (NKJV)
Abraham interceded with God for Sodom. In fact in his conversation
with God, Abraham was negotiating for Sodom not to be destroyed.
7 Now therefore, restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and
he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not
restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all
who are yours.” (Genesis 20:7) (NKJV)
17 So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, his
wife, and his female servants. Then they bore children; 18 for
the LORD had closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech
because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. (Genesis 20:17-18) (NKJV)
No rules are anywhere in Scripture laid down for the manner of prayer or the attitude to be assumed
by the suppliant. There is mention made of kneeling in prayer ( 1 Kings 8:54 ; 2 Chr 6:13 ; Psalms
95:6 ; Isaiah 45:23 ; Luke 22:41 ; Acts 7:60 ; 9:40 ; Ephesians 3:14 , etc.); of bowing and falling
prostrate ( Genesis 24:26 Genesis 24:52 ; Exodus 4:31 ; 12:27 ; Matthew 26:39 ; Mark 14:35 , etc.);
of spreading out the hands ( 1 Kings 8:22 1 Kings 8:38 1 Kings 8:54 ; Psalms
28:2 ; 63:4 ; 88:9 ;1 Timothy 2:8 , etc.); and of standing ( 1 Samuel 1:26 ; 1 Kings 8:14 1 Kings
8:55 ; 2 Chr 20:9 ; Mark 11:25 ; Luke 18:11 Luke 18:13 ).
54 And so it was, when Solomon had finished praying all this prayer
and supplication to the LORD, that he arose from before the altar
of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up
to heaven. (1 Kings 8:54) (NKJV)
12 Then Solomon[b] stood before the altar of the LORD in the
presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his
hands 13 (for Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits
long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the
midst of the court; and he stood on it, knelt down on his knees
before all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands
toward heaven); (2 Chronicles 6:12-13) (NKJV)
(Ephesians 3:14) (NKJV)
From the above verses, we could see that the act of prayer is done at
keneling position. Probably, this demonstrates praying earnestly with
great honour to God.
26 Then the man bowed down his head and worshiped the LORD.
(Genesis 24:26) (NKJV)
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;6
Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. (Psalm 95:6) (NKJV)
23 I have sworn by Myself;23
The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness,
And shall not return,
That to Me every knee shall bow,
Every tongue shall take an oath. (Isaiah 45:23) (NKJV)
41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and
He knelt down and prayed, (Luke 22:41) (NKJV)
60 Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do
not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell
asleep. (Acts 7:60) (NKJV)
40 But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And
turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her
eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. (Acts 9:40) (NKJV)
14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ,[c]
52 And it came to pass, when Abraham’s servant heard their
words, that he worshiped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.
(Genesis 24:52) (NKJV)
31 So the people believed; and when they heard that the LORD had
visited the children of Israel and that He had looked on their
affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshiped. (Exodus
4:31) (NKJV)
27 that you shall say, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice of theLORD, who
passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He
struck the Egyptians and delivered our households.’” So the
people bowed their heads and worshiped. (Exodus 12:27)
(NKJV)
39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed,
saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me;
nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39)
(NKJV)
35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that
if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. (Mark 14:35)
(NKJV)
In the Old Testament, the act of worship and act of prayer has
affinity and similarity. Worship and prayer is associated with bowing
to the earth, bowing in prostrate position.
22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence
of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward
heaven; (1 Kings 8:22) (NKJV)
38 whatever prayer, whatever supplication is made by
anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows the
plague of his own heart, and spreads out his hands toward this
temple: (1 Kings 8:38) (NKJV)
54 And so it was, when Solomon had finished praying all this prayer
and supplication to the LORD, that he arose from before the altar
of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up
to heaven. (1 Kings 8:54) (NKJV)
2 Hear the voice of my supplications2
When I cry to You,
When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary. (Psalm
28:2) (NKJV)
4 Thus I will bless You while I live;4
I will lift up my hands in Your name. (Psalm 63:4) (NKJV)
My eye wastes away because of affliction.9
LORD, I have called daily upon You;
I have stretched out my hands to You. (Psalm 88:9)
(NKJV)
8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy
hands, without wrath and doubting; (1 Timothy 2:8) (NKJV)
From the above verses, we see the act of prayer is done with hands
lifted up toward God.

woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD. (1 Samuel
1:26) (NKJV)

voice, saying: (1 Kings 8:55) (NKJV)
9 ‘If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or
famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence
(for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our
affliction, and You will hear and save. (2 Chronicles 20:9) (NKJV)
25 “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against

You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust,
adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I
give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing
afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat
his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ (Luke 18:11-
13) (NKJV)
If we except the "Lord's Prayer" ( Matthew 6:9-13 ), which is, however, rather a model or pattern of
prayer than a set prayer to be offered up, we have no special form of prayer for general use given us
in Scripture.
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the
things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner,
therefore, pray:
This is a model prayer. It does not mean we should pray this model prayer all the time, but this is a
comprehensive prayer. Based on the model prayer, we should praise God and ask for forgiveness of
sins.
Prayer is frequently enjoined in Scripture ( Exodus 22:23 Exodus 22:27 ; 1 Kings
(Matthew 6:8-13) (NKJV)
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.10
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.11
And forgive us our debts,12
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,13
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever. Amen.[c]

surely hear their cry; (Exodus 22:23) (NKJV)

will he sleep in? And it will be that when he cries to Me, I will hear,
for I am gracious. (Exodus 22:27) (NKJV)
5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and
God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?” (1 Kings 3:5) (NKJV)
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves,
and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways,
then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal
their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14) (NKJV)

inquire of Me to do this for them: I will increase their men like a
flock. (Ezekiel 36:37) (NKJV)

And He heard me from His holy hill. Selah (Psalm 3:4) (NKJV)

You have relieved me in my distress;
Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. (Psalm 4:1) (NKJV)

For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping. (Psalm 6:8)
(NKJV)

He heard my voice from His temple,
And my cry came before Him, even to His ears. (Psalm 18:6)
(NKJV)

16 Confess your trespasses[e] to one another, and pray for one
another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of
a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature
like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did
not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he
prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced
its fruit. (James 5:16-18) (NKJV)
From the above verses, we could see the various forms of prayer, and
various motivations/reasons of prayer.
